UGANDA 2024 - Self-Guided Travel, Safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park
Safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park is one of Uganda's most popular wildlife experiences, attracting visitors with its rich diversity of animals, stunning landscapes, and unique ecosystems. Located in western Uganda, Queen Elizabeth National Park spans nearly 2,000 square kilometers and is renowned for its impressive range of wildlife, including the iconic “Big Five” animals, vibrant birdlife, and scenic landscapes of savannah, wetlands, and crater lakes.

Queen Elizabeth National Park boasts a mix of ecosystems that make it a hotspot for biodiversity. The park features open savannah plains, dense forests, swamps, and volcanic crater lakes, each hosting unique wildlife species. The northern section of the park, known as the Kasenyi Plains, is an open grassland area ideal for game drives, while the lush Maramagambo Forest offers a more secluded setting to observe primates and forest birds. Additionally, the Kazinga Channel, a natural waterway connecting Lake Edward and Lake George, is a key attraction for water-based wildlife viewing.
Queen Elizabeth National Park is home to a diverse array of wildlife. Although rhinos are absent, the park offers a chance to see the other members of the Big Five-lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo-along with a variety of other animals. Highlights include:
Lions: The park is particularly famous for its tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha Sector. These lions are often seen resting in large fig trees, a behavior that is rare among lions and adds an extraordinary dimension to the safari experience.
Elephants and Buffalo: These large herbivores are commonly sighted throughout the park, often in large herds along the Kasenyi Plains or near water sources.
Leopards: Although elusive, leopards are occasionally spotted, especially during dawn or dusk when they are more active.
Hippos and Crocodiles: The Kazinga Channel is home to one of Africa’s largest concentrations of hippos, as well as numerous Nile crocodiles, which are easily visible from boat safaris.
Antelopes and Warthogs: Various antelope species, including the Uganda kob, bushbuck, and waterbuck, roam freely across the park, as do playful warthogs.
