Freelander 1 - I made a mistake
Thanks for watching! I don't think the video has really shown how beaten up the car is now, but we'll get it back to its former glory soon!

Freelander 1 - Update Video
มุมมอง 7K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Hello everyone, sorry for not having uploaded in a while. Here is just a quick update on where we are now with the freelander and some of the things we have done since the last video. I hope you enjoyed!
My Freelander 1 - Some negatives
มุมมอง 10K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi everyone, thanks for watching. This is a video about the imperfections and what needs doing to the car. I also go through a few things that I have done over the past few days. Look out for more videos coming soon. 👍
Freelander 1 - My first car!
มุมมอง 2.6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi everyone, I’m almost 17 years old and this is my first car. If you like land rovers I will be uploading all changes I make to the car so look out for those. These changes will be related to aesthetics, repairs, and accessories. *just to mention I haven’t yet got the ‘ROVER’ bonnet lettering only the ‘LAND’ but it will be coming very soon. Thanks👍
Hi .How can I find front headlight cover plastic size?
Hi, i can't get access to the youtube channel anymore, so no more videos! I ended up selling a few days later to a friend for a major profit, so I couldn't say no. I do miss it a lot though, going to buy another 3 door in a few months
Any update on this? Haven’t got my one on the road yet, hopefully soon though.
Nice mats where did you get it?! Best regards
Looks great. Any updates? 2023 now.
Have you taken the roof off yet?
Many times.
Hi. Nice car! Beautiful! From São Paulo, Brazil!
Roof bars gone. Prop shaft gone too?
I'll bet the new prop cost more than the car is valued at?@@jamesmann5766
I put a brand new prop shaft in as the original was knackered
Hi from Malta, exactly the same free lander but mine is silver grey
Should have both hands on the steering wheel not resting left arm on centre console.
Very Nice. I Have the same but with silver Colour.
Great to see you bought it back! I too have an 06 freelander TD4 and honestly I'm probably going to just keep it for as long as I can, keep fixing it when it breaks etc. I'm 21 and most people our age want to newest and the best cars (all financed up the wazoo) and I just couldn't think of anything worse lol. I always see people giving them a bad rep but honestly these freelanders are so basic there's not much to go wrong with them unlike modern LR's, I know a guy with a freelander 1 that has 500k miles on it's orignal TD4 engine!
You sound just like me! Glad to hear there is another young freelander 1 owner like me. I agree, most people our age want a Golf R or an M140i, all financed up. I’m quite happy with my old freelander that I bought outright, they are very basic and cheap to maintain and reliable as anything! 500k miles is quite an achievement, to be honest though I’m not surprised, they are incredible cars! I hope you enjoy yours for years to come😊
Does it have the Exhaust Gas Recirculator (EGR) bypassed and uprated 'Vortex' Crankcase breather fitted? The latter can cause engine/turbo damage in the long term if overlooked, as the old foam type filter can clog up with oil
I don't know the answer to both of those questions at the moment but if not I'll definitely have a look into it. Thanks for the comment!
@@HawkinsFarm Your welcome :)
What is the purpose of bypassing the EGR? BMW put it there for a reason, right?@@pistonhedd
I bought a facelift Freelander 1 last month, been well cared for and modified in comparison. Some folk just don't give a toss, good luck with the clean up :)
Sounds great! Lovely cars. Yes you are absolutely right, couldn't give a toss! I should have done a more detailed video really. The smell of dog was so horrible, along with the bed of dirt underneath the seats. The scratches and dents on the outside of the car as well. I'm working on it at the moment though and I'll post another video when it's all sorted👍
You know these are the BMW facelift Freelander 1 and they weren't as good as the old ... British Aerospace design. You could pull the heater knobs off the BMW facelift but they looked nice but were a cheapened, sped up production version. You know all that damage was likely to have been done by the presenter of this video, easy come, easy go Farming people. That's why BAE Systems wanted rid of Land Rover, the Farming Community are not BMW's from new buyers. Farmers are hard owners and it might be said that Kilmaron Castle in Scotland had been acquired by such owners and it just got dry rot and was demolished. Then the crummy residents had said 'oh sh*t' and built a small house beside the estate gardens that they'd lived in and found more to their taste. Farming people are not very good at caring for machinery, they're good land workers but that Freelander above says what Farming people are like.
@@keplermission4947 Of course I know that this is the BMW facelift. In my opinion they are much nicer than the previous model and I disagree that they are ‘cheapened’. Mine has been perfect and I’ve owned a few now, not a single issue during my ownership. I would imagine that, if you have owned one then you have just had a bad experience of them and you’ve bought a duff one unfortunately. I can’t say the same for my experience. Also, if you look at my previous videos you will know that my aim was to get this car looking perfect, I’m not sure why I would damage it myself. I mean I’m not doing it for money, I barely ever post and don’t make money from TH-cam. I’m not a farmer either, I know the lady I sold it to and she is no farmer. She just didn’t look after the car at all. So the car above does not say what farming people are like at all. I don’t know why you’d make a comment like that with no knowledge of this particular car or the owner.
@@HawkinsFarm Well that's all good, 'old fruit', but you know we got the wrong term there didn't we, and we don't want to making any more clumsy mistakes like that do we? This model above is the 'softback' version and has that rear safety cage, you know (to make it obvious). I don't want to hurt your feelings in pointing that out but the hardback is not what you refer to as a 'hard top'. We did get the Freelander 1 with the softback safety cage and hardback fitted but the hardtop in Freelander parlance, refers to a model that has no sunroof; that those of us (of a certain vintage) saw two types of:- the tinted glass double lifting hatches and another one that rolled back with a winder handle. The 'hardtop' that you've got confused with was just a steel roof, one that had no sunroof, that was our 'hard top' but you know your video ... makes it very hard ... to see just what your Freelander has by way of a roof. We need as cameraman you to be our eyes and well ... if you know about 'Bad Form', Farming people and all that, dry rot ignored, easy come, easy go, buy cheap and without feelings you'd have acquired upon coughing up a higher price. Still I suppose you're young and inexperienced in the subject.
@@keplermission4947I would argue that calling it a ‘hard top’, as most people do is fairly accurate. Anyway, I haven’t got time for this, I don’t know why you’d comment on a video like this with such negativity, get yourself a job or a hobby!👍
I have a little problem. I have a Freelander 1 TD4 with BMW and I have a horrible sound in the area of the auxiliary belt and its tensioner. My surprise is that there is no place to work on the auxiliary belt and remove its tensioner. Could someone tell me if there is any trick or procedure that could help me so that I do not have to remove the engine. We've been thinking about how to do it for days. Thank you very much
Would you recommend freelander 2 ?
I would yes they are very good motors
Any updates since this?
Unfortunately not, I've sold that freelander and bought another. Going to do a similar sort of thing to this new one as I did to the grey one so keep an eye out for another upload!
@@HawkinsFarm Ah nice. I look forward to it.
How come you sold it any particular reason?
@mattwilde332 I recently bought a blue 5 door of the same age. The 5 door is just more practical for me. I had a lot of fun modifying the grey one and I'd just like to do it again to this new one. There wasn't anything wrong with the grey one really, it didn't drive as nice as this new one but I wasn't too bothered really. I haven't done much yet to the new one but I'll make another video soon like I did with the grey one. Hope that helps👍
@@HawkinsFarm cheers.mate yeah I agree i prefer the 5 door that's what I'm getting
How much was the car to buy if you dont mind mate?
No problem, I paid £2500 for it but it needed a few things doing to get it running nice and how I wanted it. So initial cost was about £3000 before buying all the different accessories
Thank you and are you still driving it now, no problems or anything?
@@mattwilde332 yep, all good and no problems👍
Wicked Freelander there! Have you used it for any green-laning?
Thank you! I haven't actually but would love to do it at some point.
Hi mate, as I'm going to do the same and get a freelander as my first car what insurance did you pay for your first year at 17 out of interest?
Sounds good👍 I paid £1200 with a black box. My dad was a named driver though so it bought it down a bit. Hope that helps!
Yes thanks mate cheers 👍
How much is insurance for a 17 year old? Also what reliability like?
Insurance was £1200 for my first year with a black box. Mine has been quite reliable really, no engine issues at all. We did have a knocking from the suspension a few months ago which ended up being a £500 fix but other than that nothing else.
@@HawkinsFarm Awesome! Would you recommend it over a basic fiesta, corsa or polo etc for a new 17 year old driver?
@@quervy4097 Absolutely! For a car lover like myself I find fiestas and polo's quite boring. Although financially it'll be a better choice, I never regret buying my freelander. It feels like an adventure evertime I drive it!
@@HawkinsFarm Thanks for all the info! Do you have any tips on how to a get a great quote like 1200 on insurance?
@@quervy4097 I wouldn't say I have any tips unfortunately, I just put in all my details and it gave me that quote. I did have my dad as a named driver though which brought it down a bit. Insurance prices may have gone up a bit since last year though due to everything that's been going on.
great video wherer did u get the mat in the back from?
Thank you. I got the mat from ebay👍
Im new here
OK !
No hate dude but coming from a freelander owner, yours is pretty immaculate. It's an old Landrover they are meant to have scratches and imperfections. Don't try make a landy perfect because it never will be. Enjoy it for what it is mate... That's what I've learnt with both my freelanders I've owned. The are shite to drive but full of character and they do everything so in my opinion can't get a better cheap 4x4 for the money
Completely agree, thanks for the comment!👍
Good choice james 👍🏽
Love what you've done to it mate, looks like totally different car! You'll be too scared to drive it now it looks so good
Thanks a lot for the comment, it does look great now!
Such a nice version of a fundamentally great car. What’s the original engine In it, and the tune you used please?
Hello, thanks for the comment. The original engine is the 2 litre 4 cylinder TD4, I'm not sure which tune was used. We took it to a land rover specialist who did it for us.
Frumoasă mașină! 👍
I bought my 2003 Land Rover freelander 1 tree-door Td4 VAN variant four weeks ago, and it’s also my first car and i am 19. You got a sub here buddy!
Thanks mate, sounds good. Enjoy it! 👍
You remind me of myself 😅 dude get new wheels those rounded ones don't suit the car, I have a 5 door version of your car, I think its even the same colour! One comment i do have on your vid... its a landy! A few scratches and bumps add character. If you spend all your time painting tiny defects you'll never have time to actually enjoy the car.
Thanks for the comment. I have had the car 10 months now (I know I haven't posted😂). I completely agree with the wheels, I've now bought the 18 inch sport wheels which look great. I also agree, it is a landy. I haven't had little bits done, like scratches and dents and it still looks great. However I probably have one of the best ones in the country now, I've spent a lot of money on it and you'll see how it looks in an update video I'm posting within the next week or so. It looks almost completely different! Stick around and let me know what you think when you see it. Thanks 👍
😂😂😂
I use to have one gutless in first second third gears ok.
It’s an 06 plate dude. I’d say it’s an amazing car. If you made a video of the positives, you’d be there all night. Great video.
Absolutely, I love it! Making an update video soon, you should see it now!
What insurance company did you go with and is it cheaper to get 5 door or 3 door
I’m with Tesco bank (it was the cheapest one). Cost was £1150 with a black box which is pretty good for a first car. I haven’t had a quote for a 5 door so I don’t know which one would be cheaper. It should be the 3 door seeing as it is a smaller car.
Someone has nicked your Rover 😄
I was the one that nicked it.😁 someone thought it looked good to have ‘land’ in grey and ‘rover’ in black🙄
@@HawkinsFarm Yea I think that will look cool and different which is what all Landy Owners are trying to do good luck for the future buddy
I have a land rover Freelander 1 best car I have ever owned I can tell some BMW parts do fit on the land rover Freelander never buy a 1.8 Freelander head casket blow and the wireing is from mg and rover as well I'm slowly doing my one up
Had mine nearly 6 months ago now and I absolutely love it. Agreed I wouldn’t go near the 1.8. Thanks for the comment!
Completely agree dude, I'm onto my second TD4. Yes they are old, slow, and drive like a bus but they are very good at what they do and very reliable... Well they are from my experience... Again yes the 1.8's are shit, they eat heads for fun and least reliable engine you can go with with a freelander... Hence why the TD4 BMW engine is much more well built lol
Why is the 1.8 a choice? Is it because it lacks power? I got the 1.8 for a good price and I am considering to buy it. Coming from a Corolla, I was thinking it would be a good upgrade.
This is not Freelander 1
Yep this is a 3 door Freelander 1 TD4 2006
Defo is a freelander 1 face-lift, I have two of them!😊
I’m thinking about getting a freelancer for my first car. What size engine is this one?
This is a 2.0 litre. Don’t go for the 1.8 petrol as they are common with head gasket issues.
@@HawkinsFarmtrue!
Hey. Thnks for making this video I am a land Rover fan. This is in my mind too. To buy a land Rover freelander. Can u tell more abt how it is to run on day to day. How to maintanance.
It runs well on a day to day basis mpg is higher than you might expect. Overall you get a lot of car for the money. I’m really enjoying mine and have had no issues. Absolutely go for it, just make sure you choose carefully👍
Great video chap, how much is the insurance as i am torn between a freelander and a suzuki jimny.
Thank you very much for the comment, surprisingly insurance is quite cheap. I got a quote for £1056 and next cheapest was about £1200.👍
Fully comp
@@HawkinsFarmthank you for the reply, i was anticipating the insurance to be far more expensive.
So was I, make sure to get a manual (not that there are many autos) to keep insurance low and you’ll be good to go.
