Nice 80s minimal synth sound 👏
Thanks! The FM2 does sound quite good
if the model:samples had audio-in+built in mic it would be TOO good
Honestly, I forgot that the Blackbox is a sequencer because it can do so much. I got it just to launch clips like Ableton without having to use Ableton. Being able to load up 30 minute long drone tracks into a single pad is pretty cool. The only limit is the size of your SD card. So the live performance capabilities are definitely there as long as you approach the unit in a nontraditional way compared to other sequencers. Use it in tandem with a drum machine like the Digitakt and you've got the best of both worlds.
Agreed! I like my Blackbox side by side with an Elektron box.
@@minimal.camera I'm having a hard time finding something the Blackbox doesn't work well with!
Bonjour possible faire une vidéo comme Mapp le pad korg sur la blackbox. E keyboard sur blackbox. Merci beaucoup, thank you
Salut! Le keyboard map es automatique pour chromatic. Le pad Korg est couvert ici pour le live looping: th-cam.com/video/-bb3QL7nVAo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=B9mKKuLFf0coRZY6

can u do a beginner tutorial for a first timer who just bought a model:samples?
I've been meaning to for years, but there's some good ones already out there. Have you see this one? th-cam.com/video/bA8GJNWeoa0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TGPkQn3HyQTGD4dr
Thanks for the tutorial. helped me alot
Glad to hear that!
I love and dislike this unit. I had my original novation circuit stolen by someone with deep & dark struggles from my church. It was used solely as a drum machine & the volca was a replacement. I snapped up a used unit at a great price with no research. That's the dislike it's not a drum machine. My fault but the name could be better. The love is how deep and complex sound manipulation is😊. I've had hours fly by making a simple little pattern. Sometimes just sculpting a single sound, tiny adjustments with massive changes. Also a complete lay like me can make some nice little melodies, no tutorials, not even a glance at the instructions. Is it possible to export these effects in real time to other synths? Say the Polyend Tracker? You mentioned the duration of a pattern being a limitation. Could the tracker be used to increase it or add variation to a loop? Yes I also did the same with the Tracker, bought used because the price was so low. The seller told me it would make a great d.m but the work flow is strange, musical Excel.
Hey, sorry to hear about your stolen Circuit! The only way to export anything from the Volca Drum is to sample it. So something like the Polyend Tracker is a good pairing, since you could use the Volca Drum as a synth to create various sounds, and then sample them into the Tracker for sequencing. You can also send sequences out of the Tracker and into the Volca Drum, to bypass it's internal sequencer, useful for sampling drum loops. I do wish the Volca Drum had an audio input so you could apply the waveguide section to other sounds, but unfortunately it doesn't. I tried the Tracker Mini for a while and didn't really get along with the tracker interface in general, like you said it is too much like writing music in Excel. I prefer the Elektron approach, which has the power of the tracker but with an XOX style sequencer (similar to 808, 909, etc.).
❤
Thank you for sharing this.
This is a great video, but does anyone know if the android app is still available? I can't find it on the play store and the link doesn't work
Sorry, Caustic Editor is no longer supported, so you won't find it on the play store. You may be able to get an old .apk running, but that's at your own risk. I now recommend Vosyr (on Windows or MacOS) as the best way to manage samples on the Volca Sample V1.
Syntakt 2??? You definitely baited me with that one, but great video nonetheless.
lol, didn't even think about that...
Some very interesting sounds being born out of that setup, (although it appears to have been a difficult birth for most of them! 😅). Lovely stuff!
Thank you! It's a joy to exlore
Nice lighting ❤
Got that dollar store gooseneck LED ;)
nicely done!
Thank you!
So spookyyy what a mood 👻
❤🎉
On top of that... with midel: Cycles(in my setup) its great idea to use that complex Elektron sequencer. Thx for it!
Just bought one. This Volca sounds really unique. I like that in synths. Design!
Can they work on androids?
This video shows it working on Android, but unfortunately Caustic Editor is no longer supported, so you would have to look for an older android device to get it working.
I'm listening to this track on repeat, I'm learning the Syntakt myself. This is a banger, it is stuck in my head. Thanks for sharing this inspirational peice.
Aw thanks so much, glad to hear it inspired you!
How does the bb responded to the Dn in song mode? I use dn as my brain and would like vocal samples and such coming from the bb but wonder if it responds well to song mode
That's would be a great setup! You would want to use song mode on the Digitone, and just ignore the seq/song mode on the Blackbox. Just let the Blackbox be a 'sample player' in this setup, and use the Digitone MIDI tracks to trigger the samples. This way you are only dealing with one sequencer, and the timing will be tight. You'll also be able to use all the Elektron sequencer tricks if you want to. If the vocal samples are long, you can also use the Blackbox Slicer mode with them, and then sequence individual slices, as they are automatically mapped out across the standard midi notes (starting at C2 I think). Good way to get that stutter effect on the vocals if you like that. I'm sure it is possible to use song mode on both the elektron and blackbox simultaneously, but that seems like a lot of unnecessary complexity to me, especially when you've got spare MIDI tracks on the Digitone ready to use.
😮 👏
neat n smooth !
Melodic with the Kick? That IS ambitious!
This video is great! But I don't understand how you're getting those sounds. I need a good drum kit but it doesn't appear to have one. Do I need to load a drum kit in or where can I download one?
You can swap out the sounds. There's a lot of great free sample packs over at www.reddit.com/r/VolcaSamples/ You can also load any WAV file you want, use Vosyr for the original Volca Sample or the official KORG app for the Volca Sample 2.
Thank you a lot!
OH LAWDY startin us off with that BEEFY monster bass 🧌🎶 Such cool transitions too ✨ Makin me want some volcas lol
As my guitar playing is improving I find myself wanting to work more with audio, at least in the beginning stages of an idea. Less midi and engineering and more basic demo cutting. The audio looping functionality in the blackbox is rare at this price point. The only competitor I can see is the SP 404. The main difference is the blackbox was built to thrive with looping and recording audio, while this functionality is an afterthought on the 404. I would never bother with any serious sequencing on the black box. That work should be done in the DAW or some MPC like machine
Agreed!
❤
I think BB should really focus on its powerful looping capabilities. I don’t like to deep dive.. in fact, taking my sessions from ableton and breaking them down into parts is also more exciting when playing live.
I have one of these and have hardly used it... I was thinking that maybe I should try to use as only a 6 track drum machine, it seems it might have similar capabilities as the erika lxr1
I think that's a great application for it, I've had some good sessions with just the M:S as a simple drum machine (playing 909 samples for example), and jamming along on another synth.
I find sequencer/song mode as difficult to understand as cracking the Enigma code. I just can't get my head around it.
I don't think that's uncommon, a lot of people feel that way. It is almost too powerful for its own good, I still wish for a more simplified version in which each pad has only one sequencer lane, and song mode just arranges those sequences.
Very helpful :-)
Can you please make more Blackbox videos I learn so much from you :)
Thank you! I would like to, let me know if you have any requests!
This is a really excellent commentary on the way Blackbox excels especially given a certain genre of music. Although I agree it's most flexible compared to other sequencers, it is more intuitive if you want to compose unstructured /experimental /ambient. I moved from more "grid-based" electronic music (ie. techno) to ambient/atmospheric and in so doing, shifted tools from Electribe/MPC /MC-909 to the Blackbox. Especially nice is your idea of "looping" (out of sync) long or short samples. Blackbox excels at this whereas other hardware (eg. Electribe) can't even do it. This video is worth watching end to end of you are wanting to understand the scope of Blackbox as a tool, versus other sequencers.
Thanks so much! and I definitely agree
Very cool set. grit on grit
Thank you!
Surely the big problem with the BB for looping audio (especially ambient as per the OP) is that it can't overdub. This means that you lose the tails. I have one and it's great for looping midi (e.g. playing its own internal multisamples), but I can't see how it would work with live audio.
It can't overdub within a single track, but you can layer up the tracks and overdub that way. So think of it as a single tape looper with 16 layers/tracks.
This is the workflow I've been looking for, digitally replicating a 4-track tape mixer, thanks for the idea!
Nice man Sounds great, easy to follow
Thanks for the video!!!! ❤

I enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing your story. Wow! What a fantastic gift! If that nikon camera could talk. I'll be receiving a gx85 soon and am looking at some vintage lens. Look forward to more videos :)

Thanks for this. I wasn't quite aware of how the sequencer part of that machine worked. I'll be exploring that further as it sounds like exactly what I'm needing. Appreciated.

Hi! : ) I wonder if you can help me confirm a thing ... There is something with my Volca ( or it's that way on all volca Sample 2 ) ... I have a pattern with some muted samples. When I use the "solo" function, it does what it does, but after I turn the "solo" off, all parts are unmuted automatically. I want the muted to stay muted, but may be that's how the Sample 2 works ? : )
Sorry I don't know, I haven't used the Sample 2!
