Lobster Boat Update - July 2024
Falk gives a a quick behind-the-scenes on our redesigned Lobster Boat build! Before we can build a fiberglass boat, we need a mold. And before we can build a mold, we need a "plug"... a perfectly shaped hull to form the mold around.
Here Falk shows our work-in-progress on the plug we'll use for the hull mold. Since the hull mold will be used for every future fiberglass Lobster Boat we build, here's lots of detail work in this phase to ensure we end up with a flawless shape.
The plug is being built from MDF instead of wood. Since the plug itself will never go in the water, that means we can use this affordable material that you'd never use for the hull of an actual boat. MDF has a consistent density and texture, so we don't have to work around any flaws or knots you'd have in natural wood grain. As a result, fairing the boat into its final shape is much less time consuming than it would be otherwise.

    I am wondering how far the lining that controls the boom's swinging extends. My boom is connected in the middle and bottom part of the boat and only extends, does not move position. This one seems to be swinging side to side, but does it extend too?

    • @ghboats
      @ghboats 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Stefan -- the line that controls the swing of the boom is called the mainsheet. It's long enough that the boom can swing out to around 60 degrees on either side (I'm guesstimating here). I'm not sure what you mean when you say your boom "extends" instead of swings -- I can't form a picture in my head of what that looks like. Do you have a link to a photo or video showing something similar to your boat's boom looks like, particularly under sail?

    This seems very well thought out and carried to a fine finish. Will you offer a center board as option? In the northeast we have many close ledges and shoals and a pivoting board seems necessary for any shallow water exploration. Regardless job well done folks she’s a beauty a Bonnie and most likely a joy to behold!

    • @ghboats
      @ghboats หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good question! A centerboard would take up a bunch of room in the cockpit floor, which is why we used a daggerboard in this boat so we could keep the cockpit open. However, our 17' Jersey Skiff that uses the same hull does have a centerboard -- based on the traditional Jersey Skiff of the 1800s that was a working boat for marine salvage and did a lot of beaching, the centerboard makes a ton of sense there! ghboats.com/our-boats/17-jersey-skiff/

      That's what it costs to build a micro-cruiser, realistically. If you want a Scamp you can always build one yourself! The DIY kit with all the materials you'd need runs about $7500 currently, but if you are willing to put in the labor it's a great way to save money. Should move mast a little more forward for a gaft (catboat) rig set up. 10 times easier sail handling and set up with sail stored on boom with mast up or down never have to remove sail from boom. Had a 15 ft catboat for 18 years.

    • @ghboats
      @ghboats 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The balanced lug rig is functionally the same as the gaff, very easy and quick to rig and the sail and spar tuck nicely on the boom when you lower the halyard. The balanced lug is the same as on our Scamp, and you can see details in the rigging tutorial here: th-cam.com/video/BLTYt5Tt6Go/w-d-xo.html

    I think it’s amazing that a hull like this will ride decent in salt water waves, but be an absolutely horrible ride in the freshwater Great Lakes. It’s been proven over and over, Any hull without a v bottom all the way back will slap and pound in the Great Lakes. I believe it’s something to do with the steepness and tighter frequency of the waves.

    • @ghboats
      @ghboats 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Can't comment on the Great Lakes since I've never sailed there, but want to clarify that the Lobster Boat doesn't have a V-shaped keel all the way back. It is a semi-dory hull, so it has a V at the front to cut through chop, but transitions into a flat hull partway down. So it will both plane and give you a flat area to work in or sit nicely on the beach. You can see the underside here in this short update we just posted on the build process: th-cam.com/video/BQeA3mirAdA/w-d-xo.html
