A Case Study On The Formation of The Underground Scholars
Ryan Flaco Rising looks at the formation of the Underground Scholars an how an unprecedented number of people have been enrolling in California Community Colleges and Universities following incarceration, arguably representing the most recent wave in the movement against mass incarceration.
Groups representing formerly incarcerated students have formed at community colleges, California State Universities, and the University of California.
However, relatively little is known about how participation in them might shape the post incarceration experiences and outcomes of formerly incarcerated individuals.
Existing research suggests that post release outcomes are predicted by the occurrence of key life events (e.g., marriage, graduation, gainful employment) that serve as a turning point in the life course trajectories of those who commit crime (Laub and Sampson)
Some scholars have built on these ideas, examining ways in which these events produce cognitive transformations that serves as "hooks for change" in those who experience them (Giordano)
Other work on formerly incarcerated re-entry on the role of identity transformation in the reentry process (Maruna 2001, Honeywell, 2018)
Ryan Flaco Rising looks at how the Underground Scholars community within the University of California has become an agency for formerly incarcerated students to create a transformation of self and entrench themselves into activism and community service that creates a hook for change and allows them to desist from being trapped back into the cycle of recidivism.

ISLA VISTA PD HARASSING STUDENTS

My fiance and I are on the phone with each other as we're walking to meet up for lunch, that's when I hear an altercation on the other end of line. 3 cops hop out of their truck and ask for his name and ask if he's on probation or parole. This violates his rights since he was under no suspicion of criminal activity, the cop said he "looks familiar" We just moved here 2 months, so how does he "l...

    I went to UC, Santa Barbara from 1977-1980. Isla Vista had no cops. Everybody except us jocks was smoking bongs on their porches and balconies, and in Peoples' Park, and nobody gave a fuck. Too bad the students have allowed the police (likely SB County Sheriff's Dept.) to get into the area like this. Students burned the Isla Vista Bank of America to the ground during the Vietnam War and nobody was ever caught. Nobody had ever heard of AIDS and using condoms was unheard of. Those the days, my friends. We didn't know how good we had it. Such days shall not be known again.

    The cops in IV are out of control. All they do is ticket and harass the students instead of addressing the acts of vandalism, destruction of property, and theft that take place in IV on a daily basis.

    Fuck SB Sheriffs, they harassed me too. I know and follow all the laws for bicycles (unlike most students). They stopped their vehicle in my predicted path and waited for ~4 minutes for a light to change, to follow me, hoping I would make a mistake. They would have pulled anyone else over, but certainly not me. Fuck them. (when I signaled left at the stop sign, I put my left hand out while flipping them off to signal)

    I see the IV cops haven't changed a bit in the nearly two decades since I was attending UCSB. Just there to write tickets, "community policing" gets talked about, but it's all about generating revenue.

    no his rights were NEVER violated, because he refused to comply by answering questions. But a cop can ask you questions at anytime. I'll do it now. Can I see your ID? Can I talk to you? I didnt violate your rights and neither did this cop because he stood his ground. Your husband needs to learn to stand silent and only say, I INVOKE MY RIGHT TO SILENCE. OR AM I BEING DETAINED? But well done standing tall in the face of tyranny.

    • @lisab2287
      @lisab2287 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      We were on the phone with each other when the confrontation started. That's exactly what he was asking the officer "am I being detained? Can I go?" He has a right to ask but NO RIGHT to racially profile him. When he refused to answer his question, the altercation was escalating until I showed up to videotape

    • @sketch6995
      @sketch6995 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lisab2287 well he did well. It's scary standing tall in the face of an armed tyrant, and you tend to forget things easily. But it was the presence of the camera that forced that cop to back off. If you hadn't have been there to record, the cop would definitely have escalated the situation and most likely arrested him for contempt of cop. And resisting and anything else he could have made up. In the end you won by walking away free.

      Yes, please do! There is a correction here, they're sheriff's not IVPD. He said he looked like he was from a "custody setting" So this means he just jumps out at students randomly, interrogates them, and build his profiles! Shame on them.. thanks for sharing! KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!
