I want you to be as successful as possible. Many military & civilian leaders find themselves in an unfamiliar environment mid-career. For me, it was being assigned to the Pentagon where I wrestled the Bureaucracy for 15 years. There is a whole sequence of hurdles to cross:
Adapting to the New Pentagon Assignment
Understanding Pentagon People
Developing the Interpersonal Skills to Build Relationships
Learning How Bureaucracy Works
Writing for a Government Audience
Competing in Conference Room Meetings
Getting Promoted
Military Retirement and Transition
The more effectively you can perform these steps, the more pleasant your experience will be and the more success you will enjoy.

Military Equipment always operates in a "grey market". Subject to tight property accountability rules, but also fluidly moving to meet mission requirements. To properly balance these two extremes, it helps to have an appreciation for both ends of the spectrum and some rules for when to compromise one way or the other.

My draft lottery number was 17 and joined the military in 1971. I was accepted into the Reserve program and served my 5 months active duty and then spent another 30 years in the Reserves both in Active Reserves and then Inactive Ready Reserves. I also got an Honorable Discharge.... Why can'r I get a DD 214?
This is news to me.
fine another little trick
I'm sure I'm not the only one here who could write a 200 page book of what I saw or had friends involved in over my 33 years. You hit the main point - no cash. Lateral transfer of government assets for no personal gain, no problem. The young ones have the stories over the past couple excursions. My one friend who was one of 3 PBOs who stood down the 4th ID in Nam in 1970 - the stories were phenomenal. One of my brothers in law served in the 101st in the late 50s. They lost a radio on a jump. Next day he was duty driver for the 1SG - who sends him to the mess hall to get a case of coffee. Then says come on, we're traveling. Dan still shakes his head - 90 minutes later they have a replacement radio complete with correct serial number. If we had any Civil War vets on this board I'll bet they could match the stories. I'll bet the Roman Legions had the same operators.....
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the extra SS earnings your received if you were in uniform prior to 2002.
I have no idea which versions I used but I got offered every gov job I applied for so it worked out.
sure we are totally never going to do any major ops
I needed this! Thanks Colonel! 😊
Applied for a lost DD214 last year and instead got several copies of my record of service. Apparently, they couldn't find my DD214 (honorably discharged 1976)
Explains why I have had an easier job of being cleared for work than others
Military supply stories are some of the craziest. Some have passed into legend. The mistyped NSN that got a unit a vintage Indian Motorcycle or Battleship anchor. The unit that kept getting vital repair parts stolen en route to them they took to sending a lieutenant to fetch and deliver them. Or the Kuwait ammo distribution center that was just a giant open lot with unit allotments dumped in the dirt and marked off with engineer tape. Which were liberally pilfered from by “more deserving units” - i.e., whatever combat unit showed up first.
Loud and clear sir thanks🫡
We were told 40 years ago to never allow the member 4 copy to copied as it contained information that could be used to steal your identity and or benefits. I have never used anything but the member 1 copy to prove veterans status and have never been asked for the member 4 copy or a facsimile. I worked for a municipality (City government for those of you in Rio Linda) after I go out of the Navy and there was never any question about which copy I supplied or was required to supply.
I have three different DD-214's and three different DD-215's. (Army and Marines) I'm working on getting a copy of member-4 on my last DD-214
I got out in 77 and I've never been asked for a long form, I also held a Q clearance(top secret) after I got out and my 214 was just fine for the FBI.
They say that there is only one thief in the Army. Everyone else is just trying to get their shit back.
Anachronism (of a hierarchical social class structure) Captain and above Lt's for admin and specialist (skills and training roles). (...and probably better for it)
A DD214 is as useless as a "college degree". In 1974 they didn't have all that nonsense. . Despite 6 yrs "honorable" service and mustering out from a SF unit, I have never used my DD214 for anything. My take has always been "my private life is none of your fucking business!". I don't even give my "home address". Ever. Not to the government, not to an employer, not to a bank. NO ONE needs to know where I and my family sleep at night in order to do business with me. Any employer worth working for is going to be a man capable of judging character and capability in a face-to-face conversation and is going to hire me regardless of what the job application contains. But, I get that most people are not like me. The world is full of worker drones.
You know, I didn't find my college degree useless at all. Best thing I ever did.
My DD 214 version is dated 01 Jul 66 and it has almost no comparison to the versions being discussed here.
This is the best Sergeants Time Training class ever.
I have both copies of my DD-214 as I was honorably discharged from the Air Force. I also registered my 214's with the Pima County Courthouse to preserve the record!!
Agree with the commenter below that "...just in time logistics" don't work well when you're out of ammo. BTW, my mom was a soldier in WWII and I always thought she had been a 71L type...asked her one day what she did in the Army and she told me she was a supply sergeant and I finally realized that scrounging was actually a genetically inherited trait, especially for her son the grunt! ;-)
Tactically acquired.
Mustang.
I got out in 75 as an E-5 avionics tech after 4 years. Never used my veterans preference for jobs and most jobs I never even brought it up unless there was some box that need to be checked on the employment application. The training I got in the military helped me have a good career. My discharge shows member copy 2. It was one I got had sent to me because I couldn’t find my original.
When i was in Iraq, my unit had access to the class 1 yard. We ended up with an excess of meat products. When I had to take my vehicles to general support and direct support maintenance for maintenance or upgrades, I would bring frozen meat to get bumped to the head of the line. Maintenance was happy to get to bbq something. I was happy to get my vehicles back ahead of schedule. The CO was happy to have more vehicles fully mission capable. Winning for everyone.
You're telling Holy secrets! If you haven't given your maintenance warrant a Christmas gift for favor you're doing it wrong.
@erikjanthes I'm really not telling holy secrets. It's just common sense to me. During this particular deployment, it was myself and my "Motor Sgt". I had to teach him how to do parts trading and scrounging with other units for parts. We were in an Army reserve unit at the time. Funny thing was he was originally active Army at one time and I was active Marine Corps at one time. At Motor T school in the Marine Corps they told us about trading and scrounging for parts. As far as I know, that wasn't discussed at the equivalent Army school. At least that's what my "Motor Sgt" told me.
Got my DD214 in 1970. It is not marked as any type of member. It has worked just fine.
I have had the best luck with OCS if you want field competency, West Point for pomp & circumstance. No luck at all with ROTC.
Did 29 years, only ever got a #1. 😒
Are military Reservists entitled to VA benefits?
Call the VA... they have people that get paid to answer this type of question
@ yea ok….just thought there was some reservists or decent responders out there who might just say yay or nay then I would follow up….but guess not?
Ask around for a VSO(Veteran Service Officer) how to submit a VA disability claim. Will depend on your service treatment records. Reserve and National Guard have more difficult time with the VA. I was a VSO for 17 years. Cases are all unique. Thanks for your service.
@@williamzee7748 Nope... walk the walk yourself instead of letting someone else walk it for you because you cant be bothered to...
@ if you can’t get other fellow reservist servicemen opinions as to their difficulties or not, like for example asking a neighbor or on TH-cam how to fix a tractor or something in same genre, then what have you in comradeship?…….especially when you live in rural county and have to travel miles to get the VA info center….you’re probably a city slicker liberal….because you use it to insult… a lot of good people use TH-cam to get info from like sources…dumbass.
You should mention SPD codes.
My dd214 shows my birth years 30 years wrong sent it to records to fix with my birth certificate they replied 6 months later saying everything was correct i servered and i never go to the VA never will resubmit a claim in other words they can go fvck themselves
Finally saw this video Chuck! Glad I was able to let you know about this. It is literally worth thousands of extra FERS pension dollars annually. One bit of advice for folks is don’t sit on this because the longer you wait to pay your portion of the FERS credit, the more the interest dollars on your service buy-back rack up, the more you’ll be also required to pay. I paid all of my credit buy-back within five years of becoming a federal employee and the total for me was around 8K. But for that 8K I went from a pension percentage of 34% to 50% which is substantial. Best part: when I hit 60 I still get my full military reserve retirement.
IN RECEIVING MY ARMY RESERVES RECORDS COPY FROM ST LOUIS MO , I WAS INTERESTED AS TO WHY MY RECORDS HAD NO MENTION OF THE CONTROVERSIAL INCIDENTS DURING MY TIME IN! I WAS THREATENED WITH THREE COURT MARTIALS , BUT NOTHING HAPPENED AFTERWARDS! I DID APPARENTLY PASS BASIC, BUT WAS DENIED THE PARADE AND GRADUATION CEREMONY, AND RECEIVED NO DIPLOMA FOR BASIC GRADUATING! THE DRILL SGT WAS EXTREMELY PISSED I WAS NOT RECYCLED ! ANOTHER FELLOW UNIT RESERVIST AND MYSELF NEVER RECEIVED OUR TRUCK CRANE OPERATOR TRAINING AT FORT LOUSY WOODS MO, AND INSTEAD, SENT TO FORT SHERIDAN ILLINOIS, WHERE WE ONLY MOWED THE OFFICERS GOLF COURSE! HOWEVER MY DD214 STATES I AM AN FULLY QUALIFIED CRANE OPERATOR. THERE WAS AN NOTATION IN MY RECORDS THAT I GAVE SATISFACTORY SERVICE! PERHAPS IT WAS EASIER TO GIVE ME AN GOOD RATING, RATHER THAN EXPLAIN MY BAD RECORDS!!
Every job I ever applied for just took my word for it. As long as I could do the stuff I said I said I did on the resume. Who was the comedian that recommended you have a copy of your resume with you at job interviews? So that way you don't forget all the wonderful things you can do.
When I tried to get my Vet status on my drivers license I took my short form DD214 to the DMV. Only to be told they needed the long form. When I went back I asked why and was told it had my complete history on it and to get my status they required it all.
Losses are going to happen, but theft isnt acceptable. The Army Values may not say anything about equipment, but the general orders do.
Did you ever pay for a FLIPL? I didn't.
I am USAF discharged in 1977. Became a mechanical engineer, Ive worked for several defense contractors, some requiring security clearance. Ive never been asked to see my DD214. Private sector jobs... never ask, most dont even know what a DD214 is. I dont think this is a real issue. I have heard, since the 60's and 70's many veterans with less than Honorable Discharges, have had their discharges upgraded to Honorable. Look into it,
Just in time inventory doesn't work out well for the civilian market. Remember COVID? Or your own household, toilet paper, and remember COVID?
If this that is poorly written, it needs to be rewritten work together
As a Former Admin Sgt. released in 1974 with what you call the Long Form, every prospective employer I interviewed with wanted to see the Form FIRST before going over my Resume.. The very first area they looked at was the Re Code, or Reenlistment Code.. That Code was of the most interest and most important to them over the Resume. Mine was A1. Later in life as I worked up to being a Manager I was sent to many continuing education courses and each and every one of them that covered HIRING Practices ZEROED in on that reenlistment code even those with the Manager coming from a liberal anti-war, anti-military, company or group which surprised me for I figured they would want someone with those views.. I was surprised to find out it was just the opposite as they told me those people would create problems for them as well many creating a Hostile Work Environment.... When in discussion groups with other Managers, most with no Military Experience, it was common after seeing that Code, that made the decision for them as to whether to have a short interview or a long interview with seriously considering the idea of hiring any one with a RE A1. Though there are DD 214's out that do not actually relate to the individuals actual job performance being what was listed say the A1 when later they found out the guy was a problem and probably was given that code just to get RID of them via a lets say, a Officer who was not very forthright and afraid of confrontations....This was especially noted about Army DD 214's being issued in the 70's. Secondly was what Rank the Individual attained. They questioned someone who was in for 4 years and only was an E-2 or E-3. That was a warning signal. Now there are Jobs or MOS's where raising in Rank can be rather difficult because nobody moves up or down or out. The Air Force had a big problem with that in that the individuals wore stripes that would place him at E-6 but he was only paid as and E-4 and so this required the Interviewer to extract that information from him or her... Whomever in DOD who decided to issue DD-214's without the Reenlistment code sure did a big disservice to many companies and which I believe kept other Veterans from being hired not wanting to take the Risk of getting stuck with a loser the Military got rid of..... I worked for an Organization with a lot of Turn Overs and interviewed every Thursday for some 15 years and often looked at these new DD 214's with lets say a very cautious eye....
Mine is Medically Detached, subject to recall. Basically, In case of declared war, Break Glass.
I received a medical in 85 as a Tank Commander/ Platoon Sergeant. In 91 they broke the glass and sent me back to Fort Knox to retrain on the M1A1. 45 days later I was sitting in the sand box and ended up at 73 Easting. What a blast that was. I had thought they were going to assign me to an infantry unit because I had a secondary Mos of a 11B40.
In 2005/06 I met a veteran through a group of friends who needed to make some money. He came back with a crate full of stuff from Afghanistan, we thought it would be things like maybe some bags, or knifes and such but it was so much better than we imagined. I purchased a M150 ACOG and a Toughbook but the amount of them he had was pretty insane, all packed in various boxes and a few foot lockers with tons of stuff. Still have the optic somewhere in a box, got the Toughbook cheap for reformatting the rest of the ones he had.
Hope the statute of limitations is up lol
I think your comment about the instructors doing a 3 year assignment back at West Point was true in the past but not today. In the past they were "newly minted Masters". Today, they are newly minted PhD's probably due to criticism of non-PhD's teaching at an academy. I think the reason why military academies have former grads back to teach is to serve as an example to the cadets of what it's like to be a lifer. These instructors are usually captains about to become majors who have fulfilled their 5 year obligations and chosen to be lifers.
heater on tank went out during winter war games, mechanics had no spare or parts to fix. had to use candles in our M1A1 to have any warmth inside, one member of crew has cold weather tabs on jacket, I swore from then on. we would have a spare heater or enough parts to make one, some wheeling and dealing after we got back. also ended up with one of those super long cvc cables so tank commander could talk to gunner when doing bore sighting instead of hand signs. all it costed was some odds and ends from connex and doing some extra guard shifts for m8t.
Why is this video so quiet compared to other random vids?
So, what do I do about losing +8 billion dollars worth of equipment? You think I can just FLIPL it?
All I know is everyone needs member 4. So I don't see a reason of member 1. Asinine. But now I know the difference. Thank you
I came in to a company (as 1SG) that had had a freshly minted SPC running Supply. Awhile later a SSG appeared on my doorstep. His first question for me is "What do we need?". Whelp, we needed paint for a room in one of our buildings says I. At 1600 there was a 5 gallon bucket of paint sitting in my office. I knew I had been blessed with a good Supply Sergeant. It cost a box of Series 200 locks, but I got the paint. OTOH, I found that the system actually works if you know HOW to use the system to get things. Sometimes, you need to get that Supply Sergeant to dig deeper than the basic tasks to find what you need to do to get "X". Oh, they'll point to the MTOE/MTDA stuff and say "X" isn't authorized.....but maybe it CAN be authorized. It helps if you personally know how the system works and can guide the person to the right forms and regs. Same for maintenance management - and they overlap. But oooooo! I have an idea to stir the pot with! Why not a video on CIF? Those places (nests of Satan's spawn to most folks) actually run differently than folks think.
My grandson branched Quartermaster Corps year before last. He’s now learning to deal with this in Germany. I’m gonna forward this to him.
