"Rescue of Enfield Falls," Walk in the Park episode 232
Visitors today walk into the upper gorge at Robert H. Treman State Park near Ithaca, NY to see the spectacular Lucifer Falls plunge into its huge rock amphitheater. But in the early 1800s, it was called Enfield Falls, as was the "agricultural service hamlet" of Enfield Falls just upstream, complete with mills, a blacksmith shop, post office, school, general store and other businesses as well as a couple of dozen houses. In 1853, Henrietta Wickham opened the Enfield Falls Hotel to serve tourists who found their ways up the country roads to see this gem of New York State scenery. But by 1914, the hamlet was in decline, the hotel was in ruins, and the wooden walkways into Enfield Glen that had been built and maintained by the hotel operators had fallen apart.
In 1915, a prominent businessman and his wife from Ithaca drove their car up the new state highway near Enfield Falls. They had come to enjoy the gorge and waterfalls, as they had remembered them from ten years earlier. But they were disappointed and dismayed by the condition of the place. They were Robert H. Treman and his wife Laura. Robert Treman determined to restore beauty to the place and to make the gorge and falls accessible to the public once more, and forever.

Wanted to add -- I remember when Bare Hill was much more bare than it is today -- acres with no trees at all, and there were still a few of the bowling-ball sized geodes scattered around -- and the word back then was that it had been bare since the pre-colonial days, though I think that in reality it had been farmed in the late 19th century into the very early 20th. It's looking like in 50 years there won't be much 'bare' on Bare Hill any longer....

Just found your video. Parents were from Rochester, but my family grew up in Maryland (father was a professor at the University of Maryland) -- had lots of relatives in the Rochester area, and our family had a cottage at the corner of Town Line Rd and Bare Hill Rd (a 19th century 1-room schoolhouse) -- so we came up to 'The Lake' a few times a year to vacation and visit relatives -- and hike Bare Hill. My dad eventually sold the cottage because the local taxes kept going up and up, and the place was only used a few weeks a year. But my 'go to' place is 'The Lake.' I'll be staying at a cottage on the shores of Canandaigua Lake in mid-August with my oldest daughter and her family -- love the area. Thank you!

I love it up here! It is too bad that the taxes in New York state are so high! Between the taxes and the money it requires to heat buildings in the winter it is difficult to persuade industries with decent-paying jobs to move into state. Not to mention the cold and snow ..12+ feet/year, Syracuse, somewhat less in Ithaca (the lake also somewhat moderates the temperature around it )

2015 was cold enough but it was too windy. It wasn't a natural local cold it was a jet stream polar vortex dip wind driven cold which although it feels colder may makes the water less likely to freeze, but probably lowers the overall water volume temp more.

A very nice history talk by Peter Jemison. However - at approx. 12:40 - when he talks about the Sullivan-Clinton Campaign of 1779 - he leaves out one very important fact! The reason Geo. Washigton sent an army of 5,000 men - huge at that time in the Revolutionary War - to destroy the Seneca was *IN RETALIATION* for the slaughter of innocents at the Cherry Valley (NY) Massacre. The Seneca were known as fierce warriors but at Cherry Valley they killed innocent women and children. This was just one of other similar British-Iroquois raids on American settlements. But this massacre forced Washington to protect the frontier from then Seneca savagery. And it led to the destruction of the Seneca Nation. (Just Google Cherry Valley Massacre).

I grew up in Ithaca in the 1960s through the 1970s, graduating high school there in 1982! I remember when Stewart Park has a toy train ride for kids and there was a concession stand with snacks and a few other playground rides as well as even a merry go round. Back through the 1960s and early 1970s there was a small zoo in the park also! The zoo had monkeys, a pair of peacocks and other animals, nearest the shore though there was a large duck pond that was beside the Fall Creek Inlet next to the ground keepers building. Also the wooded area to the left of the main entrance is the bird sanctuary that was for a long time used as part of the movie studio as well. Other facts about Ithaca is now mostly forgotten but a number of movies WERE FILMED IN ITHACA on location even after the original movie studio vanished!! In fact one of these movies was The Three Stooges Meet Hercules which was filmed on location in Ithaca at the Clinton Drug Store (now CVS). And the Bird Sanctuary doubled as a "jungle" for the early Tarzan serial movies as well in the 1940s!! Further unlisted film credits also include that a few of the Our Gang/ Little Rascals episodes were even shot on location in Ithaca NY! And while that isn't the "only claim to fame" for Ithaca NY, as there are other historical facts about the town as well that is seldom known today in 2020!! For example the OLDEST KNOWN advertisement for an "ice cream sundae" is actually from Ithaca NY, and the company known as Emerson Power Transmissions was originally the home of Borg Warner which back then was the corporate headquarters for the company. While this you might find less interesting, what you fail to understand is that Borg Warner worked with Otis Elevator making chain and other products for elevators, as well as many of the chain products used by a large number of other manufacturers like General Motors, Ford and Chrysler and the list of parts Borg Warner produced only goes on from there. Cayuga Lake was also one of the testing grounds for the iron clad battleship that USS Merrimack which (iron clad of the North) used to defeat the south in the Civil War....ending slavery!
