Do you remember the first TED talk you ever watched?
Was it a random clip shared on social media?
Did someone tell you to go check it out?
Do you remember your first impression?
Did you think it was a load of stuffy nonsense, or did it inspire you that you wanted to have an idea worth sharing from that red circle?
I place my dinner down on the desk in my student room (chicken and noodle stir fry, classic student meal!).
My classmate has told me as we walked back to halls that evening that I should check out TED talks.
What my classmate doesn't know, and no one knows at that time, is that I am struggling with depression, and I'm finding it difficult sitting in that student room by myself through the dark, cold Scottish winter of 2012.
Every day I'm looking for that little chink of light to try and lift me out of my slump.
When I go to TED.com, I'm swamped by options, so I filer through the options in the only way that makes sense to me.
I go to the most viewed video, that should be the best one right?
That was the 2006 talk by Sir Ken Robinson, "Do schools kill creativity".
For those 18 minutes, Ken brought a little chink of light into my dark student room.
There's a reason it was, and still is, the most watched TED talk of all time.
Twelve years later, I'm delighted to come back full circle and look at it as a speaker and TEDx coach and break down why it's such an impactful speech.
What I particularly love about it is that Robinson actually breaks a number of "rules" that people believe are necessary to be an effective public speaker.
I always use this speech as an example to clients who are worried they don't "fit the mold" of what they believe is expected of them as a speaker.
To find out how Ken's speech successfully breaks the rules, watch this video.
