Tietê (live on studio)
"Trópicos" is a multicultural music performance in which I combine my musical instrument, Knurl, with songs written in four different languages (Portuguese, Spanish , English and Dutch). Through this music, storytelling, and performance, I share reflections with the audience about our current globalised world and its virtual relationships, highlighting the positive impact of self-made technologies in emerging countries of tropical regions.
Lyrics:
--PT--
novas sistemas
novas frequencias
de viver para si mesma

It could have been
a defense mechanism
becoming tourist of my own agenda
Without you wanting it
the day took two hours of your life to get back home
In São Paulo you spend the day
Looking at window
dreaming with a calm life
If you don't hurry the city loop will take you
If you don't hurry up...
When I find, a shortcut
new borders are created
new systems
new frequencies
to live my live for myself

"Tremzinho do Caipira" is one of the most famous works by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos. Ever since I read his biography, I've held onto the dream of following his path by traveling around Brazil, learning about its many worlds and cultures. This piece of music is inspired by the places he visited, including when he returned to Paranaguá after two years. He arrived on the same day and a...

Looks like a nice festival! John Lambert, the inventor of the Eigenharp was toying with similar ideas of audience-musician and musician-musician interactions. His dream was that there should be a musical language that people could use to "play" setup changes as part of the performance, influencing other musicians, provoking those to improvise with the new situation. The original Eigenharp software was internally fully based on this language, all features could be altered and setups be built from scratch just by playing notes on an Eigenharp connected to the system. The idea sounded intriguing indeed, but was "a little" over the head of most people. It required vast imagination skills to keep the schematics of the setup with hundreds of nodes in mind - and one had to learn the language with a vocabulary of many hundred words. Afaik only a hand full of people ever put in the effort to learn this. And it was asking a lot from an audience to first learn a new language to participate in a performance. :) But still, the concept was fascinating! If you are interested to see how this language looked like search for Eigenharp "An Introduction to Belcanto". So, giving the people a few intuitive expressions that they can use to influence the performance sounds very audience friendly in comparison! :)

Great point! Thank you for always my videos @ferdinand9802 . At this point of the project I have learned and performed most of my practice as a maker with 3D printing technology. Although it would indeed be quite interesting to see this instrument made in wood, I don't want to spend time relearning the necessary skills to make that possible. I would rather collaborate with a luthier for it. Who knows someday there will be a knurl made with wood! 🔥

    • @raafandrade
      @raafandrade 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Regarding the different set of strings, the instrument is tuned inspired in the harmonic circle, so I have 16 open strings notes to create different resonances with it! 🎉 Every set of strings has its own pickup and can be determined to different sound or same ones

    • @ferdinand9802
      @ferdinand9802 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@raafandrade Makes sense, making this efficiently with a (particularly 3 axis) CNC would probably require/benefit from quite some redesign. And a luthier instrument will most likely be even better anyways. Fortunately your instrument is so different that people have no expectations what it is supposed to be made of. Polymers sound plausible for "outer space alien instruments" :) I am currently experimenting with wind-instruments, there musicians are pretty preoccupied against "plastic", because they associate this with "cheap" and dull. (Even though high performance polymers (and particularly medical-grade, bio-compatible resins) can be by factors more expensive than very expensive wood or even silver and often outshine those in blind tests when reproducing historical wind instruments.) Psychology is hard to beat, as soon as flutists see a "plastic instrument" they look down on it out of habit - and most likely really perceive the sound as worse. Like in some experiments where people considered expensive wine as undrinkable when they were told up front that it's some novel instant wine made with wine-powder and water :)

I have seen a few of your versions of "Knurl". I think this one works very well. -You made structure to hold it in place so that the vibrations are not dampened by the player's body. -it can be rotated to 1 of 4 planes for playing activity. On a different matter, I suggest listening to your own recordings. It seems to me that the electronic, repetitive beats are way too loud in relationship to what you are bowing. I suggest, just develop plucking, like a harp, and intermingling bowing with it, rather than relying on mechanical repetitions. Your bowing has the seeds of deep, organic sound making, why make it sound mechanical in places?

"Music has to be the new pattern of behaviour" you're a legend! I'm so blessed to have stumbled across this in my time... the eerie tone of this performance creates a flavour of a sort of unknowing (one i'd say as to how far these musical explorations may lead us), and I think it matches perfectly as an introduction to the Knurl.
