Winter Shelling Adventures - Pass a Grille Beach, Winter 2019
Winter storms make for a whole different experience shelling in the Florida Gulf Coast when sandals are switched out for rain boots. Pass-A-Grille beach is a local favorite since it's quieter and off the beaten path from all the tourist beaches nearby. It's also where I find the best shells. This is a compilation of shelling videos taken from the Winter of 2019.

Step by step instructions using my "WEN 2305 Rotary Tool Kit with Flex Shaft" (cheaper than a Dremel) to drill double and single holes into shells and sea glass. Drill using diamond head drill bits submerged in water.

Red Tide as seen on Pass-a-Grille Beach, Florida. The Red Tide along Florida's Gulf Coast during the Fall of 2018 was the region's worst Harmful Algal Bloom in over a decade. Although the occurrence is seasonal, the severity of this episode is causing many to question the reasons behind such an intense bloom, and whether humans might be to blame.

The Shell Key Preserve (Tierra Verde, FL) is accessible by ferry, private boat or kayak, just across the channel from Pass-a-Grille beach. Documenting a couple of different trips from July and August, 2018.

Part 2 of my tutorial, focused on the safe disposal of muriatic acid solution by neutralizing it with baking soda in a bathtub. Appropriate only for small amounts of acid after dipping seashells to restore their color.

Transform your seashells with this do-at-home method that requires specific safety precautions. Muriatic acid eats away calcium carbonate and restores natural color in only a few seconds!

    Thanks for the good info. Ever use wampum? I lived in Long Island, NY and the beaches on the south shore would produce these beauties.

    Your video was the third I've come across that gave me what I need to know to get started. So much appreciate the step by step drill shots and text, explaining and showing the process. Excellent video! Thanks so much, and will be looking through your videos!

    Thank you for sharing this technique. Out of all the videos I viewed, yours is the shortest and has the most detailed to the pint demonstration, Thank you in advance for preventing me from breaking shells.

    Does this drill plug into electricity? Can you do that while using water?

    Thank you! All the other channels' videos I watched didn't use the water. Looks like the water and the diamond bits are the key to the whole thing! So excited now!!!

    Would have preferred to hear the waves and the 'bone rattle' rather than the music. Also, those were not drills as indicated. What you called moon shells, I have most often heard them called shark eye shells. But interesting video. Lots of shells to discover.

    Thanks for the tutorial! Since this was a year ago now it says...How long does the vibrant colors last after being dipped in acid? Do they still look vibrant now? Did they change much once they had dried?

    • @seaborncreations3583
      @seaborncreations3583 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome! I'm glad you liked it! They're a tiny bit less bright when they dry but overall shells stay that vibrant! You can always rub them with mineral oil to make them pop whenever you think they need it.

      Yes, do! It's such a nice beach, more secluded than the busy public beaches like Clearwater and St. Pete beach nearby.

    How many times have you been electrocuted? You dont mix electricity with water.

    • @seaborncreations3583
      @seaborncreations3583 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha! Never. Usually you're right but with this you're only letting the drill bit get wet, not any part of the motor or wiring.

    If you want a better word for a "lay flat" necklace the term I use which is easier and, I believe, correct is gorget. Not trying to be a jerk, just trying to make your life a tad bit easier

    • @seaborncreations3583
      @seaborncreations3583 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, never heard of that term! I had looked for a proper name for it, too. I think people understand "lay-flat" pretty easily, but that's good to know!
