Heath LNB-4 - is a Champ
มุมมอง 159ปีที่แล้ว
Resurrecting a HobbyZone Champ into a StevensAero LNB-4. A fun little project to work on while it rained. I did have to get my magnifying glass out more than once on this project. This kit is detailed yet very small and very light. At the end of the day, it flies nicely as long as there isn't any wind.

A summer project to move the electronics from a Hobby Zone Sport Cub S2 to a Stevens Aero Heath LNB-4. After watching (and subscribing) to Tim McKay's TH-cam videos, I wanted to try out a Stevens Aero plane of my own. OSMW Robinhood 25 - Wrap up
มุมมอง 436ปีที่แล้ว
Had the first flight last weekend without any major issue. Landing was a bit of a good suprise. Mike - I took your suggestion and put on some better weeks which worked nicely. The prop may have too much bite which may be causing the large amp draw range, not sure, now that the first flight is over I can start tinkering and start thinking about what's next. Sorry no in-flight video, next time.

I setup a new plane in my transmitter and bound the receiver, made sure the motor is spinning the right direction, and that all the control surfaces are moving in the right direction. Then I ran up the driveway and back. Here's what's left before the first flight: - Some OSMW decals - I said in the video I wanted to toe the wheels but I want some positive camber - I may change the wheels - fix ...

    Thank you so much! I hate to put a rudder on my own rc planes. The weight of the extra servo, the control linkage, and the linkage stopper are more than I wanted. With differential thrust the complexity and weight are unnecessary. I just got it working, and tomorrow I hope to fly it for the first time.

    I'm working on building this plane now. The fuselage and tail went together nicely, but the wing will challenge your building skills. The tab and notch construction means you need to have plenty of rubber bands and clamps to fit some of the pieces together simultaneously.

    built the 8 foot model, it had a G 38 originally then upgraded to a G 45 and that was the game changer. Had that plane for 14 years until I retired it and it had over a 1000 flights. So reliable. Had a Futaba radio and several huge servo's. So much fun!!! Its a shame to see the hobby fall into its present state, no building or designing but have those awful plastic-foam ARF's that are so dang ugly. The best years are truly in RC behind us!!!!!

    What do you think of this model, did you like building it ?

    • @jmacrcbuilds1103
      @jmacrcbuilds1103 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did. The laser cutting was all really well done, so the model almost snapped together. I took my time building it but this could be completed very quickly if you wanted to. The end product looks sharp and flies very well. I did need a little weight in the nose to balance the plane, but not an outrageous amount. It's a little boxy in design, but that cuts down on balsa shaping and sanding. There is a larger version of this same plane. The only mod I did to the plane was to add gussets to the tail frame for added strength. (probably where my balance issue came from)

    After a closer look at what came in the package, I found the wood was backed by a piece of cardboard. This is a micro airplane with a 22" wingspan (67 square in) and should come in way less than the weight on the scale in this video. The packaging says the flying weight is about 37g.

I have the wings about 90%, I'm adding adding ailerons and making it a flat wing instead of the 6" dihedral the plan calls for. Also I'm making the wing in two parts so it will fit in my car. I haven't figure out exactly what that's going to look like. I'm going to start the fusalage so I can see where the wing will attach, that will help decide how to attach that. I guess it's time for another video, lol.

    Thanks for posting this. I've built two of these during covid with the help of a friend on the covering. I'm yet to maiden them but hope to do so soon. I have a C3548 1100kv motor on 4s. With a 11X5.5 prop it is producing over 900 watts at 60-70 amps held still on the ground. In the air it won't use that many amps but I'll test it with a 10X6 prop asap I get one so I can compare the two props. I've made mine a tail-dragger and also mounted the motor on metal standouts to let (I hope) a bit more air into the fuse for cooling.

      I put in as much control throw as I can then dial it down with the dual rates on the transmitter. That way if it's not enough on the DR I can switch to full throw. I'm a pretty new flier though so for flying in circles 50% throw is usually good enough for me..

    That’s a good question 🤔. The other question about these hatches is why is there only overkill fixing at one end nothing at the other end? I see you’ve done the same as I’m about todo and fix them with a couple of wood screws, great minds and all that.😅 The only thing I can think for these hatches is 🤔, if you fit an glow motor & fuel system then the receiver battery could go into one. Hi JMac, you and I are just starting out on the same project. Ill be interested to see how you get on, & if we run into the same issues. The first thing is the canopy mine was just the same, very thin and distorted on one side. Your motor the 2817 motor looks small to spin a 11x7 prop so I would like to know how you get on with it when you get there. I’ve have the kit & the extras separately from my local supplier, I will be using a 3547 - 800 kv with 12x7 on 4S. This my second DW kit I’m building for a review & except for the manual the first one went together and flew very nicely, so I’m hoping this one is the same.

    • @jmacrcbuilds1103
      @jmacrcbuilds1103 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Roy, This is my second DW as well, though I haven't started it yet. My first was the Sunbird2 which has a very small motor as well. On that kit there weren't any instructions for mounting the motor and it didn't fit very well in the space they provided. I ended up replacing it with a different motor that mounted on the outside rather than inside the model. This motor does look small and running with a 3S Lipo off a hard surface might be ok, with trainer performance, I would expect that a grass field or better performance I'll be replacing this motor as well. I'm excited to start the model and I expect it to build quickly, the DW parts seem to fit together nicely but the instructions are pretty sparse, you have to think through and trial fit some of the parts before you glue them.

    • @jmacrcbuilds1103
      @jmacrcbuilds1103 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also I'm surprised there aren't very many videos about the T30, not much information about it at all.

    • @jmacrcbuilds1103
      @jmacrcbuilds1103 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I took a more in-depth look at the kit and a couple of things stand out. 1. - there isn't any plan, the parts all fit together and there isn't any plan drawing or instruction text to built against, just the instruction pictures. 2. - it's very light, the wood used is very thin. I suspect the wing loading is going to be very light.

    • @RTatBstoke
      @RTatBstoke 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply. This is my second DWH kit build, Ive done the Cloud Dancer for a mag review out early next year. That kit has many similarities to this one, the main one being the lack of build detail in the manual. The thing’s I don’t get are, why the small box? Like this one the spars & all span wise parts come in 2 parts. That save 100mm on the box! The other is the lack of setup for radio, motor or controls movements. This seems to be a theme across all their kits. The savings factor is it does fly very nicely once shorted, and has a very light wing loading, I’m hoping the same for T30.

    • @jmacrcbuilds1103
      @jmacrcbuilds1103 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RTatBstoke The two part spans are strange, I wonder if their production equipment or laser cutter has a limitation in the length of material it can handle? I know DW makes puzzles and other kits. I'm finding this kit is more like putting together a puzzle than building an airplane. Many of the parts like F20 can fit upside down, but one side tab is a little larger than the other so there is a "best fit" but no instruction to say so. Also as soon as I opened the sealed bag of wood most of it start to twist and warp. I'm sure there is a difference in humidity between where it was packaged and New Hampshire, USA. It's becoming a challenge to keep straight lines during the assembly. However, I'm enjoying putting it together and assembly is very quick.
