Hey, I'm having trouble with my offside roll. I'm having a lot of trouble getting the boat flat and getting under the boat. I have a black fly option and my onside roll is feeling very solid. Have any suggestions? Or strokes to pull myself under the boat?

Hey! I have trouble getting completely under the boat sometimes as well. I've used onside to offside paddle sweeps under the water - keeping the tgrip close to my core and engaging my core to move my upper body under the boat. Depending on the depth of the water, the sweep angle can vary. Your pfd wants to float and if your upper body is close to the surface, you'll need to push yourself and pfd under the boat. Rocking your knees back and forth and tucking close to the onside deck can help with the transition to flat as well. Experimenting with the sweep to pivot the boat around on your onside may help too since you are comfortable there.

Half the blade, twice the paddler. All jokes aside, canoeing can make easy rivers more challenging and a very easy craft for self rescue. Definitely harder, definitely a fun alternative to kayaking :)

I haven't tried it yet but I can one hand roll my kayak and feel like I might have a serious shot at rolling a (small) canoe from this video first try 😀

Awesome! I’ve been whitewater kayaking since 2018 and grew up on a knee board every weekend. I’m just now becoming curious about ditching half the paddle. It’s great to see a well done video randomly pop up on TH-cam that solves some mysteries, and leaves me feeling like I could definitely learn at least a pool roll pretty quickly. Actually seems simpler than rolling a kayak in some aspects, yet finishes the same as a back deck roll in a kayak. The higher CG is what would really make it feel odd by comparison I think. I need to try this out…

Had the best progress today, based on this video. Really helped me set up and realize I had to practice getting in that position. 👍👍👍 I need to do a lot of conditioning tho

Really well done set of instructions. When I was learning. After some work I had a pretty reliable roll. A friend who was a much better paddler than I, offered to take me on a trip down a river that was more challenging than I was accustomed to. He required 10 rolls consecutively, 30 second rest then 10 more , without a miss. If I could do that I could go. Took me some months to learn to be efficient enough. Along the way I thought I’ll never be able to do this. Eventually I got it and really opened my paddling confidence.

Haaaa Haaaa! Were you reading a magazine at 8:50? That's awesome. Really great, thorough description! I'd like to have a roll. Would give me confidence to tackle bigger stuff. Thanks for doing this!
