How do we "CREATE" in a Chaotic World? // Shoveit Podcast
In this episode, I explore the struggle of being a creative in a world overloaded with negative news. Every day, we're bombarded with stories of wars, poverty, and societal breakdowns, making it incredibly difficult to focus on creating and even more so its difficult to justify the whole concept of making silly videos when the world is a mess.
As creatives, it’s hard not to feel the weight of the world's problems, especially now when we are fed it constantly through our devices. But the truth is, we can’t take on the suffering of the entire world every day. This constant stream of bad news can drain our inspiration and emotional energy, leaving us paralyzed. We'll discuss how to protect your creative space, manage the overwhelming noise, and still find ways to produce meaningful work amidst global chaos.

From Fitness to Street Art: The Bold Leap of a Graffiti Artist. Feat. JossiePops // Shoveit Podcast

In this episode, I sit down with Jossiepops, someone I’ve known for years as a personal trainer. During lockdown, like many, he found himself with extra time on his hands, and that’s when a surprising transformation began... What seemed to begin as casual pencil drawings quickly evolved into something much bigger: a full-blown passion for street portraiture art. Now a graffiti artist making wav...
ATTENTION! Followers Do Not Matter!.... to the platforms. But what about Creators?
มุมมอง 685 หลายเดือนก่อน
Todays episode is sort of in response to a thread by Adam Mosseri the Head of Instagram where he has said Followers art important. But I disagree - Followers give control to the creator. This doesn't favour the platforms and this is why they push attention & engagement metrics over followers. Getting strong ‘old man screaming at clouds’ vibes Dil 😂 It doesn’t matter what anyone thinks - it’s how it is. Either play the rules of the game and have a chance of winning or…don’t I guess? My feed is hilarious - tree surgeons in Minnesota, excavator fails, mountain bikes, some local yokel talking about some bun shop in Ballybackofbeyond etc. To one of your points - I kinda disagree. Where the creator is doing something unique, I’ve actually remembered / followed them. El Burrito Monster being an example - again, he’s unique and impressive. Stands out against the inane bollocks. I once had far too many vids of Hasbullah, but I digress. Not sure if any of that is useful but it’s engagement 👍🏻

😂😂😂 the ironic thing is talking g about these topics is part the game as well But yeah my feed is so mixed but it bulks up the home page with loads of what ever I have watched recently so I have to dig for other stuff. But the “unique creator” point? What do you disagree with? lol cos it sounds like we both agree on that point? Maybe that’s where the algorithm works, it shows you someone random and unique but you like them an follow. Which is great. I guess my thought was that it’s hard for those things to get through when it’s flooded with so many people making algorithmic favours crap? 🤷‍♂️

@@shoveitstudio no in your video you say that when you see a cool video, you never remember the creator - you just remember the platform. Something to that effect. That’s the bit I disagree on. Where I’ve seen good unique stuff I’ve followed the creator as a result.

It’s the ultimate balancing act as a creator and a consumer. I’ll lean in and comment, this being a case in point, when there’s long form content that resonates. I enjoy following creators who make what they want to make, as opposed to what the trends/stats/market tells them what to make. But, as a creator, I see the stats on my videos and the ones smashing it (in my tiny bubble) are ones that I fling together with little care. The ones I take weeks to create, minimum impact! And then the algorithm devil appears on the shoulder saying to just give the people what they want, chase the views and engagement. But that then completely negates why I make the content in the first place! I make what I want to make, telling it how I want to tell it. And so the cycle repeats… I do wonder as well if it’s just a personality type as you mentioned at the start, as I’ve never been one to follow the trends. In fact I’d say I actively pursue the opposite! ‘Oh Peaky Blinders is great you say, nah never seen it’ and so on. It’s something I’m trying to get better at, but then I do realise that any creator is a bit different to the masses. I’ll buy camera gear, pay for plane tickets and hotels, travel thousands of miles, all to sit and make a video about a tiny distillery that interested me, knowing full well I’ll make not a sausage back and get about 150 views when I release it. But it’s what I like doing, and so I’ll continue to create for me. Meta, Google etc they have plenty folk to fill the coffers, I’ll just appreciate the storage and bandwidth afforded to me! Keep putting it out there chief, and I’ll keep watching it 🫡🥃

aaah thanks so much... I started this on my phone and saw the "Show more" clicked and and said "aaah I am gonna need my desktop browser for this one" lol But yes I agree with all of that and I have all the same thoughts. I think theres maybe a balance where short form attention stuff is there to stop people and maybe advertise the long for content all from one creator or channel or brand... but the issue is I find that its drowned out by all the nonsense.

    • @shoveitstudio

I really enjoyed this, it was great. We’ve been pals now since 2018. You’ve always had a great voice, and spoken so well. I’ve seen you try so many things, from podcasts to short films, the amazing travelogue stuff. The editing is always on point and the quality is amazing. You can make the most mundane day-to-day life stuff, really interesting, from losing a wallet or having your van serviced. Now maybe I am more inclined to watch it because you're a friend, but honestly, I’ve a lot of friends who I’ve muted and never see their stuff. The videos you’ve made that I most enjoy are when you reveal a bit of your creative process, the logo design, branding stuff, that’s really really useful. I’m typing this as I’m watching as well. I think it comes down to those awful words, niche, consistency and timing.

Love it dude, very relatable. I always wanted to get that TH-cam surge but it never came and it wasn't from the will of trying. I think it was because it may have been too forced and I was creating stuff which was similar to people succeeding. Now I'm in a good place where I don't care anymore. I create great art and enjoy the process and it's good to have video evidence of the work. If people love it, cool. It may increase, it may not but I'm marching to my own drum now and it feels awesome.

I was really hoping you had a solution here but turns out youre asking the same questions as me and we're all just as clueless as each other, but if nothing else its great to hear im not the only one chewing myself up over how much and how good my content is and what the point even is 😆 Since going freelance im really struggling with what to create, I used to just talk about whatever was interesting to me at that time but sudenly feel i should be talking more to my potential clients and using my content as a way to market my services but also I just want to create and play and maybe thats totally ok 🤷‍♂A so called business coach/guru recently told me I wasnt winning video work because my "dear diary youtube crap" was making me look like an amateur hobbyist. That hurt TBH and has stuck with me, is there some truth in that or does that guy just not "get it" who know! great to watch as always mate!

hahah I wish I had a solution to but I think its one of those situations where we just have to suck it top and ignore it lol I guess knowing the approach with your channel is key first isn't it. I've never really nailed mine down... I've always just wanted to make what ever comes to mind and no the bound by anything which is what I do...but that has probably been the biggest factor in my lack of growth. I'm coming round to that now haha.

Another great episode Dil! Totally agree with everything you said. Far better to create what you want at your own pace than mindlessly pushing crap out. I was testing reels at the end of last year, repurposed TH-cam content and it didn’t make me feel great so sacked it off and now focus my time on long form videos which I really enjoy making and feel offer more value to folks 👍

yes dude! thats good to hear. thanks for watching :) Theres nothing wrong with making short form reels yeah, but it's that feeling that we absolutely have to do it and that we have to do it their way. it stops originality and creativity and makes us all just copy paste.

Firstly, love your wife’s responds re. the tash …. A woman of wise words ! Great episode! Yeah, think when the excited giddy kid creative idea turns to an actual extensive thought process and not a creative process…. then just sack it (although I guess depends on some factors when they all interlink and that’s were the algorithm swipe on gets us by the balls) My main insta account is private …. which I’ve found I’m more creative with….for the love of it compared to a wee photography insta account I’ve got which is public but hardly post on ! It’s a weird one… Think as creators we constantly get an itch or inspiration to create as it’s the love of the process, either it be the edit, the satisfaction if it when just you or a few people it pleases…. Anywho, keep creating ✊🏻 (or not 😆) …. Just leaves me with ….I guess we’ll be spotting a ‘tashless plank of a seal out surfing’ 🌊🦭🏄🏻‍♂️ (this is meant in the most complimentary way btw) on the coast some day 🤙🏻…. P.s totally get the hands aging thing….. it’s just a sign of an enthusiastic creator 🙌🏻
