Tech Talk | The GOAT of Porsche interior trimmers - Dave The Trimmer
มุมมอง 173หลายเดือนก่อน
I agonised over who to use for interior trimming. With any company I choose to use for my Outlaw Cayman, the hope is that I'll have a great experience so that when it comes to building the RENN550, I've got the relationships and trust in place to know the product at the end is what I'm looking for. I'm frustratingly difficult as a customer. I have such high expectations of people that it's rare...

Sometimes a car gains its own following. No one really knows how it happens, but the internet lights up with chatter. This 997.1 GT3 picked up its own fan club, not because of the spec or having some fancy PTS colour, but because of the miles the car has on it (currently 188000 miles). I originally met Henry, the owner, at Goodwood during the Flat6 show, but we had been chatting on and off over...

Did you ever buy the green leaf intake
We’re working on the details at the moment. Yes one is coming. When is the question as the Gold Leaf guys and I are looking at how we can collab.
@ Awsome 👍🏼
What an amazing guy. A real gentleman, with great values. A motorcyclist and enthusiast to boot. Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Well done!
Really appreciate that. There are few like baz these days. A true legend.
I have a GT4 981 I’d like the all black steering wheel, assume I’d have to buy the GT4 718 wheel which I’ll try and find
Definitely doable! Good luck.
How has it been going? You are close 5k subscribers. That is really good. I have been a little burned out on cars lately so I have focused on the two wheelers for the time being. Take care, Michael
I am considering putting Erisin in my 981 did they get back to you, I have done 5 France road trips using Garmin but would prefer a built in Nav does in run through your phone using your data when in France or does it run independently of phone
They did and deemed it an acceptable “function” that if the car goes unused for a while CANBUS sets the unit to deep sleep. The only way to revive it is to disconnect the main power supply and reconnect it. That is the fix. It’s not ideal but until PCCM comes out, it’s a small inconvenience. Just drive the car regularly hey… 😅
@@Renngineering did you ever fit the DAB if so was it any good
@@Renngineering thanks 👍
Well worth the hour spent watching this video (and I'm not usually fond of watching long videos). I've read Barry Hart's comments in internet forums and have always been impressed by his engineering knowledge. This is the first time I've seen him in the flesh (so to speak) and he sounds just as smart and just as honest as I had expected him to be. The Porsche community is fortunate to have people like Barry who can devise durable solutions for some of the less durable engines out there.
Can't believe you only have 194 views and 2 comments ! Barry Hart is a genius, I can't wait to get my 997.1 converted to 'Eco ' with a 4.1 capacity upgrade. I keep phoning but they are always busy. Good job I'm patient.......hopefully soon Tobias? Smashing presentation Barry. Thank you sir .
Me either 😆 TH-cam loves you or hates you. I don’t make click bait content and don’t intend to. The quality of the conversation is important to me. The content will find its home. On the flip - the audio on the podcast is doing really well. Stick with Hartech and the patience game. I’ve learned over the year that it’s absolutely worth waiting for the best. Thanks for the kind comments.
@@Renngineering Thanks, I will do. I'll catch them in a quiet spell and get my 911 booked in. Can't wait really. Best Wishes !
Really enjoyed that what a great chat, thank you for sharing.
I’m really glad you enjoyed it! Loads more episodes on here and dozens on the podcast…
Cost?
It’s too early to be confident of a final price. The intent isn’t to generate enormous profit though. So the price will reflect the cost plus sufficient margin to progress further. There will be transparency around cost throughout the build.
Great video. Can I ask where you ordered your Porsche decals for the sides of your car please? Looking to get some for mine
Absolutely. Design Stuff Online. If you call/email, just mention me and I’m sure John will look after you.
I've watched a few interviews with Frank as the subject, this is the best by far significantly down to the interaction between yourself and Frank and the questions you asked. Fantastic video.
Amazing feedback. Thank you so much. I’m going through a lull in motivation at the moment and that was the boost I needed.
@@Renngineering My pleasure.
You just need a therapist!
😂
I am really interested. It sounds like quite an undertaking for sure. I have so many questions about it too. I would place an order but I am guessing it will be very expensive.
Cost is an interesting one. Profit-making isn't a primary objective here and early adoption will always be valued and held in the highest esteem. That partnership will be a long one so it's as much a partnership with the client as it is with the partners involved.
dude just gets design! Awesome stuff man..
Oh dude, just wait. A full explanation video is coming. I’m a perfectionist so this will be a slow build. Totally worth it though.
They say having hobbies keeps us engaged, this stuff keeps us invigorated! Can't wait to experience the build out. We'll be here for it all, including some of the craziness too, lol. Really cool video. Did you do that yourself?@@Renngineering 🚕
Interesting take on the hobby aspect. Whilst not my day job, my profession is an engineer and the project will be treated like a systems engineering project. Suuuper in-depth and possibly not shown on TH-cam before!
Also, thank you for the support and happy to have you onboard!
The shifter is on the wrong side. 😉
Moving a shifter around is limited impact. A client would have the opportunity to discuss customisation to their specific needs.
Now I am curious.
Good! It’s going to need a lot energy and curiosity from people to make it a success.
Where do i wire the money?

Those rear lights 🤤
Pretty amazing hey...
why don't you paint your seats back plastic covers in white same as your dash trim pieces...would look nice
Love your insight! Actually the seat backs are going Irish green Alcantara in may! I’ll update with the finished interior then. Thanks for watching.
The Metzger is such a sonorous and robust engine.
That was the first time going out in one and wow!
This channel to the moon 🚀🚀🚀
😁 LFG!!
That's gorgeous
Agreed.
whats that white thing in your center grill
It's a Porsche 75 years enamel grille badge. White ones are 1 of 200 and black are slightly larger and 1 of a few thousand from memory.
What a beauty. 😍
It really is!
Great to see photos and video with these talks now :)
Glad you like them! Lots more to come!

Sorry to hear that, I installed kw v3. In my cayman, I purposely wanted a non pasm car as the v3 was always my intention as I have them in another car, have to say they put the standard shocks to shame, could drop it to hit the floor if I wanted and the quality is fantastic, even on my other car I lost a resistor due to an installation issue and kw customer service had two new ones with me by the end of the week free of charge.
That’s really solid feedback! I was always aware this was a half way measure and tried to call out my failings as well as the kit. Glad you’ve had a great experience. Springs held up ok?
@@Renngineering yep springs are grand in my other car with near 30k on them thanks
Interesting! I’ll reach out to KW and update.
@@Renngineering yes I definitely would, I would say any deviation from the fitting instructions and your beat but I did exactly as instructed and they realised the issue and made good without question. 👍
Looks amazing Paul! I know I’ve said this before, but that rev counter is incredible! Perfect for the car. One suggestion: you might consider not trimming the steering wheel in alcantara. Several friends of mine have either changed steering wheels or covered the alcantara in leather because they didn’t like the way it felt and/or it wore very quickly with use. One person I know told me he always wears driving gloves so he doesn’t get body oils on the alcantara wheel. Just a thought.
Thanks for the feedback! Alcantara is a funny one. You can get great cleaning solutions now that mean it last so much longer than it did. Ultimately there is an element of acceptance needed that it’ll age. Dirt shouldn’t be a problem but yep it’ll patina for sure.
I recommend alcantara steering wheels. The downside is expense and keeping it fresh. The second point should be no problem for you I think. You seem fastidious to me. I on the other hand ruined a couple with grease and grit because a) I am a human monkey b) I did not clean and brush it often enough. Many times did I jump in the car after working on it for hours and proceed to test drive the car with dirty grimey hands. I would like to do a stereo upgrade but I also love the appeal of outdated interior appointments. It takes me back to when the car was new. I just wish I could find a Porsche cassette deck for the GT3. No, seriously. That is my idea of an upgrade! Take care man. Love the vidz. --Michael
Thanks Michael! Thanks for the lovely comments as well. I’ve got a cover that if I’m working on the car, I put on. That way the cover gets filthy but the steering wheel stays fine. It’ll age though for sure, but doesn’t put me off. I love the idea of a fully retro version of a car! Did they do a cassette deck for the 997?
Love the decals, the amber repeaters, the whole front end, its all in the details and i think it all gels well ❤ Does the spoiler still rise?
Thanks so much! It does mate yeah. I’m looking to set it to not rise and it can be done. Scotty and I haven’t worked it out yet though. You set the height to 200mph effectively and it stop it rising.
Enjoying the vids on your 981 👍🏻 I also have a 981 in a manual flavour. I was wondering where you got the self adhesive front number plate from and is it legal? Also, you may have mentioned it in a previous vid but which exhaust did you get in the end? Cheers.
Thanks man. Appreciate that. I think Fancy Plates. I typically get all my plates made there as the quality is generally spot on. As far as I’m aware it’s legal! It’s been through an MOT! Exhaust is Designtek Valvetronix
@@Renngineering Ok, cheers for that ✌🏻
No worries!
I would have never guessed the ducktail was aftermarket. The shape flows so well into the tailights. Nice touch!👌 Orange side indicators - brilliant choice. They look good on certain colours, notably white. Not so good on a black car in my view. How did you attach the mesh to your front intakes? I'm getting sick of vaccuuming leaves out of my radiators.
I was gobsmacked as well. It’s great quality. I think it’s just you and me with the ambers but I’ll take it. 😅 mesh I bought some zip tie sticky pads, removed the sticky pad and used stikaflex to hold them on. The zip tied the mesh to those. Makes replacement easy.
@@Renngineering Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a go the next time I have the front bumper off.
Looking good, I like the decal on the rear but not so sure about the side decals,- but that is a personal choice, Have the mods given you any grief from your insurers? One reason I have kept my car relatively standard
Thanks for the feedback! I think that’s my overall thinking. It’s all personal preference and what’s important is to consider the end look before you start. Insurance no problem at all. It’s up for renewal so I’ll be looking at agreed value this time around based on condition.
Thank your another great video Paul. I also just added the aluminium fuel cap. Sadly my high pressure fuel pump started to fail (long crank times when cold, sometimes not enough pressure when starting the cars... 80.000km on the clock... i heard this is a "common" problem) Did you have any mechanical issue with the car? I heard good and bad thing with the mesh what you installed: It can be blocking 30% of the air for cooling.
I’m sorry you’ve got car trouble my dude! I have heard of the HPFP failing but haven’t (yet) had that happen. Let me know how it goes with the fix and costs info@renngineering.com In terms of mesh. There’s definitely a very small reduction in flow because you have a smaller volume of air flowing through the radiators at any one time. Can I calculate that? Possibly but it would take a while. Can I test it? Yes and I’ve driven all around the south of France and in to the alps so high temps and high altitude. Did I see an increase in engine temperature that could be attributed to the mesh? No. Coolant temps have been rock solid. The other question is, does the risk of slightly more restrictive flow outweigh the risk of a radiator being pierced by a foreign object? No way.. that’s a critical failure with minimal warning. An overheating engine will give you a solid warning and in my case has been proven to be ok. Long answer but hope that helps!
@@Renngineering Good to hear that. I think with the 718 the mesh is a factory option. The hHPFP part is 1200 eur and the labour is 2-4 hours. I will let you know when it finished. I love the vintage 911s/t badge where did you find that part?
Just from Porsche! I don’t remember the price but I think around £120.
Possibly due to its sporting heritage, Porsche is one of a handful of brands whose cars lend themselves to personalisation via decals. I've done it on mine, kept it low key as I wanted the form of the car to shine. The designers at Porsche design studio must have sweated bullets to get the appearance of the car right and I doubt if I could make any significant improvements. Having said that, the modest ducktail on your Cayman does look good. "Good design must be honest" said the good professor (FA Porsche). And I agree. With a base Boxster, I've avoided anything that even hints of upmarket pretensions. No red brake calipers or like "upgrades". I've kept the single exhaust outlet because I like the simplicity. I understand the designers wanted to pay homage to the central exhaust of the 718 RSK.
That’s a hell of a comment! Totally respect your commitment to keep what Porsche designed. As time goes on they become rarer and rarer. That’s what makes the community so good. Variety!
Hi mate the care looks great. But regarding your exhaust in me eyes the two pipes don’t look central to me in the the rear defuser.
You have eagle eyes! I had taken them off to clean them and noticed it watching the footage back. Too late then but have sorted it since. Love your attention to detail though and it’s absolutely how I am as well.
@@Renngineering yes I am very ocd like your self 👍🏻
I've just seen that JCR have done a centre lock conversion on their GT4......sounds great, but then you would need to shell out on the centre lock wheels !
That and you’d need to take a huge breaker bar every where you go 🤣 centre locks look cool but I don’t know what problem they’re solving. Plus I just bought titanium wheel studs/nuts.
Great content! Where is the best place to buy the GTS/Sport Design rear diffuser?
Thanks for the lovely feedback. Not to sound facetious but Porsche! There are options. Design911 where the exhaust is from, or Suncoast in the states. I’ve often found Porsche dealers pretty well priced.
Thanks👍🏻do you know what the part number is? Thanks
Is that authentic Spyder ducktail?
It’s a copy and I took a punt on it but it is excellent quality in fairness. Will talk about it on the next Ep. Thanks for commenting.
Like the Cayman, pleased you flipped the T - but what's with the chippie's claw hammer at 5.16? Typical grad engineer, never worked on the bench 🙄
lol the chippies claw hammer. Correct it was a claw hammer. It was 18 months ago and I’ve absolutely no idea what it was used for but I’m sure I had good reason. Grad engineer no. I’m afraid you’re incorrect on that. Please keep comments polite and respectful.
I stand corrected 👍@@Renngineering
Thank you. Hope you enjoy the content and appreciate you popping back.
love everything what you do
Dude that’s made my day 😃
I tend to agree. Personalisation of a Porsche but staying honest to the car is important to me as well. I’ve never understood why some owners try to imitate models further up the food chain.
Look I get it. To the uninitiated, you might convince a few people that you have a higher model. In reality, that niggle will never really go away that it's a not-quite. You can have fun at any level though. Check out the VW Up episode for example. For me, like you, I'm extremely happy with what I have. If more expensive toys come in the future, it'll be the cherry on the cherry on the cake.
Love the honesty, thank you.
I’m glad it resonated with you!
This is the first video I've seen from you, and I must say I'm very impressed. Thank you for taking us on the trip. The drone footage was stunning and I envy those who have the opportunity to drive following your footsteps. Or should I say Cayman tracks. As a fellow introvert, I marvel at your courage to put your face in front of the camera and speak articulately about issues close to your heart. Much of what you said resonates with me. 👍
Man I live for these comments. I’m going to a podcast episode reading a load out. Amazing…. Thank you for commenting.
Looks lovely on the Spyder wheels. Sadly, not great for the drive. So much wheel and tyre for the 2.7 engine, especially. For actual driving fun, smaller wheels and narrower tyres would increase the feedback and fun levels fairly dramatically. It's tricky, you can't have it both ways. You can have the looks optimised or the drive optimised. It's not an easy call. I've ended up with tiny wheels and tyres on my Cayman S because it's just so much more fun to fling down a good B road - and just more nimble and alive feeling all the time. For looks I'd much rather be on bigger wheels, but they're just so detrimental to the feedback and fun levels. It's not an easy call, but in the end I'v got my Cayman for driving not posing, so small wheels it is.
I don’t disagree with you! You would have to test them all back to back on the same day on the same roads to make it a proper test. Looks are important to me and the car felt great in the alps, so I’m happy with the decision but I hear you.
Nice round up of your plans 👌 look forward to seeing it completed 😀
Thanks Simon for all your support mate.
Hi Paul, Could you give me a link for the KW set ?
It’s the KW HAS kit. To be fair I just scoured the internet for the cheapest price. Prices change so it might not be the same now but I bought my set from ML Performance. I’d hold out for a review during that episode though as it’s mixed.
Thank you@@Renngineering
Car looks great! Can’t wait to see the rest of the videos. Have you thought about changing the sidelights to clear from amber? Thanks for putting out the content. Much appreciated.
I have both. In fact I have three sets. Amber 981 generation. Amber 718 generation. And clear 981. The amber is a styling choice for me to tip the hat to early 911s. I get why in the states you’d frown as everyone does the opposite.
