Winter swimming: how to make the most of cold dips and hot saunas
In our December virtual chat with Emma O'Kelly and Dr Mark Harper, we covered the benefits of contrast therapy including the effects of heat and cold on the body, the optimum sauna temperature and how to properly use a sauna. We also touched on the rise of community saunas and how you can push for your local authority to set one up in your area!

Move of the month: Kettlebell Good Morning
มุมมอง 92814 วันที่ผ่านมา
This move primarily works the hamstrings on the back of the legs giving us improved strength and flexibility in our lower body - but the glutes, the inner thighs, the abs and the muscles down the length of the spine get a little workout too. Great for improving those powerful leg kicks and rotations! Equipment needed: Kettlebell How to do Kettlebell Good Morning 1. Stand with feet hip width apa...
Meet Lorraine Candy: mum, journalist, editor, author, podcaster and swimmer

Meet Lorraine Candy: mum, journalist, editor, author, podcaster and swimmer After learning front crawl in her late 40s, Lorraine Candy took on a series of open water swimming challenges including a 6-person relay of Lake Geneva, the Bantham Swoosh and, most recently, the Scilly Swim Challenge (which you can read about in the October issue of Outdoor Swimmer). As well as satisfying her quest for...
Swimming in the Thames: a fascinating history
มุมมอง 1722 หลายเดือนก่อน
When it comes to swimming in the Thames, previous generations probably had it better than us. They had glorious swimming spots along the river, complete with diving boards and changing facilities. But it wasn’t always equal, with men hanging onto their single sex (and nude) bathing places into the 1970s. We spoke with historian Dr George Townsend to find out more. Dr George Townsend is an indep...
Interview with marathon swimmer Yannis Leonidou
มุมมอง 202 หลายเดือนก่อน
After taking part in UltraSwim 33.3 in 2023, Yannis Leonidou wanted to push his limits further. He decided to do a crossing never done before. Starting from Gavdos island (the southmost point of Europe) he swam to Sfakia Crete, a distance of 40km. We spoke with Yannis to find out what inspired him, how he organised such a swim, and how he trained for it.
Move of the month: Upper Trapezius Stretch
มุมมอง 7922 หลายเดือนก่อน
When I am coaching open water swimming one of the most common complaints in swimmers is a sore neck. When we think of front crawl in terms of movement patterns there is a huge amount of repetition, particularly involving the shoulders and neck. Whilst seeing a coach will help you improve your technique and focus on what could be causing issues, this move is a wonderful stretch that will help im...
Embrace the cold water with a Zoggs silver-lined swimsuit!

Can digital editor Abi entice her friend into the cold water this winter with Zoggs new range of thermal open water swimwear? Abi's friend Lisa is a wild swimmer but she tends to stick to the warmer months, and even then she prefers to wear something long sleeve or with a bit of extra insulation. Armed with four gorgeous swimsuits from Zoggs new range of silver-lined swimwear, Abi met Lisa one ...
Interview with Olympian and Channel Swimmer Dan Wallace
มุมมอง 1892 หลายเดือนก่อน
This summer, Dan Wallace swam across the English Channel. You might think this would be easy for an Olympic swimmer. But if you watch the video from his swim, you will see how much he struggled, and how close he came to giving up. Dan has also embraced winter swimming and has taken part in several ice swimming championships. This is unusual. Not many elite swimmers take up ice and marathon swim...

Move of the month: Dead Bug
มุมมอง 1.3K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Dead Bug is a great core exercise for swimmers looking to improve their body position in the water. Move of the month: Kettlebell Around the World

This is a great warm up for the shoulders as well as being a really safe exercise for the shoulders due to the range of movement it puts the shoulder through. This is the perfect introductory exercise to kettlebells if you have n...
Move of the month: Cuban press
มุมมอง 2543 หลายเดือนก่อน
The Cuban Press is series of moves that works the muscles that stabilise the shoulders and enable rotation. It’s common to forget that we need to strengthen the muscles that enable rotation until we need to recover from an injury, as any swimmers out there suffering from ‘rotator cuff’ injury will now know. Having strength in these muscles will not only prevent injury, but also make us stronger...

I think the silver should be woven into the swimsuit as opposed to being a separate lining then it wouldn't balloon when you first get in.

The thermal lining is really good. The only let down is that the swim suits do not have any cups or bust support, and therefore tend to flatten your breast and at size 22 it is not the prettiest sight 🙃. Lovely and colourful fabric.

My main issue with breast stroke, which I love, is that it gives me knee, back and neck problems (and I think that's fairly common) so I'd be interested in a video which addresses that, although I'll certainly take on board keeping my elbows in, as I thought that looked as if it might be the key.

I much prefer breaststroke in open water. I feel safer seeing where I am going, seeing other river users, seeing the wildlife …and the occasional floating log! It doesn’t get the love or attention it should - more tips and advice please, I’m bored of the obsession with front crawl. Also, I have this wetsuit and it’s fab! Thanks 👍

Hi, I've been following you for a long time and everything in your videos has always been spectacular. The sessions are great, the quality is fantastic... this channel is absolutely brilliant and you helped me a lot with the majority of my curiosities about swimming, thank you so much. Anyway, I would like to make a suggestion (if it's not a problem): I'm convinced that you can add a really funny video on your channel to show us some of the funniest things happened while swimming, something like a "oops and bloopers" compilation. For example, you could make a compilation of all of the times where some swimmers get "caught" on video while peeing in the water. Once, before a swimming race in the sea, my uncle said "the sea is calling me to let me pee in it, I must go now" and that was hilarious, so funny, he always tells me there are 2 types of divers and swimmers: those who pee in the water and those who lie, you can also include those moments in the future videos just to keep having a bit of humor on your channel, you can use both old and new clips, what do you think? I know it sounds weird, but, for me, it's the funniest thing about and swimmers. When a swimmer pees in the water or even in the pool, I think he demonstrates to be someone who is not afraid of consequences or to be judged. I think it's something that can come out great! I'd be so so happy to watch it, let me know, have a great day!
