What size wick did you use?
Great work! Sometimes they do run hot after you rebuild them. Especially the GE's.
Great job all around!
If I ship will you perform the same repairs
@christophersonnier576 Sure! But you always run the risk of the fan getting damaged in shipment. Shoot me an email and we can discuss. Fansofthepast at Gmail.
What a beauty!!!
All three parts of the video where amazing & absolutely love your work on restoring the vintage fans.🎉❤😮👏
@@coltonpreslar3026 Thank you!
Do jeito que você escreve , pensei que eu ia jogar GTA .
Very nice! And I can hear that they’ve defrosted Mariah Carey.
Looks great! These are awesome and durable fans. You're missing the little red center cap for the blades though. Very difficult to find with those still on them.
I've only got ONE Westinghouse that still has the button nose. I'm thinking about super gluing it in there after I restore it! 😉
@@FansOfThePast That's a good idea. i once created a button for one when I was restoring it in one of my videos. I forget what I used but it looked good.
@@floridarusticrepairs If you ever remember what you used, let me know!
Excellent quality video! Only noticed midway through this video how little views it had and how small your channel is. Decent music, just the right mixing and enjoyable camera angles/scenes to see ^^ Keep up the good work!
Much appreciated. Yes, I'm still trying to build up the channel. In the meantime, I'll just keep restoring fans!
This is your best edits yet!! Kudos on not licking the base of fan to find out if asbestos or not. Cannot wait for next episode!
I will let my editing staff know!
I have a similar one out in my garage sitting on top of the fridge.
That is very interesting. I’ve seen a few of these that actually have a heating element up in there as well. Is this made by Kisco?
No, the brand is Air-o-Lamp. Super rare and hard to find, as they were very top heavy and susceptible to falling over and damaging the shroud. I've found several old advertisements for them online.
What idd da your channel about? Only fans?
Yep. I restore antique and vintage fans (and every now and then old lamps and heaters).
I have on of these I'd like to try to restore. How do you tell if the bearings are too worn? Can you get replacement bearings? I love how this sounds like the fan I grew up with. Nice job.
If the bearings are worn, you'll see some up and down play with the rotor shaft (not in and out). If they are worn, you can find some replacement bearings online. You'll have to know way you're looking for. Another option is to buy another fan for parts! If you have any other questions, feel free to email me (this username at gmail).
That gearbox seems to be a pain in the ass to remove.
More so compared to an Emerson or GE!
@@FansOfThePastDefinitely! I just got through taking a 12 A3 apart. It’s basically the predecessor to the fan you were working on in this video. Getting that gearbox off was a lot of pain and a lot of cursing. If you ever get the opportunity to work on a signal cool spot, those are nice to work on as well.
I've got one in the lineup! Soon!
Excellent work and commitment.
Thank you!
Beautiful work on that fan! I think the data plate and badge came out great!
I kinda overboard with the nameplate, but oh well! Thanks!
finally!
Thanks for the before and after shots at the end. Amazing rebuild.
I enjoy watching your videos. They are well paced, and you always add good music.
@DBVintage Thank you for the feedback! Yeah, I'm getting with the pacing. After each video I'm always like "Why would anyone want to watch me turn a Screwdriver for 15 seconds?!?"
That's a beautiful restoration! Nothing beats the black and brass look. Great job!
Nice. I love the Vortalex fans. I've got a WW2 model and it still runs like new.
@floridarusticrepairs Those dang blades are so hard to balance though!
@@FansOfThePast So true! Those heavy steel plates holding the blades do not want to be adjusted.
Absolutely beautiful
Great video. Particularly love the little bit when you said it might have a resistor in the base.
Yeah, I found out later that it was a coil. But I was glad to be wrong! I hate speed resistors!
I appreciate your using the other hand so we, the audience, can observe what you are doing in some of your shots.
@@k.964 Filming while working is a pain.
@@FansOfThePast I bet. But appreciated. Thanks for the video.
That's a cool fan! The pedestal models are hard to come by and have a look all their own.
Found it on Facebook Marketplace for $50!
@@FansOfThePast Wow! I started restoring old fans in the 1990's and these were rare even then.
Yeah, I got lucky!
Hi ive bought a vintage GE vortalex pedestal fan, looks like someone by passed the speed coil, when i have time i will open it and check if its burnt,if it is burnt id like to know if i can wire a speed capacitor in there in order to get the speeds to work again?
@FanofGE Your best bet is to get the exact same speed coil to replace it. I'm actually working on a GE pedestal right now. When I'm done I'll release the video on it. But it was missing the speed coil and I got a replacement from antiquefanparts.com
@@FansOfThePast Ok thank you,i live in South Africa so i think if i order there it would be very expencive for me
Awesome every time you se it 🔄🔃 it's a good feeling 😂
You deserve more subscribers you do a beautiful job on these old fans

Ciao friend. What's your favorite way to polish the blades?
@leahcim38 I use a buffer. One wheel with red jeweler's rouge, and finishing it on the second wheel with white jeweler's compound.
@FansOfThePast very nice looking. I do mine all by hand and finish with premium McGuires polish. I just uploaded a beautiful 1914 Centrury Fan. Check it out I think you'll enjoy it.
I really like the dominion brand fans. Affordable, easily restored and some have those beautiful chrome blades!
Wow. Amazing you were able to media blast the micarta! Good to know.
It was a gamble, but it paid off. I made sure to reduce my air pressure on my regulator.
So I don’t need to mask off the inside and outside? I didn’t realize you could varnish those surfaces. I thought the varnish might affect the magnetic field?
I removed the windings and then varnished them, yes. The varnish provides additional insulation and has negligible effect on the magnetic field. After many years of use, it's good to add more insulation to windings (varnish) that could have had its original insulation worn down over time.
That's a cool one!
this is probaly the greatest youyube intro of all time
Very very nice
All three parts were great. I love watching and learning how everyone does it. I have restored about 25 fans so far with the exception of paint. I like the old look but with good wires and working parts.
Thank you! I think what you're doing is a great thing! Save these works of engineering art from going in the dump. Keep them maintained and they'll last forever!
The GTA III Theme
Yep! My 15 year old editor has been playing the GTA series a lot recently. Can you tell?
Great job
Thank you!
Are the shafts on the motor running on bearings or do they have bronze or copper bushings?
They're more bushings than bearings. As for the material, they appeared to be brass. But I cannot tell you with with absolute certainty.
@@FansOfThePast oil-lite brass bushing with a felt like material to catch the oil in the oil hole at the front and at the back bushing. The bushings can be dismantled to replace the wick like felt material which acts as a reservoir for oil.
Great job! What kind of grease did you use in the oscillator box?
Typical red ball bearing grease. Nothing fancy. I put it in a cake decorating bag to make it easier to get in those small crevices of the gearbox.
Nice to see one of these old industrial fans get some attention. What amazes me about these is that most of them were run in a factory all day, every day for decades with little or no maintenance and yet they're still running.
Exactly! This model was a government spec'd model. Among several differences from the household consumer model, they required the fan to be grounded. It had a 3-prong plug way before codes required a ground prong in the home. What made it even more difficult is that the headwire was 4-conductor because it had an additional conductor for ground.
@@FansOfThePast I guess the color kind of gave it away as government. :) Is this also why there's no badge?
@floridarusticrepairs I guess the government didn't need the excess parts, so as to save the taxpayers' burden. Remember when they used to do that? ;)
@@FansOfThePast lol!
Awesome Work. It looks great. Can I pay you for a decal or can you tell me the process you did.
Hi there! Send me an email to my username at Gmail dot com. (Same as this name). I'm trying to avoid spam emails by posting it directly on here. I can definitely help you out with your badge!
any advise on getting the gearbox screws off? it appears mine will not budge. I have sprayed wd40 and still nothing. Thanks Great Video
Which screws? The larger screws that are horizontally mounted into the motor head? Or the smaller screws that are screwed in vertically? Either way, when screws get to be a bit difficult, I used Liquid Wrench as the first step. Let is soak in for about 10 minutes and try it again. If they still won't budge, I get my heat gun and apply heat to the screws. They usually loosen up that point. But I've never had issues with the gearbox screws before...
I like the color of this one
I love old fans
Beautiful
Hello! I found one of these on the side of the road yesterday, and for some reason, I decided I needed it. I've always wanted to restore things. Well I got it all put back together after cleaning and painting bit I think the capacitor blew. Where do you get yours? I searched online and can't see. To locate one like it. Please help!
Hi! You will need a capacitor with the following rating: 1.75µF 250VAC I found some on Amazon, but I can't seem to find that exact rating on there anymore. But I helped someone find more by doing a Google search. Let me know if you need further help!
