Remember, the Lord is Merciful - A Glenn Rawson Story

Remember, The Lord Is Merciful
This is a story about the tender and abundant mercies of the Lord, notwithstanding our mistakes-sometimes serious.
In April 1828, Martin Harris came from Palmyra New York to Harmony Pennsylvania to assist the Prophet Joseph Smith in the translation of the Book of Mormon. By June 14, 1828, the two of them had translated what Joseph referred to as the “Book of Lehi.” There was a considerable volume of pages completed.
At that time the work of translation stopped, perhaps because Emma was due to deliver a baby. Martin had pleaded with Joseph to be able to take the manuscript and show it to members of his family. Twice the Lord had said no, but with the third request, Joseph said, “the Lord said unto me, ‘let him go with them only he shall covenant with me that he will not shew them to only but four persons.’” Martin left for Palmyra and on June 15, 1828, Emma had gone into labor, but the child was either stillborn or did not live long. Emma’s life hung in the balance and Joseph tended her day and night.
Three weeks later, Martin had not returned and Emma encouraged Joseph to go to Manchester “for the purpose of learning the cause of Mr. Harris’s absence, as well as silence.” Joseph made that journey and upon arrival learned from Martin Harris that the manuscript was gone. It had been stolen. Mother Smith recorded that “sobs and groans…filled the house,” and that Joseph was “weeping and grieving like a tender infant.”
Joseph returned to Harmony, parting from his family “with heavy hearts.” “Immediately after my return home,” Joseph said, “I was walking out a little distance, when behold, the former heavenly messenger appeared and handed to me the Urim and Thummim again (for it had been taken from me in consequence of my having wearied the Lord in asking for the privilege of letting Martin Harris take the writings which he lost by transgression) and I enquired of the Lord through them and obtained the following revelation.”
That revelation is known today as Doctrine and Covenants 3. In it the Lord speaks directly to Joseph saying:
"Behold, you have been entrusted with these things, but how strict were your commandments; and remember also the promises which were made to you, if you did not transgress them. And behold, how oft you have transgressed the commandments and the laws of God, and have gone on in the persuasions of men. For, behold, you should not have afeared man more than God. Although men set at naught the counsels of God, and despise his words- Yet you should have been faithful; and he would have extended his arm and supported you against all the fiery darts of the adversary; and he would have been with you in every time of trouble. Behold, thou art Joseph, and thou wast chosen to do the work of the Lord, but because of transgression, if thou art not aware thou wilt fall."
Can we even imagine the depth of sorrow that Joseph felt at such a rebuke, and that, coupled with the death of his son and near death of his wife. It had to have been a dark and difficult time for Joseph. Yet, the Lord extended the arms of mercy. He said:
"But remember, God is merciful; therefore, repent of that which thou hast done which is contrary to the commandment which I gave you, and thou art still chosen, and art again called to the work."
Joseph did repent and according to Mother Smith, the plates and interpreters were restored on September 22, 1828.
There are at least two takeaways from this story. The first may be that if Joseph was a fraud foisting an elaborate lie to gratify his own ego, would he have included such a chronicle of his mistake? And the second, is that notwithstanding his mistake in losing an entire ancient record of scripture, repentance was still possible, mercy was extended, and hope was born anew.
If so for Joseph in his mistakes then, surely so for us now.

Hello, my name is Kyle Renneberg in all technicality my last name is actually not blood to me my last name should technically be Rawson since my grandmother was not married to the person that we do not know who is supposedly my "grandfather" My last name was actually belong to her second husband who was dead before my father was born so it's almost impossible to be my grandfather... With that being said I traced my grandmother Agnes's family all the way back to Edward Rawson Edward Rawson Secretary of the Massachusetts Bay Colony Are you part of his family too??

I watched your video series about the Joseph Smith Papers several years ago while I recovered for 10 days from a nasty virus. They were so well done and helped me so much. Thank you!
I needed to hear that, not a story but as a reality that with Trust and Faith in Prayer to God through Christ, I too can be strengthened through my challenges . Thank you
Thanks Glenn
Thank you so much Brother Rawson !
If Joseph saw God and Jesus, and the first vision cleared the confusion on the Godhead, why did Joseph teach God and Jesus were one, that God was a spirit and Jesus was a body, in Lectures on Faith, February, 1835?
Thank you Glenn
The Scriptures warn us of things about our Church leaders we can't see, Preface… concerning the Twelve Apostles of the Lamb...(D&C 112) Behold, vengeance cometh speedily upon the inhabitants of the earth... And upon my house shall it begin... First among those among you...who have professed to know my name and have not known me, and have blasphemed against me in the midst of my house...(D&C 112:24-26) The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail. For the leaders of this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed. (Isaiah 9:15-16) Let no man deceive you by any means...that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition... Who opposeth God...sitteth in the temple of God...(2 Thessalonians 2:3-4) ...until he be taken out of the way. (2 Thessalonians 2:7) While that man, who was called of God and appointed...shall fall by the shaft of death, like as a tree that is smitten by the vivid shaft of lightning. (D&C 85:8) Never in the Bible or any Mormon Scripture does a prophet, apostle or prophetess say, “I promise.” For to do so would make themselves instead of God. Promises are only made by God Himself never by man throughout all Scripture except, Nehemiah 5:23 and Joshua 9:21, where man made a promise for a negative outcome. Beware of promises made by man saying, “I promise” in behalf of the God of Jacob, the Scriptures warn us. And marrying the dead in temples? Where does God say to marry the dead? God never told us to marry the dead only to baptize for the dead. And God warns us to do according to that which is written marrying the dead is not written. (D&C 84:57) (D&C 24:14) (D&C 84:57) And when we follow man and not God look around at the results: We're fighting over public bathrooms and which gender can play sports marriage is different, etc., etc. Why are we administered the Sacrament in a manner that’s against God’s command? (D&C 20:40,46,58,76) (Moroni 4:1) And we wonder why there’s depression, suicide and other heinous events among us. ...the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation...(2 Timothy 3:15) If ye love me, keep my commandments. (John 14:15)
I watch "History of the Saints" every time it airs on Sundays on KSL. A few years ago I was trying to drive a bull out of a field that had got into the cows a couple of weeks early. As I chased him on my 4 wheel atv the bull suddenly bolted off the road and down an embankment towards the gulch stream. I could not stop and went off the embankment and tipped head over heals. The atv landed on top of me. It took sometime to overcome the numbness and pain to get the atv off of me and limp a 1/3 mile back to my pickup and drive myself to the ER.
Thank you my brother. You and I came unwillingly at first with plenty of reasons not to come at all. I've been preserved to raise my last remaining son. Months until mission time and he is denying what he felt in the Sacred Grove! My soul is full of anguish, ironically we read 1Ne 17:47 tonight and now know He knows how we feel. We love your work. Thank you for filling our date nights with faith in Christ, laughter, and a few years. Love you brother.
Thank you for these wonderfulstories , they are very inspiring.
How did your bike fare? Such a beautiful, insightful story. You saying that we need to be wise in who or what we place our faith in. That we need to place our faith in things as far as they are capable of delivering. Such wise counsel!
Thank you for making this available on TH-cam. I love these firesides and have been listening to you for years now!
Just I thought; the different accounts don't conflict but reflect the audience at that moment and Joseph's mood. As a missionary in the mid-late 70's, when teaching the First Vision, the Holy Ghost would confirm to me of its truthfulness and continues to this day.
Joseph Smith. An obvious true prophet.
I am so grateful for my testimony of the truthfulness of Joseph smiths story. I even wrote a song called the Joseph Smith Story. I went to the Lord and I received the truth about it. It was such an overwhelming experience. I will never forget it and where I was and how it felt. Thank you Joseph Smith and also Glenn Rawson for the great work you put in to these stories and present them to us which helps us increase our knowledge and testimony of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day-Saints.
Wow! this is one of your very best videos. Thank you for your dedication and willingness to help us every week to come closer to Jesus Christ.
