How the U.S. Built Soviet Industry—and Got Nothing in Return | The $175 Billion Debt
The relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union is often remembered for its Cold War tensions, nuclear standoffs, and ideological divides. However, one of the most fascinating, albeit lesser-known, chapters of their history lies in their cooperation during critical moments of the 20th century. Despite their contrasting political systems and the deep ideological divide, both nations managed to collaborate in ways that had a profound impact on the course of global events. This cooperation, particularly during the industrialization of the Soviet Union and World War II, shows how national interests can transcend ideological differences, offering valuable lessons in diplomacy, pragmatism, and resilience.
Soviet Industrialization and American Assistance
The first significant instance of U.S.-Soviet cooperation occurred in the early 20th century, when the Soviet Union embarked on its ambitious industrialization program. In its quest to modernize, the Soviet Union turned to the United States for technological expertise. Despite the stark contrast in their political ideologies-capitalist America and socialist Russia-American companies like Ford Motor Company and General Electric played key roles in building Soviet infrastructure. These American companies provided both machinery and managerial expertise that helped lay the foundation for Soviet industry.
For example, the Gorky Automobile Plant in Russia, which produced the GAZ series of cars, was designed with American automotive technology and guidance. Similarly, the Dnieper Hydroelectric Power Plant, one of the largest in Europe at the time, was constructed with American assistance. This collaboration was not limited to machinery; it also extended to management philosophies, with principles from Frederick W. Taylor's scientific management method influencing Soviet production lines. It’s remarkable that capitalist tools and strategies were utilized to build the infrastructure of socialism, demonstrating how pragmatism can outweigh ideology when national survival and progress are at stake.
The question remains: Who benefited more from this collaboration-the capitalist West or the socialist East? The answer is complex. While the Soviet Union gained valuable industrial capabilities, the United States also benefitted from expanding its influence in the Soviet sphere and securing important trade relations. Moreover, the Soviet Union’s industrialization played a significant role in its military buildup, which would prove crucial during World War II.
World War II and the Lend-Lease Program
The most significant and dramatic example of U.S.-Soviet cooperation came during World War II. When Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa in 1941 and invaded the Soviet Union, the U.S. found itself in a precarious position. While the United States and the Soviet Union had deep ideological differences, both recognized the threat posed by Nazi Germany, and this common enemy led to a temporary yet crucial alliance.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt initiated the Lend-Lease program in 1941 to provide military aid to the Soviet Union. Under this program, the United States shipped massive quantities of military supplies to the Soviet Union, which included tanks, aircraft, trucks, food, and ammunition. The Lend-Lease program was instrumental in bolstering the Soviet Union’s ability to defend itself and ultimately helped turn the tide of the war. Nearly 4,000 M4 Sherman tanks, thousands of Bell P-39 Airacobra aircraft, and a significant number of trucks and armored vehicles were provided to the Soviet forces. These contributions played a pivotal role in enabling the Soviets to fight effectively on the Eastern Front, even as the Nazi forces advanced deep into Soviet territory.
Beyond military hardware, the Lend-Lease program also supplied the Soviet Union with vital food and raw materials. These shipments ensured the survival of both the Soviet military and civilian population, helping to maintain the Soviet war machine. The United States thus played an indirect yet crucial role in the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany, reinforcing the idea that, in times of dire need, adversaries can become allies.
The Fragility of the Alliance
While the alliance between the United States and the Soviet Union was instrumental in defeating Nazi Germany, it was always fragile. The tensions that had been simmering between the two nations throughout the 1930s resurfaced after the war. With the defeat of Germany, the geopolitical landscape shifted, and both superpowers began to vie for global dominance. The ideological differences between the capitalist West and the socialist East became more pronounced, setting the stage for the Cold War.

No… it was Navajo. A real Navajo speaker could read and understand the words. It was called Navajo Code because they took words from the language to represent military and tactical terms that didn’t exist in Navajo. Only Navajo Code Talkers who were trained on what those words meant in code would understand it. That’s why when the Japanese captured the POW, he couldn’t make sense of any of the transmissions. Yes, He could read it fine. But it was nonsensical because he didn’t understand the code within the language, because he was never taught it. Example: “The enemy Mexican has many turtles and sitting guns going ahead” Translation: The Enemy Company has a lot of tanks and mortars advancing” Unless you knew Mexican meant Company sized element, or Turtle meant tank, or Sitting Gun meant mortars… doesn’t matter if you speak the language fluently.

I do not know how much of what is presented is accurate. But much of what is presented is relevant in current Arab societies and culture when compared to the US. The nature of the military is inherently secretive. With higher ranking commanders withholding information from lower ranking personnel. The problem maybe exaggerated when compared with developed countries like the United States. Arab societies are trapped in the distant past, and many societies like Saudi Arabia still have a King. Saudi Arabia is a feudal society. Commoners are suppose to sacrifice their lives for the King and feudal lords. It is an honor to die for your King. All Middle Eastern societies still function at this level. Including Middle Eastern countries that call themselves "republics." It is like Communist China where the Chinese Communist Party has secured the absolute power of the emperor for themselves. "The Rule of Law" does not exist. Whatever the Chinese Communist Politburo declares that is the law. "The Arbitrary Rule of Man" governs these countries. When it comes to military hardware it is difficult to criticize countries like the Arab states or Communist China. These countries are pre-industrial societies. They cannot make modern military hardware. They buy modern military hardware from developed countries like the former Soviet Union, the US, or France. The US will not sell US military hardware to Communist China and most Middle Eastern states (Arab or Persian). Therefore they buy weapons from the former Soviet Union. I cannot explain why the US will sell second-hand weapons to the Saudis. Modern military hardware is a precious commodity to these pre-industrial and indeed medieval people. They have a limited supply. When it is used up they cannot make more. Their society, their people, cannot make and therefore cannot repair malfunctioning modern military hardware. They can only buy more. Assuming it is for sale. When it comes to Arabs being suspicious of US officials conspiring with Israel it is difficult to refute Arab-Persian suspicions. In all major conflicts between Arabs or Persians with Israel the US have always sided with Israel. The Israeli military is armed with the latest US made weapons. Additionally in the US and the UK free speech is both legally and culturally protected. Yet Israel is shielded from any criticism. When Jeremy Corbyn criticizes Israel is he immediately attacked in the press and he is dismissed from political participation by his own political party. Corbyn can criticize the UK (his own government) and the US with no repercussion. But if he criticizes Israel he is a pariah, a NAZI, or a terrorist. In the US no serious politician dare criticize Israel, because their political career would end immediately. Why do Middle Easterners think US officials collaborate with Israel? To support Israel the developed countries of Western Civilization will trash their own legal and cultural heritage, respect for free speech, in support of Israel. On this issue, Middle Easterners are correct.

This article is an example of watching the trees while ignoring the forest: The Arab mentality when it comes to wars is they literally are willing to wait decades and centuries if need be to win a war, especially in the modern era (the former Soviet Union in Afghanistan, the U.S. most recently). It's probably an even wiser mindset in the modern era since the more powerful countries use modern weapons platforms that are extremely costly to maintain, especially as an occupying force.
