When using a kamisori do you think it matters which side of the razor you use? Someone once told me it's a specific side you have to use but I don't see why you couldnt use both. Cheers my friend thank you for the video
Like sharpening a Kamisori blade from left to right, shaving with the engraved side up was favored by right-handed barbers of old. Therefore, some idiots advise you to shave with the engraved side up in the same way, but ignore it. When you shave your face by yourself with Kamisori, you can pay attention to the angle of the blade depending on the part of your face and use the side that is easy to shave freely.
@ Thank you my friend! This makes perfect sense the way you explain it
Very nice video my friend! Very relaxing
Thank you Sean.
Oh nice! you found a way to zoom in to the bevel.
@@nonamebear1136 I fixed a $3 smartphone magnifying glass to the smartphone with duct tape. As you can see from the video, it is very difficult to focus stably.
@@Dsktheshavingguy For sure. But you got it to work though.
Thank you for sharing.
Does this stone produce a different feeling edge than your other finishing stones? Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for your question. This whetstone "Akapin" is as soft as level 4 in hardness, but it gives a good edge to the razors as with stones of level 5 or 5+ hardness. In comparison with shaving, I feel there is no difference between the edges sharpened with Akapin and the edges sharpened with other lv 5 stones.
@@Dsktheshavingguy Same comfort and feeling then?
@nonamebear1136 I test with my thumb nail while I'm honing every time, and I do a hair or beard cut test right after I finish honing. And the edge sharpness test is carried out even after the last stropping. So if I shave my face with the same razor, I won't feel any difference in edge comfortness depending on the finish stone. On the other hand, if I sharpen different razors with the same finishing stone, of course I might feel different comfort with each razor.
My friend I thought your lather was very well done! Great shave as always, I enjoyed the crispy sound of the razor
@@seanstapelfeld Thanks Sean. This time, I focused on recording good sound of lathering and shaving. Of course I was totally influenced by your recent short movies. I'm glad you enjoyed my video.
Always on point with the hanging hair test my friend!
@@seanstapelfeld Thanks for your comment Sean. You make me motivated to sharpen razors and take the next videos.
Hey! Judging by the color of the suspension, nagura is harder than a whetstone. How suitable are such stones lv4 for razors and comfortable shaving compared to hard stones lv5?
I personally prefer the combination of level 5 stone "Asagi," "Mizu-Asagi" and Nagura to get a good edge. The “Akapin” stone in this video is level 4+, but it is excellent as a razor whetstone. There are many highly rated razor stones with a level 4 hardness. I hope this helps.
@@Dsktheshavingguy Thanks for your reply. In Western countries, preference is given to hard stones of level 5 or even 5+, and medium-hard stones of 4, 4+ and 4.5 are not very valued. But I am interested to know the opinion of the Japanese themselves on this matter.
@@sergey_ru I plan to sharpen the razor with lv4, 4+ and 5- JNAT whetstones. And I will take a video of the sharpness tests. Please look forward to it.
Thank you for sharing. The blade did take a beating from the head shave but not too bad. I also prefer a crisp edge for my head shave as well.
For the first time, I tested the sharpness of Tamahagane's straight razor after shaving my head. The sharpness was restored to a level that was comfortable for faceshave after stropping. However for a comfortable head shaving, I think I should touch the edge up with a whetstone with nagura. Best regards.
Do you prefer the symmetrical blade or a-symmetric? Thank you for sharing.
Like 99.9% of Japanese barbers, I prefer symmetrical Western straight razors to asymmetrical kamisori. Best regards.
It is really nice being able to see your collection of razors and stones. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for your comments as always. In the future, I plan to continue shooting videos of honing with whetstones that I have saved after using them a few times. Please look forward to next one.
Excellent shave my friend! The lather was great as well
@@seanstapelfeld Thanks, Sean. I recently changed my shaving bowl from stainless steel 10 cm diameter ($20) to ceramic 12 cm diameter ($2). I am satisfied with the good lather by 2$ bowl. Hahaha.
@ I’ve seen some guys use a cup to lather but I have to have a nice big bowl with a lot of space
Is there a number on the razor? A model? Thanks for sharing. 👍
@@Sustainashave Thank you for your questions. This Parker razor has no number and model engraving. I think this product was made in the 1970s when the manufacturer was about to stop producing razors.
Morning, Yes that matches all I know about them, they stopped stamping more razors towards the end of making razors. They likely had lots of blanks laying around so just got them out the door or they were found after brought in bulk and moved on. I guess we're never know just surmising. Nice head shave fella really quite impressive skills.. Have a nice day.
Very good !!! ( Brazil )

How do you order these stones and kit?
@@markteaney8381 Thank you for your questions. I picked up small whetstone and slurry from my collection. I made my own leather abrasive. I used a container for eye drops as a jug.
@Dsktheshavingguy thanks for the quick answer have a great one.
Tamahagane.. Is that not the same as traditional samurai sword metal
Thank you for your question. Traditional Japanese swords are made of 100% Tamahagane. On the other hand, Tamahagane Kamisoris are made by forging Tamahagane and mild steel on the blade part. Best regards.
Great test. It is a shame that you do not have a micro scope to show the difference in the cuts on the hair for each one. That would be interesting to see. Fantastic comparison. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and share. Take care.
Thank you for your comment. I tried to take videos with magnifying glass on my smartphone camera before, but the lighting on the edge was difficult and I couldn't take videos well. In this video, I am pleased to show my drinking friends that the razor edge I honed is as sharp as a professional replaceable blade razor. Take care, you too.
@@Dsktheshavingguy We just have to convince others that have a micro scope to do the comparison for us. :) I was testing out my phone camera with my 60x loop to see if I could get it to show the bevel. It works but it sure is tricky to hold both the razor and the loop.
Good shave. Thanks for sharing and I hope you take care.

great honing as always! Do you count or just by feel?
@@seanstapelfeld In the case of Japanese Kamisori honing, I used to count 10 times from right to left and 3 times from left to right. Recently, I decide the direction and frequency of honing by feeling.

Those stones sure make quick work at touching up those razors. Thank you for sharing.
@@nonamebear1136 Thank you for your comments as always. The combination of King-G1 (8 K) and Synthetic Nagura (12 K) is a good preprocess to JNAT for fast Touch up.
I really like your strop sir!
The numbers on Llama's strop, such as "8000," "5000," "2000," etc., indicate the thickness of the leather, not the abrasive force. If you find an affordable Llama strap with a small number on eBay, I highly recommend buying it.

Do you soak your tomo nagura before slurring? Is that stone 4 hardness? It is such a nice color. Thank you for sharing.
Mikawa-White Naguras do not need to be soaked before use. I think the hardness of the whetstone is level 5. It is the hardest whetstone I have.
I really like the style of that blade. Reminds me of some of the swedish blades. I will have to see if I can find one. Nice shave and thank you for sharing.
