The Joy of Civ

The Joy of Civ is full of relaxing Civilization content. We play to explore, not necessarily to win.
There are no game breaking strategies to let you crush the AI at the highest difficulty levels. There probably won’t be many full game playthroughs, because honestly, how many games do any of us finish? There's no fast talking or fast moving because with a turn based game like Civ, we have the luxury of taking it slow.
As Sid Meier wrote in Civilization Through The Years, “the fun of this game [is] that the story [takes] place in the player’s mind.” Let’s see what stories unfold. Let’s take a moment to reflect on history - all that’s come before us. Let’s imagine. Let’s enjoy the sights and sounds of the little worlds that we get to play in, and in short, play to explore.

My Favorite Civ VI Graphical Mods - The Joy of Civ
Nice! I love this chill content!
Thank you!
Those barbs are such a menace, haha I really like your playing style. I tend to play the same, as I think that min maxing takes the fun out of it.
Haha yeah, my various lone exploration ships have had a hard time. It makes exploration more interesting though, I think.
@TheJoyofCiv it does, and it's sorta realistic too. It feels like exploring the East Indies and fighting pirates there. It's just a shame that the villages only give gold :/
First! I love this calmer and more explorative take of playing Civ! ❤
Thank you!
What settings have you changed in the PerfectWorld6 lua to get less desert tiles?
Unfortunately it's not exposed as a setting. I made one tiny tweak to the map script code itself. On my computer, it's located at: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\289070\1538122020\Map\PerfectWorld6.lua" I changed line 55 which sets the mconst.desertPercent. Initially it was 0.37 and I changed it to 0.20. From some web searching, that's closer to the real percent of non-arctic desert in the world. Note: I'm not sure it's the best idea to change the mod files themselves, but it's worked out for me so far!
Thanks!
This is shockingly pleasant
Thank you!
I would like to see some more sound balance in these games the music of the game a bit less and your voice a bit louder. Its relaxing but I find I have to turn my sound up so much ads can be shocking.
Thanks for the feedback! I love the music and sound in the game and try to let it feature, but I also do a few tweaks to the audio where the game sound should "duck" when I'm speaking and get quieter. It's possible it's not working as well as I want it to. Anyhow, I'll keep this suggestion in mind when I edit my next episode.
Could you maybe use the privateer to collect the tribal villages on the newly discovered islands?
Ha, good point! I always forget that coastal raiding works to collect tribal villages.
The game looks so good with tose civ 5 mods
Yeah, I played so long with the default, and now I don't think I can go back!
Hi! This might have been asked before but I was wondering if it could be possible to scale the UI up a little bit in future videos? It might of course be a stylistic choice to have it be small to show as much of the game without anything "extra" in the way but I'd personally love to see the yield ribbon, turns etc. easier. I watch these on my phone and I had to zoom to see the military size of England when you mentioned it, for example. Just a suggestion, love your videos! :)
That's a good suggestion. When I edit the videos, I often try to zoom in on the yield ribbons or other small details that I talk about, but I definitely miss out on doing it sometimes. Have you seen the zooming in any of the videos? Do you think if I was more consistent with that if it would be enough? Thanks for watching and sharing the idea!
I think I might just give your idea a try though. Probably a lot of people are watching on their phones.
This soothing take on Civ content is really cool!
Thank you! Glad you found the video and took the time to comment.
As someone who also enjoys civ not just to win but also for fun and RP I am glad I found this channel! My favorite ways to play is Elenore passive loyalty and the bee civilization mod because they let me just sit put and RP my civ through the ages.
Yeah, I think playing a loyalty focused series as Eleanor sometime would be good for the channel. Thanks for taking the time to comment, and I'm glad you found the channel too!
Found your channel through youtube recommendations. How you play is very relaxing
Cool, thanks for taking the time to comment and glad you found the channel!
hey :) can you put a link on the steam folder, so i can download the mods in one ? :3
Great idea, sorry for the delay! Here's the link to all of the mods I've been using for my latest series. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3347795176
I find this very relaxing
Glad to hear it!
i think the opposite. This extreme monoton and emotionless voice really brings me to sleep while annoying me passively
@mategamlet2808 Agreed
excellent series and exploration tactics
Wow those floods have been rough
In the long run they wind up really boosting the tiles though - bring 'em on!
That was brutal
Haha, yeah. My very first streaming series on TH-cam and I get a city with a wonder razed! Keeps me humble. :-)
love these videos! I discovered your channel recently and the way you play the game really resonates with me. I like how you immerse yourself (and us) into the world
Fantastic! It's such a great game and I love how each play-through feels different. I'm really digging the PerfectWorld6 map script - the maps in the last few series have been super cool to play. Anyhow, I'm planning on continuing to put out videos like this so definitely keep an eye out for more!
@@TheJoyofCiv nice! I just downloaded perfect world 6 after watching episode 1 and am planning on giving it a try soon :)
I like how you've started thinking out loud more, explaining your thought process. And also mentioning things like what shortcut keys you use. Makes it easy to bring what you do to my own games
Thanks for the comment! I'm definitely still getting the feel for how best to tell "the story of the game" as I play through. Good to know what sort of stuff is working well.
Great channel. You’re unique among civ content creators. Your videos show the way I like to play. It’s not about min/maxing every decision and “winning”. It’s about having fun and enjoying the experience. One request - your games always look visually great. In your video description, can you show the mods you use? And/or do another video of your favorite mods and then list them in the video description.
Thanks for the feedback! I figured I wasn't the only one out there who likes this kind of play style! :-) Thanks for the suggestion re: mods - in my new series on City States, I included a full mod list in the description.
About halfway through you did something that made the game look brighter/more vibrant, I'm curious what was it?
Hi, thanks for the comment. I play with the Animated TIme of Day setting enabled - it's possible that I paused recording at one point and then resumed it again after the "time of day" became brighter. That's my only guess, hope it helps.
@@TheJoyofCiv Oh cool, thanks!
Just stumble upon your channel man. Sucks that your channel is still relatively small, but I often find myself playing civ to relax just like you do. So I really enjoyed your videos, for those lazy days when I don't even bother to turn the game on. Thank you for creating the channel, may the algorithm gods shine their light on your vids lol :D
Haha, thanks for the comment! Yeah, definitely pretty small time still but who knows what the future holds. :-) I still feel like I'm figuring out the right pace/approach to videos on the channel, but I'm glad to hear that people like you are enjoying the relaxing style.
Your channel is my new favorite! I like to watch these in bed before sleep, they are calming while also being very interesting. I just played a farm-focused khmer game inspired by your first series. It was my first emperor win (and first religious win), the farms were absolutely bonkers and it was so much fun! Thanks for the inspiration and keep up the wonderful work :)
That's great! I really enjoyed that Khmer game, I actually played it out a little further offline to see how large the cities would get. I might bring some gameplay from that one back in a future series, TBD. Congrats on the Emperor win and thanks for watching!
Love the video! Few questions, which mod keeps trees around the quarry? I have a lot of aesthetic mods but unsure which one does that? I have Leugi’s City’s, Civ5 skin, all the JNR environmental mods + extra district buildings. What is your mod list? Also, which is the one that makes it different colours when clicking a builder? 😎
Hey thanks for the comment! I think I'm using basically the mods you listed there - I think the forest shows around the quarry b/c the amber that was mined was present in a forest. I've noticed that the terrain feature persists if you improve a bonus/luxury resource tile. For another example, the marsh will remain on a marsh tile with rice after you farm it, where typically you have to remove the marsh to put down a farm.
I was thinking same, thanks
Nice video. Why is the colors of your game less cartoony? Is this a mod?
Yeah, I'm using the Civ V environment mod for Civ VI. Just started using it in my last series, and I have to say I think I can't go back to the old art style. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1702339134
Love the content!
Thanks!
Enjoyed the series. Really fun map
Cool! I agree, the map was the highlight.
It's a nice idea to explore the modern era. I have never made it that far. Would be nice to hear your thoughts on it
The game starts to feel a lot different at that point, but can still be fun.
Awesome!
Thanks!
Excellent videos. Please continue the good work
Thank you!
Big fan of this series bro. Would love to see more!!
Thanks! It's been a fantastic map to explore!
I like the civ 5 skin. I think you should tighten up your thoughts when going over your empire during pauses, but I really enjoy those narrations
I also hope, and this is just optimizing gameplay, that you are making sure each city is working good tiles. Tough start though with the desert, glad to see the settles on the islands.
And Petra should boost the appeal of the tile next to the preserve to get yield
Thanks for the feedback! And yeah, I'm still working on getting the right style down for my commentary during the play sessions. Maybe I'll try telling more of "the story of the game" and see how that goes.
Yeah, I do some optimizing but it's definitely not my focus. These PerfectWorld6 maps do tend to have large deserts, but I think it makes for interesting challenges.
Playing my country and no coments? Let me fix that
Hell yeah
Woohoo! Glad you're here watching, I hope I do right by the country of Portugal in the game!
Which graphical mods do you have active in this footage?
The one that changes the look the most is the Civ 5 environment skin. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1702339134 I also cover a few other graphics mods that I use in this video: th-cam.com/video/BxQs8uokPTE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=b8nBXKtk86u6WEft
For a channel that is so focused on taking things slow, I'm surprised that you have quick movement and quick combat on. I'd love to see the default slower movement and combat, it is more detailed and I feel it would fit your pace better.
Yeah, I started with the full movement and combat for my very first video or two, but it almost seemed too slow. I'm not sure I've hit on quite the right pacing for any of it yet, so maybe I'll try turning one or both back on for another go at it.
This is legit a crazy throwback to the old Drew Durnill type Civ videos. Holy that sent me back in time lol.
Haha, I think I might have watched one of his AI vs AI battles. Are those the ones you're referring to?
@@TheJoyofCiv Those and also the ones where he'd play a game of civ 6 as let's say Germany or the USA one of the original 8 CIVs when the game was still really basic, and previously his CIV 5 Let's Plays.
Really enjoying the playthrough so far! 2 things I noticed, which you should maybe look for: Getting the scout/warrior west to clear those tribal villages as soon as possible and maxing out your trade route capacity by further internal/external routes from your smaller cities :)
Cool! Glad you're liking it! I've already pre-recorded the next couple videos, so I can't take that advice directly, but thanks for weighing in with the suggestion!
I once tried to record videos like yours some time ago with the mod Realism Invictus for Civ IV, all the while trying to teach history and language (my passions) to the viewer. It was unfortunately too tough and time consuming of a job for me to do everything I wanted to do, but you did it. The bottom line is that you are doing a tremendous job at this, which I absolutely love! Keep up the great work!
Thanks so much for the feedback! I'd like to incorporate more of the rich history that the game builds on into my videos - I need to figure out how to blend that with the playthrough segments - still working out how to deliver what I want on this channel. But I'm glad that what's here is resonating a bit already at least!
What is this visual mode?
I was thinking the same thing... My PC makes the Civ VI maps pretty... but not this pretty!
This is the civ 5 environment skin for civ 6!
Yeah as another commenter mentioned, probably the biggest visual change is the Civ 5 environment skin: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1702339134 I also use a few other graphics mods described (and linked) in this video: th-cam.com/video/BxQs8uokPTE/w-d-xo.html
For some reason the map reminds me of some kind of Japan or maybe Oceania
Yeah, I can see that. The map type is revealed in the next episode though: th-cam.com/video/J7KwoKDet6I/w-d-xo.htmlsi=9BswsUaoH8FT9jMZ
Wonderful map painting.
Thanks! It's pretty satisfying to make your mark on the map as the game progresses, and laying down a lot of farms definitely improves the looks even more (not to mention helps to grow enormous cities).
This is exactly how I play this game, paying attention to the small details
Fantastic! I think it makes the game much more enjoyable to play that way.
Very interesting gameplay. I have several questions though: 1. In your description you marked the map as ???. Does that mean that it’s random? 2. Can you please link all the mods you are using in your gameplay? I want to get the same experience as you when I play Civ VI Thanks ❤
Thanks for the comment! 1. Yeah, the map is a bit of a surprise. It'll be revealed in an upcoming episode, so I'm going to keep it as ??? for now. :D 2. You're not the first person who has asked, I've just been slacking on posting this. But I do plan on doing it!
I've just found your channel and this is exactly the kind of content for Civ VI I've been looking for for a long time. The mods are also wonderful. Thank you for sharing them with us
Great! I'm glad you like it, thanks for commenting!
Damm if I knew you would be playing a naval based game next, I would have also recommended a mod called "Sukritakt's Oceans". Tbh I'm surprised you don't already have it on - given the absolutely legendary status this mod has reached. If I had to pick one mod that every civ player will agree is one of, if not THE best mod - it would be this one. Without this mod, oceans feel dry, empty and quite boring, especially if you're playing a naval civ. Due to the lack of resources, naval civs also struggled a bit in terms of balance. With this mod, the coasts are very lively and beautiful. You have colorful marine plant and animal life - that shine through the ocean and give more realism and vibrancy to the coast tiles. There are also more resources and features specifically for coasts - like lobsters, crab, seals, caviar (in lakes), turtles, and so on! These don't cloud or oversaturate the coast at all, but provide a much needed filling. Btw in civ most big, highly rated mods are compatible with each other - so you will have no problems running this mod with all the ones you're using (including this environment one). If you do get this one, don't forget to actually include it in the advanced settings when creating a game (you gotta check the box to actually load it in). Sadly, I do think this would mean you'll have to restart this game or use it in your next series if you wanna play with it. In any case, I love your videos and your chill take on the game and it reminds me why I first started playing civ. Thx for testing out the mod as well, I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Thanks for the great comment! TBH I've never even tried that mod - I usually stick to mods that don't change gameplay, but it sounds like that one might change it just slightly enough to be an improvement w/out other drastic changes. If I do another series with a naval focused civ, I'll definitely consider using that mod. Thanks again for the great ideas here!
Just came to the comments to look if anyone said something about ocean one of my favorite mods
Love the content! Super unique and very fun. Thanks for uploading!
Glad you enjoy it!
Just wanted to give massive props to your work with this channel - the soothing nature of it, the focus on exploration and fun rather than minmaxing for a perfect game, and just what you're doing has worked, since I am now finally enjoying Civ again, appreciating building a nice American empire rather than trying to optimize everything as much as I can (though I doubt the people of Baltimore will appreciate being between two volcanoes). The only thing I could request is I would love a mod list to know what you're using, I already got the graphical mods you recommended and they are quite nice. Keep it up man!
Whoah! This is my favorite comment on the channel so far! I'm glad you like the content. And yeah, I need to collate a mod list. I'll do that as a post or something. Thanks again for the support!
I really like "City Sprawl Graphics" - it adds a lot more buildings on the periphery of districts placed next to the city centre. Makes district tiles feel a lot more urban.
Ah good one! I added it and will play with it enabled in my next series.
Civ 5 environmental skin for Civ 6. That's my absolute favorite visual mod for Civ6. There's also Vegetation Variety mod for Civ 5 environmental skin. It's also compatible with Hillier hills and basically all mods out there. The game looks so good. Rather than looking at a cartoon-y art style, I feel way immersed with these mods. It's gritty and slightly darker and suits the vibe way more imo.
Thanks for the tip! I'm going to give that one a try for my next series!
yes I use this
This was realy helpful
Great! Thanks for the comment!
