Welcome to day 3 of my study abroad program’s tour of the Peloponnese!
Full disclosure, y’all: today did not start out the best. My brain was not liking me too much this morning, and some of my depression symptoms hit pretty hard for part of the day. These things are hard to explain, both because they’re intimate and personal and emotional, but also because they’re hard to put into words. I do my best, but it definitely can be hard to understand, so I apologize if it’s confusing! (If it makes you feel better, it’s confusing for me too.)
Anyway, enough about my feelings. Today we visited more things! We started off at the archaeological site of Mystras, an ancient Byzantine city on the side of a mountain. The site was incredible, and somewhere I’d definitely love to visit again! It had so many places to wander! It would be so fun to go for a day with a picnic lunch, a book, and a camera. Explore different places, have some photoshoots, read with the view in the background… After Mystras, we had about a 2 hour bus ride to our next stop: Messene. After a quick lunch in the parking lot, we toured the ruins and restorations of the city, then had some free time to explore on our own! It was nice to get to wander some, and I got my photographer on a bit with Theo as my model! There were so many gorgeous flowers all around the site, which were definitely a mood booster. After that, we had another ~2 hour bus ride to Olympia, where we stayed the night! Theo and I had an AMAZING dinner at Zeus restaurant. The food was to die for! We had Flogeres, which is feta cheese baked in fila dough topped with honey and sesame seeds, and domadakia, which is a risotto-like filling inside wine leaves. Then we shared Greek pizza (pizza topped with feta, tomato, green pepper, red onion, and olives) and a beef and red sauce pasta dish! Then, in true Greek fashion, they gave us complimentary cheesecake with cherries for dessert, which, like the rest of our meal, was incredible. (So good, in fact, that you might end up seeing this restaurant in tomorrow’s vlog too!) Our hotel had board games in the lobby/living area, so we played a game of chess when we got back. I haven’t played chess since I was in early elementary school, so I was not very good, but it was fun nonetheless! All in all, even though the day started out a bit rough emotionally, it was a great day.
