CLT Diaphragm Spline Connections and Chord Detailing
The American Wood Council's Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS) §4.5.4 Item 1 requires that diaphragm shear forces be transferred between adjoining CLT panels and between CLT panels and boundary elements through dowel-type fasteners in shear. Dowel-type fasteners include nails, wood screws, lag screws, and bolts. Dowel-type fasteners in shear are installed perpendicular to the shear plane and not used in tension (withdrawal) or compression to resist diaphragm shear. In practice, nails and proprietary self-tapping screws are mostly commonly used in CLT diaphragm connections. SDPWS §4.5.4 Item 2 does not permit the use of shear connections to transfer the diaphragm tension forces, such as at chords and collectors.
For diaphragm shear connections, the capacities of the dowel-type fasteners (nails and screws) in shear, Z, are calculated using the yield mode equations of the National Design Specification® (NDS®) for Wood Construction §12.3.1. Mode IIIs or Mode IV of this section is required to control the capacity of the diaphragm shear connections. The nominal diaphragm shear capacity of the connection is based on an adjusted design capacity, Z*, defined in SDPWS §4.5.4 Item 1. Z* is similar to the adjusted design capacity, Z′, in NDS Table 11.3.1 except the ASD and LRFD-specific adjustment factors, CD, KF, ϕ, and λ, are not applied.
Z* = Z x CM Ct Cg CΔ Ceg Cdi Ctn
The nominal shear capacity per fastener is:
Vn = 4.5 Z*
The chords, collectors and their connections, (y) and (z), and other structural components transferring shear, such as the CLT panels themselves, have different design requirements. The connections of chords and collectors are not required to use dowel-type fasteners in shear controlled by yield modes IIIs or IV. However, chords, collectors, and their connections must be designed to higher required capacity with a force increase factor applied to the diaphragm design force. The required force increase factors are found in SDPWS §4.5.4 Item 3, including Exceptions 1 and 2.
The capacities of these diaphragm components are calculated using the provisions of the applicable material design method. The design capacities of wood chords, collectors, and their connections are calculated using the NDS, and not using the SDPWS nominal capacity (4.5 Z*) and reduction factors.

    Hey this seems to be true for smaller mass timber residential buildings (especially post n plate systems) but when we start looking at taller structures which require encapsulation or are supported by post and beam gravity systems doesn't this floor to ceiling height requirement start increasing? Also, with residential there is often a push to hide wiring and hvac.What are good solutons to reduce floor to ceiling heights when you start getting above 6 ST. I saw Ascent floor to ceiling heights were like 11+/- ft.

    Probably a dumb questions; wouldn't adding concrete to a wood slab compromise the wood as it introduces moisture from the concrete into the wood? Like I said, probably a dumb questions, but I would think moisture would be the enemy of any mass timber structural unit.

    Glass walled conference room, 1-hr wall. Use window sprinklers that are listed for this application. NB: There are a number of details that are required of both the glass and spk designer. In no case are intermediate horizontal mullions allowed. This appears to be biggest project risk. Someone tries to ‘be reasonable’ and save money. If you don’t know what you’re talking about, you aren’t being reasonable. You’re guessing. Project management will need to ride hard on this issue. You already have a wet spk system installed. Use it. Cheaper than rated glass.

    Would NLT be a possible replacement in residential construction for a monolithic slab on grade? If the entire slab is inside the building envelope insulated underneath with the vapor barrier between the insulation and the NLT slab. Would there still be far too much expansion in the slab to make this suitable?

    Little bit late to the party but what about combining the two concepts? Would it be possible to integrate a one-way spanning CLT panel between the glulam beams? Cant seem to find any references but dont know why, it seems to combine both the benefits of having a small construction height together with a large span. I can imagine using notched CLT for partially integrated floors or using a lot of screws or steel plates to suspend the CLT slab between the glulam beams.

    What fire protection is used?.. how are the termites prevented?. What about when it rains

    • @MassTimberHowTos
      @MassTimberHowTos ปีที่แล้ว

      Fire protection is via charring of the exposed glulam and CLT framing member, validated through testing: timberlab.com/projects/3hr#:~:text=RESULTS,alternative%20to%20concrete%20and%20steel. The concern for termites is significantly lessened based on location, as well as the fact that the lowest 6 floors of this building are concrete (primarily parking). During construction, the timber elements are exposed to weather. A thorough plan for moisture protection and mitigation is required to ensure that moisture staining and damage doesn't occur. See this document for best practices: www.rdh.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Mass-Timber-Moisture-Management-Guide.pdf

    • @billsmith5109
      @billsmith5109 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@MassTimberHowTosI think I’d correct that the charring considerations are looking at structural collapse or not. Fire protection for Heavy Timber, at least in the U.S., is fairly conventional and follows current code minimums. In North American new multi-family or commercial construction fire sprinklers are just like providing hot and cold running water. It’s assumed, the norm, so these folks fail to mention. Of course most fires are put out when tiny by occupants or controlled by one or two sprinkler heads, with final by FF’s. Are you interested in high rise or shorter buildings?

    Hi there, can I ask, are the sources of water leakage in mass timber buildings different than other type of buildings, what make it different?

    • @MassTimberHowTos
      @MassTimberHowTos ปีที่แล้ว

      In terms of water leakage through the exterior envelope, the challenges are really the same as other materials. In a mass timber building, often the exterior walls are not framed with mass timber. The roofs usually are. Some of the key points are to protect the timber from moisture as much as possible during transport and install, don't cover the timber with other materials until the timber has adequately dried, and then use well detailed and installed envelope systems. This document does a good job of explaining some of the common envelope details in a mass timber building: www.rdh.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/RDH-Mass-Timber-Design-Guide-V2.pdf

    Thank you for your Well-done & insightful videos. I will take issue with the opening statement which highlights 'doing more with less'. This kind of construction is wonderful, but when we start thinking of it (or anything else) as a way to 'do things on the cheap' (especially the less-skilled & sincere designers/builders), we start a slippery slope from Architecture & Structure into buildings that end up becoming exercises in slapping on veneers & appliques OK, I relinquish the Soap-Box.

    Thanks for the video. Couple of questions, 1) what are/where can I find the deflection limits in a fire condition? 2) can you explain why there is different charring rate in CLT for different lamination thicknesses? My understanding is that this is captured delamination of CLT panels but has since been resolved in PRG 320 2019 (and the types of adhesive permitted). Is the fact that NDS 2018 didn't have this resolved ... but may be captured in the next NDS revision?

    • @MassTimberHowTos
      @MassTimberHowTos ปีที่แล้ว

      We haven't yet seen a guide on deflection limits in a fire conditions, I believe that would be an engineering judgement item. The variability of char rate with lamination thickness is based on the current NDS Chapter 16. You are correct that the PRG 320 now has new elevated temperature adhesive performance requirements. The char calculations in NDS remain unchanged for the time being
