Baby Tapir Loves Her Mama
Baby tapir loves her mama at ZooTampa in Tampa, Florida. Grateful for a first peek at Malayan tapir mama "Ubi" spending time with her 2-month old calf "Munah" in their habitat. Since pregnancies last 13 months and mamas only have one baby at a time, it's rare to get a glimpse of the little ones. In tropical lowland rainforests of Southeast Asia where this tapir species originates, spots and stripes are the perfect camouflage for calves, blending in well with the spotted sunlight. At 5 months old Munah's spots and stripes will be gone, but she will remain with her mama for 12-18 months feasting on leaves, vegetables and fruits with her "prehensile" snout. Today's tapirs are estimated to have evolved 5-25 million years ago...often called "living fossils." They appear to be a cross between a pig and an anteater, but actually are closely related to rhinos and horses.

      They do look so prehistoric and maybe it's the way they walk slowly, but decisively that makes them seem like they're from another time. Yes, I keep a careful distance and don't block them from their destination. Most of the time the alligators seem unaffected by onlookers, but sometimes they will stop short of crossing and wait cautiously to see if their passage will be safe before starting up again. 😂 I guess not, Frank - better luck next time for the male! I agree with you about the little gators…sometimes they are making their escape from the big gators and end up in the middle of the trail. The low water adds to the challenge for little ones as they look for canals and marshes that aren’t dried up. We definitely need some rain here. I saw a big gator chasing three little ones in the marsh a few days ago. Fortunately, they were faster and escaped into vegetation.

    They are getting more independent but they are still babies. It looks like it's going to be awhile before they catch anything! They still have their baby fluff. One summer I had an owl camped outside my bedroom window and woke me up every night. I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed their journey! I have one last video of the siblings before they moved on to new territories and deeper in the woods. Interestingly enough, the larger owls are females. The most likely reason for this is that females remain with the nest, while males are off on the hunt. Therefore, females must be able to fend off predators like other birds of prey, raccoons, crows, etc that would attempt to hurt/eat eggs or owlets. Their larger size makes them more formidable and less likely to be bothered.

Fortunately, all went well. Yes, they love meal time. One time mom gave the older owlet a lizard and as she left you could tell from expressions and sounds that the owlet wasn’t impressed! 😂 I think the snake hit the spot, though.

      @MichelleSiefkenPhotography 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for your input, Frank! At first when I saw them together I thought I'd take a few cute pics and move on, because I've seen gators and turtles hanging out together on several occasions. Because there were fire ants biting and bothering this gator, he/she was more agitated and in turn more interested in the turtle. At that point I started filming wondering what would happen next. So true that this gator is smaller and couldn't tackle swallowing this turtle's shell. The turtle probably would have been in more danger with a larger gator. However, when the turtle stuck its neck out, within inches of the gator's jaws, I thought the gator might consider grabbing just the neck. Maybe the gator isn't able to size up the situation that way or maybe he/she just wasn't hungry...I guess we'll never know for sure. Mysteries of nature and wildlife! Have a great weekend!

    Pain and simple, orangutans are people. They're not as far down their path as we are down ours, but they're people. They love their kids, they have squabbles, they laugh, they care, they form friendships.... thank you for this gorgeous video!

      It’s an amphiuma (salamander) - look closely for its 4 tiny legs! 😁

    That salamander is called an amphiuma. They can get quite long and have a nasty bite. People have reported needing stiches after receiving bites from it. They are also a favorite food for red-bellied mudsnakes.

      Thank you for watching and providing more info about amphiumas. I had to re-watch the video multiple times to be sure it had 4 legs - so difficult to see, but they’re there!

      This is an amphiuma and has 4 very tiny legs, though hard to see…I had to study the video for awhile afterwards to see them). The amphiuma probably wished it had bigger legs and feet - maybe that would have given it a fighting chance!
