    Roundabouts and other road features is a good thing but in a longer time frame there should be a change in cityplanning too. In europe we have the shoppingmalls in the middle of the city within a walking distance from where people lives and not 100 miles away. Besides building bikelanes and sidewalks to connect them with shops and other local businesses should be mandatory. USA need a more healthy view on cars and road safety thats for sure.

    Something I’ve never heard discussed is “risk fatigue” or having so much perceived risk that drivers start to ignore it all together, what do you think? It’s clearly true with signs, if you have too many signs drivers stop reading them. Idk about built in infrastructure, the physical danger might be worth thinking about? But if it’s just paint they will eventually ignore it, but if it is a sharp curb then it is effective. I guess that’s the real trick, how do you make perceived risk that isn’t ignored, as well as keeping the streets safe for ambulances and fire trucks?

    Wife and I have bicycled across many states on numerous different trips. Most notable was pedaling from Canada to Mexico along the continental divide. We try when can to have our routes be a connection of non-motorized pathways but do have to mix in whatever public passage we can find to connect paths or get to stores. The 5 cities of NW Arkansas has been the best commuter biking infrastructure we’ve seen so far. Florida has been very aggravating because we keep seeing horrendously dangerous situations marked as bike lanes. We leave near enough to one that we’re usually aware of each new fatality. GoogleMaps is of no help in planning trips we know first hand of several 2 lane highways that have the green bike line on map layer. These are highways with NO shoulder, not even rideable gravel alongside the road, posted speed limits are 55 but traffic rushes at 65-70. One in particular is dangerous even in a car because of aggressive passing that results in head on collisions. Maybe it is about time to get some experienced cyclists consulted on designing or designating bicycle “infrastructure”. There are advocacy organizations that can and want to provide this. Also, there are many cases where experienced cyclists would know a lower cost solution that would actually encourage usage.

    It seems like the bike lane greatly complicated this project. Maybe bike lanes don’t need to go everywhere.

    Loving your videos because your videos aren’t “car bad, booo, spend trillions upon trillions of dollars to completely rebuild the continent and ban cars internationally.” You explain that this isn’t feasible and show that we don’t need to completely replace cars, we need to change how drivers interact with each other, and with people outside of cars. Looking forward to seeing more from you!

    Great material. Nice to see examples of places doing it right and changing! However the concept of the 'fake main street' where you go with car is so absurd for me even if I have been in USA in some suburb parks with huge parking spaces

    if i was in control, i'd separate almost all car and bike traffic from every mildly major road. bridges over intersections everywhere. cars are just not compatible with anything smaller than them. both need their own entire dedicated spaces.

    As a European, two things strike me about this - first, mini roundabouts like this are so common that you rarely see stop signs. Second, American cars are ridiculously large.

    Urban living is great, but it has to be safe & clean. If folks refer to civic improvements (like the ones you show) as 'gentrification', it's time to run.

    Suburbs never should have happened, I mean literally shouldn't exist. I've been to suburbs where normal, random residential streets are as wide as a four lane highway, where the nearest gas station is a ten minute drive, and the nearest strip mall (it is ALWAYS and ONLY a strip mall) is 30 minutes away. Who wants to live like this?

    For 10:30, If you count the individual cottages as single-family homes (which they are, but they're not detached), that surpasses the 50% mark. Great job.

    People want cars because they don't want to have to think. They want to go conveniently from Point A to Point B without compromise and cars FEEL the most efficient because they FEEL like they give us the most direct route. You're fighting psychology itself trying to get people to give up on cars.

    The problem is simple: We have too many roads and too many lanes on those roads to pay for their maintenance. The solution is just as simple. Stop building new roads and stop building new lanes. Instead of designing our towns and cities for driving, design them for walking, biking, and public transportation.

    NORTON COMMONS REPRESENT!! The architect of the community actually based the style of everything, from the fountain on the “Main Street” to the style of the homes based on the historic Old Louisville neighborhood. That’s because Old Louisville is a place everyone in town knows and admires for its urban feel. This sense of familiarity helped foster the support for NC back in the early 2000s. NC is now one of the most expensive and desirable communities in Louisville. I love it so much there, could never afford it, but I truly think it helps people here to understand what the suburbs COULD be. Lovely video, absolutely subscribed. Also fun fact, we in Louisville are trying to undergo a zoning reform that allows for the missing middle housing within the single-family zoning districts. Unfortunately KY is what it is and our state legislatures put a moratorium on zoning reform BUT it should go into effect mid-2025. Stay tuned for it!

    An example of another poorly designed interchange. One obvious flaw is the wasted space of the center grass median. The bike lane should be grade separated from the road far from shoulder. Putting it in the middle is stupid.

    I gtfo of florida a few years ago amd live in chicago now. Life long florida sub division liver and my life has never been better getting out and away from that soul less style of living. Florida ia becoming one of the lowest quality of life states in the country and people there keep voting for the ones making it worse

    Lookup Main St. in Farmington NM. They switched our 4 lane Main St. thru downtown to a 2 lane road with a single lane roundabout every 1/4 mile. It killed a lot of businesses in the area and lots of people don’t drive downtown anymore because of the roundy rounds.

    living in europe, that sounds like a no brainer, that said, car dependent single-use zones exist here too.
