    Thanks for the advice! Had this 2012 sport for 9 months and it just started today after an oil change. Wondering what the root cause is, if anyone has any insight. They checked my battery and it’s still in the green. And they had me turn the ignition 2 clicks and then press the gas all the way down and up 3 times to reset the oil change light. That’s when this started and it’s been twice in the same day. First time nothing work and then the oil change guy said to try pushing gas 5 times. Don’t know if I got lucky or if this worked.

      It's a Teraflex HD hinge and tire carrier which has mounting points for some of their own accessories. I just used those points. Benefits of mine is the rack weights 36 pounds where their rack weights over 90.

      Ya they stopped and thanked us. We warned them of another group coming down as well. Funny story, we went back in 2022 and met up with a lone Jeep XJ at a really narrow section. They had a short reverse to a switchback but wouldn't do it. (I got the impression they weren't the best drivers) Since there were no pullouts close to me I ended up having to drive along the bank and squeeze by with only inches to spare. They blamed me for having a JK because it was too wide...

    5:28 Hanging off the rack and have it support your weight is not the same as bouncing the loaded rack down a washboard road, it is the load over time and the metal fatigue that ends up causing problems. Since your dad is a metal fabricator he probably knows the best material (aluminum alloy) for the application, but for the shade tree mechanic to go get 1" aluminum square tubing from Home Depot and cobbling this together might end up in a precarious situation when the aluminum fails. I was thinking of getting one of those trailer hitch racks for Princess Auto and doing some thing similar but this looks really good. I see you posted this 2 years a go how is it holding out?

    • @OkanaganOverland
      @OkanaganOverland 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the detailed comment! The rack is holding out really well! There was one section where a weld didn't have great penetration on the maxtrax holder part and cracked after about a year but was re-welded and has been fine since. During camping season I typically carry a 20l jerry of gas, chainsaw, and 5lb propane on it. I agree that hanging off of it isn't a perfect demonstration of strength but I like to think that being able to hang 200lbs+ on just the weakest corner lends itself to a fairly high confidence that it can support 50lbs or so dynamically when evenly distributed. The alloy wasn't much of a consideration I just went to the metal shop and bought aluminum tubing, and had them cut the pieces for the maxtrax holder from sheet. (They may have asked my application and suggested what they thought best). Brackets and odds and ends just came from a scrap pile. I think what really saves me from metal fatigue is that the spare snugs up against the drivers side support cutting that lever arm to probably 1/4 and I feel allows the tire to act as a shock absorber.

    I drive a 2 wheel drive suburban(rwd) and I run nokian studded snow tires. I'm able to drive steep snow covered roads in the mountains with ease. It's only when they get extremely steep that I'm unable to keep going. If I had 4WD with the nokians I'd feel unstoppable. For reference I'm talking about roads covered with 1-1½ feet of snow

    • @OkanaganOverland
      @OkanaganOverland 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have studded Nokian tires on my daily (AWD RAV4) and agree they are amazing tires. That said studs are going to do nothing in deep snow. They really only serve a purpose in compact snow and ice. This review was only really to compare two options of 4 season (all weather) tires. A dedicated winter will perform much better then either in winter conditions.

    • @amishadowbanned6264

      @@OkanaganOverland Hey I should have mentioned the first time that I really enjoyed the video and I'm glad you made it. I appreciated the comparison and I watched the whole thing! I understand what you're saying and that's the reason I watched to see how they did in deep snow. One of the reasons I made the comment was a lot of four wheel drive and jeep folks don't seem to understand how beneficial snow tires are in relatively deep snow. And I've met lots of people that don't realize that some all season AT tires don't do so well in snow and icy conditions

    • @OkanaganOverland
      @OkanaganOverland 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@amishadowbanned6264 Thanks! Glad you enjoyed and appreciate the comments. It's always fun watching big built rigs out on the trails with massive tires struggling when a typical pickup with factory sized tires better suited to the conditions can outperform. For my Jeep which is just a toy I do still want to run mountain snowflake rated tires to have a little edge in winter but will sacrifice a full winter to have a more aggressive tread pattern for deep snow.
