I'm a scientist by trade, but I'm also obsessed with guitars. On this channel I plan to build and modify guitars, and share my experiences testing certain ideas, materials, and sounds. I'm not a killer player, I don't have a ton of expensive gear or tools, and I'm definitely not an expert at setups or repair. I try to find affordable solutions, and I test through common, inexpensive equipment, because that's what I have to do. I hope you enjoy my videos!
A Forensic Science Custom Guitar Build- Making the Murdercaster
In this video, I take you through all the steps as I customize a run of the mill Squier into a ridiculous crime and forensic science themed guitar... the murdercaster.

The Gibson Slayer- Walnut 'SG' style guitar build
มุมมอง 1.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I love a good Gibson... there I said it. But I don't love car-down-payment level price tags, and frankly the quality of the Gibsons I've played recently is a bit sus. So, I'm making a knockoff.

Can removing tone knobs IMPROVE tone???
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I never liked my kit guitar build. It's a les paul style axe, but it has never had that bit and oomph you associate with a true LP. So I removed all the switches, knobs and caps other than two volume knobs.
Neck heel depth is shockingly inconsistent across 'Fender style' necks. A deep dive.
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I take a look at 5 different Fender, Squier and Warmoth necks to measure the depth of the neck at the heel and see whether this contributes to the 'high saddle' problems that are so common.
How do Modern Guitars Age? Myths and Realities

Can a guitar be every instrument? Jamstik Studio review
มุมมอง 3.6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Keyboard players are so lucky. With a few clicks, they can sound like anything they want. With a guitar synth, even lowly guitar players can do this. I check out an interesting one, the Jamstik Studio.

That guitar warped its neck on purpose. It was trying to tell you: "Don't sell me man, you'll regret it one day!" 😅
My ‘87 American Standard Strat is starting to show a little bit of aging and checking, but not nearly what a nitrocellulose paint job would show.
"Wipe on poly"? Do you know how to read a label?

Especially if you play with distorted sounds having a tone control before the amp or pedal is a hugely useful tool. Why one would want to throw this very important control away to get a tiny bit more top end I will never understand. Turning the treble control on your amp a fraction of a number (like going from 4 to 4.25 ) will get you as much or more brightness and clarity than ditching the tone control in your guitar. I went this route of ripping out the tone controls in a couple of guitars and basses decades ago and since then learned how important they can be especially with distorted sounds. I also learned that the volume knob on a guitar or bass can be quite useful as well. Where exactly in the signal chain you affect the sound with eq or a level change can have different effects on your final sound. Just a thought. Rip-em out if ya like I guess, sometimes we need to experience things ourselves.
When it rains I leave my Fender professional ii telecaster on the porch for about 2 to 3 hours that gives the brass saddles and the bridge a good beating but make sure it doesn't get to much moisture on it u have to keep a eye on it starting to get just a little rust on the bridge plate.
sg?? More like jazz or jag shape, but not much of anything to do with a sg. Even the horns are staggard but a cool build and good video .. thanks!
I have a bullet squire strat that is my "go to guitar" when I play out! ... have a tele and several others, yamaha, v guitar copy ( that's great too) and wow ...lots.But I would definitely recommend the squire bullet for the money and playability, fantastic guitar.
The difference in the two measurements is where you will run into string height problems. Maybe a shim needed. But do it correctly.
Ah, yes, but that old fender bridge carrier will accept a snap on ashtray cover without any mods. The Wilkinson requires tweaking to keep the cover on while in use. Don't use a cover? If you play finger style or Jazz, You should try it. It makes the tone to more rounded and mellow. Like others have said, break the edges of those sharp saddles, or you will be breaking the high strings, and de-wrapping the wound ones.
Na. Fingers bad. Leaves ridges. 1st coat apply using 400 grit sandpaper. Sanding the poly while applying creates some wood dust that acts with the poly and works as a grain filler while knocking down any raised grain. Makeup pads, microfiber cloth, disposable foam brushes. Don’t sand between coats. Dumb. Wipe on means very thin coats all you are doing is sanding off most if notall of the layer you just put on. Use the right applicator. Apply 7-10 coats. level sand (carefully) 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 etc. Do NOT wet sand on wood. Take another soft cloth makeup applicator etc. use McGuire’s ultimate compound, then McGuire’s ultimate polish if you use gloss poly.
Nice combination
Ok, thanks for the review. But I think what a guitarist wants mostly is to hear the instrument in a review.
Seems the pickup holes in Fender are smaller, you’ve noticed the same?
What model is it? Did I miss that part?
It looks great. Ignore the haters, they don't contribute anything.
Yes they do. Like the right way to do something and that is not a wipe on poly and pointing out hazards, warning others of bad advice like your comment etc. That makes you a hater?
With all due respect, after seeing this very careless technique there is no way I would take your advice on guitar refinishing based on this technique. This is an honest comment. Hone your skills and you will be taken more seriously. You had some good points, but the carelessness outweighed the positive aspects of this video. After the first minute or two, most people will click out of your video. I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt and watch the entire video, but I must admit, it wasn't easy. I'm not trying to be mean here by any stretch. I'm just hoping in the future, for your benefit, you will take more care and planning. I wish you the best.
Only a nutter 😂 uses scissors like this?
I bought a factory fender body painted with polyester it faded over time
Best tutorial ever. See myself doing exactly that way
Saddles are compensated for slightly shorter and longer scale lengths on each string.... more intonation adjustable and tuning stable
How do you find the q/pounders compared to Fender stock?
Should be called Guitar B.S. No science here just the usual waffle.
Omg slow this man how to use scissors. Lol
Horrible
I did not see any ground wire underneath the bridge when it was off. There should be a bit of exposed wire contacting the bridge and then grounded to one of the pots. If you have an electrical hum that goes away when your hand touched the bridge you need to add a wire.
i have one, i like the pickups eventhough its not humbuckers the best part is even string volume something missing even with some fenders n musicmans. no issue of sponge or rubber under pickup getting set by time making raising pickups difficult. the pots are mini n cheap, no shielding paint. but still i love it the strings are extra thin, there is some fret buzz. but the bass balances well even in the sitting position which sire u5 misses. it worth the price
The question is wrong . "Can" should be "does" and "improve" should be "change" . The "can" is open , we want a yes or no , disclosure , that is the point of the question , isn't it ? "Improve" is a matter of taste , subjective . "Does removing tone knobs change tone" , I guess you are trying to say . Answer : yes it does : it makes the guitar sound slightly brighter because the load of the tone pots is removed . Language.....
Good call. I've been yanking the tone AND volume pots from my basses since the 80s. Pickups wired in parallel to the jack. Losing the caps and the resistance across the pickups shifts the resonant point of the pickup windings upwards and sends a hotter signal to the jack. Tone and volume control happens at the pedals and amp.
I have a 2024 American Vintage II ‘57 Strat, and the finish is a top layer of what their marketing calls “nitrocellulose” (it’s not), over an extremely hard, thick layer of plastic. The “nitro” has plasticizers added to it, and you cannot put checks in it no matter what you do. It’s really false advertising on Fender’s part, and was one of the main reasons I bought the guitar. Fender does this to avoid warranty issues and returns from shipping climate finish damage. I’ve since sanded the entire finish off (with much difficulty), and I’m going to put a hand rubbed varnish from StewMac on it.
Agreed. It’s deceiving. That’s why I went MJT for my telecaster. I did buy a road work fender strat, which is supposed to be nitro finished. The next does wear in but the body… barely wears in
I'm sorry but... Why would you do that to a new guitar? There's a lot of options on a second hand market.
@bagazheful because it's my guitar, and I can do whatever I want to it? I also like modifying my guitars and working with my hands. If you don't, that's fine. I'm not the only person upset by Fender's false advertising. There are lots of posts about this online.
Have an SG going on 20 years and still no checking reliced guitars is a hoax lmao
My whole 2017 SG is checked top to bottom
Nitro is definitely better for acoustic guitars. For instance a Martin. I’ve owned many and they all have a certain tone that poly can’t achieve which is why Martin still uses nitro.
4:00 songs name?
I appreciate your information. I have several basses in my collection. I will be picking one of these up this Saturday. I'm looking forward to playing around with it
So many professional bass players in famous Rock bands use a pick.
Ive never seen anyone not think things threw, b4 starting, as much as this guy...wow
What model is it ?
This is an interesting video, but perhaps more interesting are the comments. This guy obviously isn't a pro, and I would not recommend anyone to follow every stage of his procedure (espcially the approach to scissors 😊). Even so, the level of venom directed at this guy is really mean, given that this is really just a little amateur video. He got a reasonable result with a modest level of knowledge and skill - surely that's a good thing? If you look carefully, you can see that a high level of sheen has been built up. You do have to look carefully because the filming is not of a good standard, but it's there. As for the comment that this product is not a wipe on finish, well that is technically so - it is not marketed as such. It does, in fact, wipe on very well (there are a few TH-cams out there demonstrating it in woodturning), is protective and can be buffed to a high gloss finish following wipe on. Minwax do make a wipe on version, and the product data sheets is slightly different.
Thank you! The whole point was to try something I knew nothing about, with a minimum of effort, just to see what the experience is like. I had never finished a guitar before. I got that body for next to nothing, and figured I'd give it a shot. It's held up pretty well. It's ironic that this is now my most popular video, when I think it's probably the worst one, but oh well!
Your preschool teacher would be ashamed! 😂
Can you raise the pickups on this G2220? Thank you.
thanks.. What is the exact model of this guitar, is there a trussrod steel bar at the neck, I wonder ? ..
Yeah... there's a proper way to cut the stuff up before you record. LOL LOL....sorry lol
I don't know how I ever passed first grade 🤣
The fret thing i think is a result of good technique and as you mentioned; higher quality alloy. After about 500-800 hours of play (for me about 2 years with 1-2hr/day) my squier cv is finished. I bought a mim classic series after that and it has more play and doesnt even really need its first fret level yet. I use lighter strings and lighter touch now, too.
Interesting. I have a number of CV necks and I'm honestly hesitant to make them everyday players because I'm afraid I'll wear out the cheaper alloy materials. I've recently become a big fan of stainless steel frets. I enjoy the feel and none of my SS fretted necks have developed fret wear over the years.
@@guitarscience6926 yeah its a big difference. Kinda surprised because fret wire is pretty cheap to begin with, also mine is chinese so its possible the indonesian ones have better frets. There are people talking about this online but I guess most people either quit or get another guitar before it becomes a problem? Stainless is interesting, im contemplating getting the tools and refretting it. Dont see any drawbacks with it at all.
Thank you for making these mistakes for me. I genuinely appreciate you
Cool color.
Interesting. I have it on my new pinecaster, and its like you said, it rings like crazy, and its lound even unpluged. BUT, its strange that on the bridge pickup, my BAJA MEX tele shines more, because of the rounded-nes of a tone that a original Fender bridge is giving. Wilky is more snappy and bright, and it shines more with a neck humbucker in my new guitar. Maybe i will get some more winded(powerfull) bridge pickup like you have SD quarterpound. Mine is a 9k standard tele singlecoil. Its good, but not exceptional. I must to mess around with a tone know all the time.
The fender bridge is what you should go with if you are looking for a great tele sound. Adding a heavier bridge will change the sound. But it appears that isn't what you prefer.
My best sounding guitar is a cheap 335 copy with no knobs. Just selector to output.
I have never seen anybody use scissors that way
Nice I'm going to try it now, thanks 🤘
