PTO Link® How to Measure Driveline to Determine if Shortening is Needed updated 1 25 2024
Below are the Instructions on How to Measure, to determine whether to shorten an implement driveline when installing the PTO Link® Quick Connect System. (See below for options, exceptions & video timecode)
Many of our PTO Link® customers do NOT need to shorten their driveline to accommodate the 4.5 to 5 inches added by PTO Link®. However, everyone should verify whether this is necessary by first evaluating and comparing the following measurements (a) and (b):
(a) Before installing PTO Link® and when the implement is fully connected to your tractor AND is sitting on level ground, measure the maximum distance the implement driveline slides in during a hydraulic lift* and after it has been lowered back to the ground, then ADD 1 inch to that measurement;
(b) Install each PTO Link® coupler to the tractor and implement, but do NOT connect the couplers. Then measure the distance between the two installed PTO Link® couplers (make sure they are facing square to each other and at the same height) when the driveline is fully collapsed (bottomed out toward the gearbox).
(b - 2nd option) If you don’t have the PTO Link® couplers yet, you can estimate (measurement-b) by simulating the length added by the PTO Link®, by measuring the distance between the tip of the tractor PTO male spline and the tip of the Implement female receiver (make sure they are facing square to each other and at the same height) when the driveline is fully collapsed (bottomed out), then SUBTRACT 3 inches. [This will be your estimated (b) measurement, if the PTO Link® was installed]. Note: this measurement is for estimation purposes only. The most accurate measurement (when determining whether to cut the driveline) is best measured once the PTO Link® is fully installed.
Take the above measurements and compare the following:
1. If (a) is less than or equal to (b), then no adjustment is necessary.
2. If (a) is greater than (b), then the difference [(a) minus (b)] is the recommended amount to shorten the driveline.
OPTIONS: Of course, a helpful alternative to shorten the driveline is to install a quick-hitch system to your 3 point hitch (e.g., Pat’s Easy Change, iMatch, etc.) which lengthens the distance between your tractor and implement and tends to offset most** of the PTO driveline length added by PTO Link®.
*EXCEPTIONS: With some smaller tractors (when using a tiller) the driveline will actually collapse further when being lowered ‘into the ground’ (from ground level). Therefore, pay special attention to how your driveline slides during use to avoid incorrect measuring when confirming if driveline slide is adequate. NOTE: For tractor Post Hole Diggers / Auger implements, see (F.A.Q. #6) for special instructions.
**REMEMBER, if your 3 point quick hitch was installed by the dealer at the time of purchase of the tractor, 3 point quick hitch and implement, then the driveline will likely not have been cut down as much since the 3 point quick hitch was used as part of the final measuring evaluation.
If you have any questions, need additional guidance or curious as to how easy adjusting (cutting) the driveline is (see FAQ #1 - last video), or feel free to call our Customer Care Hotline at: 833-444-5465, ext 3.

    I recently bought this for an 8 foot finish mower, but honestly the only advantages it makes it easier to get into my PTO but I cannot unhook it the way it’s meant to be unhooked because I can’t spin the 8 foot finish mower with five blades so I keep the male and female plates together and just put it on the traditional way. So what I paid for is an expensive extension to my PTO.

      Hi Scott... please give me a call at 833.444.5465 ext 3, for some helpful tips on connecting the system when you have an implement that doesn't rotate very well. If your tractor will "freewheel" you can also take advantage of rotating the tractor's PTO (using the clean plate installed) to make the connection and disconnection. We agree, this should be WAY MORE beneficial than used as "an expensive extension". Give us a call, so we can suggest some ways to make this work as intended!

    So three steps instead of two... Grew up on a farm and if you use this you aren't a farmer. Original pto is a sliding collar and slide the shaft on. No rotating or extra locking pins. If you can't slide your shaft or collar you need to clean and grease your equipment. I only see this as a crutch for unmaintained equipment.

      Greg, I'm glad you are having no difficulty in connecting you PTO driven implements...hopefully that doesn't change as you get older. For the rest of us (who struggle for various reasons) it's a necessity (based on the 1000's of happy customers we have). For me personally, it's the painful arthritis in my hands that make it nearly impossible to hook up without the PTO Link.

    I like the fact that it makes hooking up a PTO driven implement easier and quicker. For those of us that use a Quick Hitch out back, you know what little room you have to move around trying to connect a PTO implement. AND, the fact that the pieces can be easily transfered to other tractors and PTO implements. As long as they are 6 spline. Great piece of equipment for a liftetime of use.

    I’m curious… Is the ONLY difference between the red and blue models is how heavy-duty they are? For example, if I currently have a 31HP tractor, but I plan on upgrading to a 60-some horsepower model, can I use the the blue link now? Thanks.

    • @PTOLink
      @PTOLink ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's correct. The HD is recommended for larger implement sizes (8 feet wide or more) and for the tractors that are larger, up to 130 HP. There is some metal upgrade for the HD as well. Call if you have more questions...we are happy to help!

    • @joeyw4442
      @joeyw4442 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spend the little extra and get the HD(blue). That'll just about cover you for whatever HP tractor and implement size you want to run in the future. Easily transfered from one tractor to another and most PTO implements. No tools required for install or removal so quick and easy to move from one piece of equipment to another.

      You have a great point... In fact I've had some tractor owners say they may have to sell their farm because of the real struggle to connect their PTO using the old way (designed about a 100 years ago)...especially if they are having arthritis or back issues. We say, maybe it's time to upgrade your PTO connection options and do it a much easier way with the PTO Link! We are honored to help those folks stay doing what they love or have to do!!

    • @samjones778
      @samjones778 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PTOLink may you please explain how this is going to help back paint and arthritis? From what I could see you spend more time bent over and mucking around and then you loose your coupling or pin in the grass then you really would want to sell the farm because your back is stuffed and you have no money left from buying items like this that serve no purpose to the farm or the farmer. Why?

    • @PTOLink
      @PTOLink ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samjones778 , Great question: Because of the open-faced, interlocking plate design, we make the connection process quicker, meaning less leaning and holding the heavy driveline up (back strain) and trying to connect the implement at the PTO (rotating to align the tight 540rpm spline with 6 teeth, ever so precisely, while pushing and pulling collars/pin to slide/bang it forward until it clicks in place, etc.) And, if you have arthritis in hands like me…it’s next to impossible. Once you quickly install the 2 plates (which only takes seconds) you simply place 2 of the 4 studs inside the large tear drop openings (no precision needed), press the plates together (aligning the other studs) and then giving a little twist (about 1/2”) which allows the Locking pin to fall into the hole without even touching it. Then insert the Grade 8 Safety Bolt through both plates to do the final locking (like a “dead bolt” - that protects the system in the case of reverse torque). To uninstall, remove the Safety bolt (push out from end), then pull the Locking pin out and give a little twist, using the freewheel option of either tractor or implement, to disconnect. Place pin back in the implement plate hole for safe keeping. As for the cost… do you really want to put a cheaply made piece of anything on the back of that expensive tractor, implement and driveline? Not me. It’s built tough…which ain’t cheap to do. ;)
