just in case i forget tomorrow, while out collecting dead wood (if it is not raining), happy new year, Sara! And I think PTG Tours has now accepted my itinerary ready for the tour in Japan (Ibaraki main focus) next autumn. 8 days for the main tour, with an add-on optional visit to Aogashima at the end.Counting the days before returning to sanity . . . clean, punctual trains, good food, excellent hotels, lovely scenery and wonderful people.
Looks great fun!
Thanks for supporting my music again Sara ☺ 200 hours of video is a lot to go through!
久しぶりに聞いたけどいい曲😢
ありがとう🥲🥲
Thanks so much for supporting me and using my song 'Weigh Down' Sara! Looks like a good day in Paris. What was your favourite part?
Sorry Sara, I meant THANK you. So much for small keys on USB keyboards. (`tanken' in German is 'to fill a car with petrol.' I would not submit you to such torture . . . . Equally, in German, a 'Handy' is a mobile phone. Fascinating language.
Tank you Sara! Would love to have you and your father for company on tomorrow's walk! I will of course send you some photos later in the week . . .
OMG SARA UR SO CUTE I LOVE THIS VLOG 😍😍😍
ERRRIIIIN THANKYOU FOR WATCHING MEANS THE WORLD TO ME❤️❤️
お父様男前!
Absolutely super video, sara. Will comment later. (and i have NOT forgotten to compile that set of photos of St. Malo). it has been a busy couple of weeks since my internet connection was repaired (just ONE faulty piece of wire opposite the house . . .) and on Monday i am making protest walk to Ribadesella for my fourth Covid vaccination. Sounds strange? Again, i will explain later! Take care - we are not through the pandemic yet. Medical advice for Covid protection - think positively, be happy!
Hello Sara, Two weeks without internet in the house. Although in Infiesto library the WiFi is much faster, the working environment is not like home. I must now return for lunch. Spain is a disaster country. Will try to keep you informed . . .
Cambridge is, in some was, and still is, a bit strange and snobbish. The main social distinction is between 'town' and 'gown'. One university rule, to be fulfilled as part of the three-part exam system or Tripos (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tripos), is that you must spend the nights of at least eight weeks in term within three miles of a church in the city centre. In the geography department, lectures were mostly in the morning, you were given a reading list, and spent the rest of the day making notes in the library. No internet, of course. Certain references were on 'restricted' lists. This was because they contained Socialist or other left-wing content. In those days, controversial. In other words, the uni had a record of who was reading what. And could pass it on to a future employer! Tutorials took place with either a senior member of staff or a graduate student, about once a week. I found these rather a waste of time (apologies to those concerned if by chance you read this). Books are a better source of reference. Your tutor set you essays to research and write.Fine. Exams took place once a year, in June, over a three-day period. These were essentially three-hour memory tests, involving the writing of three essays. Grading was based on an obscure 1.1, 1.2, 2.21, 2.2 and 3 system, which I fail to comprehend. by the time i wasin my final year, i had made up my mind what to do next. I was slightly involved, while writing my undergraduate dissertation, with the University of East Anglia, which was investigating the problems of mobility in rural areas. At that time car ownership was inexorably increasing, and rural bus services were being, equally inexorably, withdrawn. So now let us xplore the basics of time and space mobility: As you, Tam and Sara, both know, I live in a dying Spanish village, Borines. If, as was the case last spring, I have to rely on public transport, I have a few options available. One is the Monday morning market bus to Infiesto. Out at either 07.30 or 10.00, back at 13.30. In theory this also gives me tie to catch another bus, to Arriondas and back, to do shopping. The other is the Thursday morning market bus to Colunga (Tam, Jorge's 'high speed bus' ...hahaha). Out at 09.45, back at 13.00 from Colunga. In theory I could catch a connecting bus to Lastres and back in the interim. So, bsd on that, my time-space sphere using buses alone extends from Borines to Arriondas and Borines to Lastres, on two days per week. But, do the times at which these buses run allow sufficient time for issues like an appointment with a bank manger (preferably not), or at the health centre for an 'analysis' (No thank you . . _? Possibly not. In the 1970s in Britain many facilities, such as shops, had very rigid, inflexible opening hours (and lunchtime closing). Public transport timetables were not always convenient for these. So at the UEA in Norwich they started investigating access to facilities, to see how public transport operators might improve their offers. In some ways, the research was ahead of its time. Sara, try to Google 'Mobility as a Service, Japan', and see what you come up with. Japan is making advances in this field, providing online 'mobility packages'. Spain is trying to do similar, with Doco, which was launched a couple of weeks ago by RENFE. To get back to where I was. THaks to my connections with UEA, I decided to aim for an MSc (followed by a PhD) at the Centre for Transport Studies at wht is nowadays the University of Cranfield (www.cranfield.ac.uk/). CTS no longer exists, absorbed in the Management School. Tam, I know you will like this link (and guess you will find it interesting, too, Sara) - the research looks fascinating (www.cranfield.ac.uk/case-studies/research-case-studies/spatial-disorientation-and-expectation). Cranfield was quite different to Cambridge. Apart from being rural (an old Royal Air Force aerodrome, with associated facilities), it was 100%+ international, and i had many friends there from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, the Middle East, Africa, India and Sri Lanka. My neighbour, Mrs Li Dali, came from Beijing (on of the first postgrads from mainland China to study in Britain). MOst evening after dinner we would have tea with another neighbour, Lim, from Malaysia, and try to solve the world's problems. My apologies for any remaining typos in this dissertation.
CAMBRIDGE, 1974 and 2015 Hello Sara, Here are some thoughts on Cambridge (and university education in general). I hope you do not mind if I send this text to my daughter, Tamara (Tam, 14.5 years old), who has been living in Poland since summer 2019, and who is now trying to decide which courses to take at the local liceum. Having completed O-Levels in summer 1972, I decided to study Geography, History and French in the Sixth Form, for A-Levels. In those days, the universities set these exams. The number of O-Levels was enormous, with some very unusual subjects covered. We used the Oxford Local Examination Board for the papers, not because it was the easiest! At A-Level stage, the Oxford & Cambridge Combined Board was preferred - reputedly more difficult, and expecting the sort of level of competence usually attained after the first year at uni. For that I was, in the end, thankful! Well, I really had no specific intention of going to uni. I had no idea what I wanted to do. When you are 16 work and the rest of life is still a long way away. My -Level subjects interested me, and that was about that. What really fascinated me was maritime design and architecture - at that time I was acting unofficislly as a sort of local publicity agent for P&A Campbell Limited, which operated passenger shipping services on the Bristol Channel - and where I spent most of my free time in summer, when I (and my parents) could afford it. And my ideas on the design and styling of ships were, in the early 1970 about 30 or 40 years out of date (but rather more up to date as regards pssenger accommodation, of course). Campbells would in any case be needing a replacement for their motorship, 'Balmoral', within a few years. The replacement was never built (it would then have cost a mere two million pounds), 'Balmoral' still exists, was in service until 2017, and is currently being restored for further service in the centre of Bristol. A lovely ship. Explore her website: www.thebalmoral.org.uk/latest-news/ - and, Sara, if you really want to see Britain, this is the best way to do so: th-cam.com/channels/Xgvo7ubRPAJWPkUS3Opepw.htmlvideos Arrives the fateful day when teachers start asking you about your 'university plans'. Horrified to her my answer 'non'e'. A complete idiot. 'You MUST, Cambridge or Oxford', their reply. So I filled in the UCCA form (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universities_Central_Council_on_Admissions), and put down my preferences - Cambridge, Durham, Aberdeen, Exeter and Bristol. One does not put both Cambridge and Oxford down. Each sees the other as 'that other place', and in any case, Oxford has the dubious reputation of attracting all the would-be clergy. Durham, Exeter and Bristol had good Geography departments. Cambridge, to a slightly lesser extent. Aberdeen had shipping. The North Sea oil boom was at its height. Many small passenger ships were being sold for work servicing the oil rigs. Then there was the halcyon summer of 1974, and three weeks of A-Levels, For each subject, around five papers, each of three hours' duration, mostly essay writing. French rather more - translations, essay, literature (Voltaire, Mauriac, Sartre), dictation, oral. The trouble with French A-Level and foreign language studies in general. Arts-related. Nothing technical or scientific! So nowadays you get courses called improbably 'Business English', as if it were a separate language. And after the exams, during the waiting-for-results vacuum, a three-week trip to Norway (which I managed to part finance through holiday jobs). Yes, i had been travelling alone since 13 years of age, fist on trains and on Campbells, then in 1972 and 1973 up to the Western and Northern Isles in Scotland. For ships, of course. Almost always, just before it was too late and the shipping services and ships disappeared. Sometimes, too late.
Will try to send this weekend, Sara. Currently reporting on the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen inauguration fter a quick trip into Infiesto on trains which were decidely not of Japanese standard, although fast (because they were running late. Chaotic.Very few passengers. But it is safer than driving . . .
Memories, some good, some not so good, of three years at Downing College 1975 to 78. and good memories of the conference on Mongolian connectivity at Selwyn College in December 2015. Not going there again though! Cold in winter, very cold. Will find some 2015 photos and send them to you on Twitter, give me 48 hours in day . . . .
Thank you for the comment! Wow! Must've made great memories there! Looking forward to the pictures!!
Congrats on 100 subscribers!🎉
