The Merge: Episode 03 | Nassim Taleb | The architecture of the world we inhabit.
When Dr. Nassim Nicholas Taleb looks to the future, he doesn’t see the randomness of a roll of the dice, but a hidden order shaped by probability distributions and rooted in history. For him, randomness itself is epistemic-grounded in knowledge and the deep, unbroken threads that connect us to our past.
The Merge is a production of the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Architecture at AUB. The podcast was recorded at the studios of the Abdulla Al Ghurair Hub for Digital Teaching & Learning at MSFEA. Special thanks to our team Karen Kelaita, Rima Ghannoum, Christina Sleiman, Mariam Noureddine, Kassem Zaayter, and Dana Ghalayini for recording, editing, and production.

This project is totally unnecessary. Mar mkhayel is much better than other areas of beirut when it comes to infrastructure and public spaces and the general environment. There are other areas in beirut that are much more dense, sub-developed and in need of investment. There are also many concerns such as air pollution, in a city of the size of beirut, there is no measure of air quality, or basic control of sound pollution, or since we're talking about the recovery from the blast, there is the investigation into Aug 4 itself which could use some support. And if you want to improve walkability, add a pedestrian safe common areas then there is another way which is much cheaper and faster, which many have been demanding for years and which is implemented all across the world in many cities. Sadly this is subject to siloed thinking where different areas of beirut are like independant and opaque bubbles, and an excess of investment goes into areas which are already excessively developed and used as a facade when other areas are terrifyingly destitute and neglected. It is also subject to interest of the corrupt; some persons made millions off this superfluous failed project for sure which could have invested in much better ways.

NOW IS THE TIME, Instead of big tech multi-billionaires paying more taxes. The government should coordinate with Big tech and develop algorithms to create a universal base income (UBI) based on the use of OUR DATA (the world's greatest commodity) and establish a fair valuation that would compensate us the consumers with rewards, credits, tokens or plain dollars for the use of it by big tech permanent development of marketing strategies that so far only generate billions of dollars for big tech monopolies. Currently, we get nothing in return but sophisticated scientific personalized advertising inciting us to keep consuming only to enlarge the already obscene multi-billion big tech pockets without any financial benefit for the other 98% owners of our data.
