1:38.8 lap at Club Motorsports in Porsche 718 Spyder
I was fortunate enough to crush another personal best this season. Unfortunately, the next day, I also crushed my car...not even on a PB or even a super-quick lap...it should have been about 3 seconds off the pace...and you drivers out there know that going 3 seconds slower feels like you drive at that speed and eat a bowl of cereal at the same time. Anyway, the big one finally happened to me.

Redemption. I missed achieving my goal of a sub-1-minute lap this past spring b/c I kept getting hung up in traffic. Ta da. I did it (and not by a couple hundredths...which would feel like a hollow victory). Hot day, tires overheated quickly so it was impossible to drive the whole session....or even 5 laps at this pace, but that wasn't my goal.

2:04 with three passes (which, when combined, cost just over a second) so a 2:03 should be easy. The Catalyst shows an optimal of 2:02. Tires are Cup2R's in stock size (245 front, 295 rear). 2.9 deg neg camber in front w/ just a touch of toe out. Rear camber is 2.4 with just a touch of toe in. The crazy thing is that my personal best was with tires that were completely worn out (corded the next session) and mismatched (Cup 2 fronts w/ Dunlop rears...I was using up the last bit of tread before mounting new Cup 2's for Watkins Glen)

One of my relatively clean hot laps at Calabogie. There are lots of areas to improve on, for sure. Coach Francis was able to carry 4mph more thru the apex of T1, didn't slow down as much over the crest of T15, etc... With a little more time to do data analysis and another day at the track, 2:19's are likely on the next visit to this super-challenging and very fun track.

While not as precise as my other laps, this one was quicker by a second. There was more 'hanging it out there' in this lap, tires were heated up from previous session, but cool enough to get excellent grip in the early part of the this session (this was my first full lap of the second session). Well, I knocked 1.3 seconds of last year's visit to LRP and logged a 1:00.03 lap, but failed to hit the sub-1-minute mark. I had several laps where the Garmin Catalyst showed me .5 to .7 ahead of this lap, but 'back traffic' ultimately thwarted those excellent runs. c'est la vie! :)

Hot weekend at Club Motorsports. Literally. High 80's air temp, high humidity and asphalt temps just under 140 in the paddock. It was HOT...especially for September. No slicks, no wider tires, no chips, no tricks. Just the stock 718 Spyder with extra camber (3.1 front, 2.5 rear...all with shims) and stock Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires that were half worn. I'm sure a better driver could wring more out of this setup, and maybe I'll be that driver someday. ;-D When I get time, I'll post the same lap plus the one before it using in-car GoPro and Track Addict video...

First time at Circuit Mont Tremblant. The RennSport Region folks were friendly and welcoming and the track is amazing. This is the most challenging track I've ever driven (and you know I've driven many challenging tracks). Lot's of high-speed high-consequence corners. Getting quick here is not for the faint of heart.

If there's a more beautiful track facility in the US, please let me know where. This place has not only a brilliant 3.6 mile track, but a stunning clubhouse, garages and grounds outdone only by Augusta National. No wonder it's a premiere and very exclusive private track. I can hardly believe how fortunate I was to be able to enjoy this place!

    What are your ride heights ? And swaybar settings? How do you avoid understeer

      Ride height is stock w/ stock struts. Swaybars are now back to middle settings front and rear. A couple of years ago, I adjusted them to help reduce understeer, but once I got more comfortable with the car moving around a lot, I realized I didn't need those bar settings. I avoid understeer (manage it, is more accurate) with lots of trail braking to load the front tires and do more directional change with rotation..., toe out front alignment helps too.

    If you would go from segment 1 to 2 and move a little to the right before and in that corner basically ducking twice ( so keep middle, duck in , out , duck in and duck out again the cornering speed would be greater and it would be better for tire management other than that pretty clean ! 🔥

      I'm not exactly sure what you mean (do you mean corners 1 & 2....i.e Big Bend?), but it sounds like you have some very specific advice. I imagine this is how you drive Big Bend. Do you have a video you can link me to so I can see how you drive it?

    Sorry to hear about your incident. I track at Club Motorsport often, and that is a great lap you did. Would you mind sharing what tires you were on when you did the 38.8? Very impressive!

      I was on Cup 2 R's. Previous day on Cup 2's (not the R's) I was able to run low 1:40's. If I'd started the second day w/ regular Cup 2's, I think I would have been in the 1:39's (about a second slower). I found that on a cool track in cool temps, the Cup2 R's work well. As soon as it gets hot (track temps over 100 and air temps in the 80's), the Cup 2 R's overheat quickly and my faster laps in those conditions are with the regular Cup 2's (my 58 second lap at LRP was with regular cup 2's)

      @@modernyankee Thanks for the insight. Those are some quick times. I'm in the 40s at CMS in my 718 GT4 on Cup 2s so we are in a similar range. I haven't done an alignment yet (all stock) so that's next for me. Good luck with your rebuild. I hope it goes smoothly and you are back on track soon.

      Thanks. I'm fine. Harnesses, lightweight CFRP seats, helmet and Simpson Hybrid S hans....and the car's crumple zone engineering...allowed me to walk away without a scratch or bruise. It was amazing!

      Poorly. ;) I think they'll last 2 sessions at the Glen (3?), 2 short sessions at LRP and probably 2 sessions at Club motorsports...maybe another 1-2 at Palmer. So 8 sessions total? Cup 2's last 2x longer. FYI my PB at LRP was on the Cup 2's, not the 2 R's. ;) correct tire for the appropriate conditions.

      @@modernyankee I've been pretty happy with Falken Azenis 660 on my 2013 Carrera S. Thinking about trying Nankang CR-S or Bridgestone RE71RS. I moved away from Cup2's as I was wearing out the shoulder on the rears pretty quickly. At least the Falkens can be swapped on the wheels as they are symmetric.

    If you like challenging track up north, you should try Calabogie, Ontario and Palmer, MA they are way more challenging

    If you want my opinion: solid run. Pointers if you want to improve are: you can turn in a little later into T1 and open up the corner more enabling you to carry more speed if you aren't bleeding to the inside as early. It's an easy mistake to make but fixing it will shave off a significant chunk of time. Also you can send it more up the hill as it's an uphill corner you can just send it in, sailing past the apex but getting caught by the hill; so understeer on apex but gripping up through the hill because the car gets shoved into the asphalt like free downforce lol. And last turn you can send it a little more as you'd want to slightly slide through the corner instead of gripping until the apex and then just planting it, so higher minimum speed and use all the track on exit; not just plant it and bleed off to the left by steering but rahter make it so despite turning as much as possible through out the whole corner you still end up on the edge of the track. If you can incorporate these couple of pointers, you'll be flying. Good luck :)

      Thanks, Eric. I spend a lot of time prepping before going to a track I've never driven before. That allows me to come up to speed quickly so I spend less time simply 'learning' the track and more time focusing on nuances. With the high cost of track days...especially those i had to drive 9 hours to get to,..this approach has significant benefits for me with regard to the value proposition. I'd definitely go back to Mont Tremblant. As noted above, I found it to be a more challenging track than any other I've driven....even more challenging than Pitt Race & Mid-Ohio.

I know the Mont-Tremblant track well and I'm really curious to know what the Catalyst had to suggest to improve the 1.7 second time. I can't see where you could have improved.... It looked like a really good lap. Had you taken the time to look at it? Just to satisfy my curiosity...

      @@rictelecom Good question. I just fired up my Catalyst to find out. 1st opportunity is .84 sec at the Carousel. Fastest time is when I braked 7' later, 20% harder than my average resulting in .23 seconds less braking duration. Max decel was 1.24g's (vs my avg of 1.04 g's). I also entered that segment at 85.4 mph (vs my avg of 80 mph...that surely had something to do with this. I'll wager that happened due growing a bigger set thru T7 on that lap). I had a 54 mph min speed (1.2 mph higher than my avg) and apexed just a touch earlier (still way around the corner (if the the track before and after the Carousel are vertical lines and the carousel is at the bottom, I apexed around '7 o'clock')...treating this like a single apex corner. Exit speed was higher sooner and (of course) that carries all the way to the braking zone at the entry to T10. 2nd opportunity is in T1/T2. Fastest time was with an earlier turn in and earlier apex. and significantly more speed carried deeper into T1. According to the Catalyst, my turn entry speed was 108.3 mph vs my average of 91.1mph, turn minimum speed was 92.1 vs my average of 88 mph and turn exit (effectively the apex of T2 at the top of the hill) was 95.1mph vs my average of 91.8 mph. Opportunity 3 is apparently worth .52 seconds and that's T7. Turn entry was significantly faster at 100.6mph vs my avg of 95.4mph. Turn exit was faster at 100.8mph vs my avg of 96.3mph. Oddly, my turn minimum speed was the same as my avg. So, I came in hotter & braked harder (1.02g vs .91g) but for the same amount of time. I got on the throttle sooner and harder (max accel .31g vs avg of .25g). Accel time was 8.66 seconds vs avg of 8.32 seconds. If I could add it all up into a single lap, I could have run a 1:51. But then, if horses had wings... Hope I didn't bore you to tears. ;-D

For the carousel, The best way a found for my car was to go a bit deeper in the corner by braking later and apex it more around 7;30 on your clock. It give me more speed on the next straight. For the turn #10, it's impressive how fast we can begin to turn in and trail brake it. Most of people apex too late and the result is not as good as a soon apex. I'm sad that my english is not good enough to explain exactly what a think a know about that track, but anyway, you are better and faster than me. Thank's again for your analyse. It was nearly erotic to read ! ha ha ha !!!

      Agreed! With fresh 80 treadwear (or slick) tires, I should be able to turn a sub 1:40 lap there. I have the Garmin Catalyst set to "Advanced Race Coach"...it's most talkative setting. It compiles data as I keep driving and it determines which particular way thru a corner was the quickest. Then it verbally instructs as I'm about to drive that particular area of the track. It takes some of the guesswork out of figuring out the quickest way around the track.

      At that time, I believe I only had the stock suspension camber maxed out in front….-1.7 degrees? Michelin Cup 2 tires. 180 treadwear.

    Whew! Nice times! I'm glad to see that my line is mostly the same as yours (albeit at a much slower pace). The only real differences I see are that your turn-in is later on 8 and you take a wider turn at 9. Otherwise, looks like I just need to pick up my pace. See you next season!

      Brian: I'd like to carry even more speed through 8, but as you're well aware, the track drops away after the apex. As it is, I'm using all of the track at track out...I don't want to find myself needing more track than exists there...and an early apex at the right speed will have you looking for that non-existent asphalt. Turn 9 is a different story. 2 years ago (when my Cayman S was understeering there), I needed to use (and liked) the inside line. Then I watched Ron's video so this year I started wider. It was OK. Then I rode w/ Bob P who makes more of a V out of it, that didn't work for me. I went back to the inside line, but not consistently. I like the inside best though. Track out from 8 and just stay over there. Use the compression in 9 to get great turning grip. Only down side is that the track flattens as you get near the apex so I feel like it might not work for some cars.

      Brian, I'd accept nice-ISH lines....even that's a stretch compared to my normal lines. I noticed that I was so focused on fun w/ the Canfields that my driving precision went in the toilet. As my pace picked up, I was often WAY wide of the inside edge of the track at the apexes and maybe 1x out of 3 I took turn 1 correctly. I didn't realize it until I saw Tim's videos (see them at Canner0001 on TH-cam). It would be embarrassing if it weren't such a good learning moment! ;-D

      Looking back at your comment...right! under 120...b/c I'm running with the Honda's (power/aero limited). typically I'm in the low- mid-130's on the straight. So, yeah...amazing to be turning 1:47's even w/ those 'slow' straight speeds.

    How planted does the Spyder feel through the high speed turns? Would you say you miss any of the rigidity of not having a cayman s coupe? Asking as I may switch to a Spyder from a cayman s

      Sorry for the late reply, Anthony. There's definitely no loss of performance from my Cayman S. The spyder is a very stiff car (as opposed to a Ferarri 458 Spyder...I noticed cowl shake on that car with the top down).

    it looks like you are pinching yourself into turn 2, should go a little wider into 2 to set up turn 3. You can for sure break a minute.

      Anthony: Good eyes. I agree. On the first two laps, I was definitely apexing early and that's not my normal line.       I'm glad you commented, Dr. Billy. Your comment enticed me to re-watch this video for the first time in well over a year. Since posting this video, I've been back to WGI for two more DE's w/ my 2021 718 Spyder (see videos on my channel). Watching this older video was eye-opening. It clearly demonstrates how inconsistent and imprecise my line was a couple of years ago. I'm clearly missing apexes, turn-in's, etc... I probably wouldn't have seen that had you not taken the time to comment. Thank you. :-D

      Joe, the Track Addict app on my iPhone uses info from the OBD2 port (via a module that plugs into the port and communicates with my iPhone via Bluetooth.

    Hi Joe - Nice driving. Couple of questions. What group are you running with? There was nobody there! What tires are you on and what was your target pressure? Lastly are you using the Porsche Track Precision App? How did you get the picture in picture on your older video? Thanks. Joe in NY. P.S. I just took possession of a Boxster GTS 4.0 and am a member of Lime Rock Drivers Club. My goal is to break the 1 minute barrier as well, but I'm wondering how much of a difference tires make, and if tires will make or break the issue then what to get. Anyways, thanks for sharing!       Hi Joe. I was at LRP with PCA NCR and in the black run group. I'm on Cup 2's and at LRP under those conditions (mid-50's, damp) I ran hot pressures of LF41#, RF37.5#, LR37#, RR36#. I'll admit that this is a little unusual. I'd typically run 37-38# hot all around to start with and then I'll usually my 'inside front' (i.e. RF on a 'clockwise' track) up to around 40# (it wear's more evenly and my temps across the tread are more evenly spaced from outside to middle to inside edge w/ inside edge being 10-12 degrees F hotter. I'm not using the Porsche Track Precision App...either I haven't figured it out or I did and didn't like it (can't recall). I'm using Track Addict. PIP was from when I used a old GoPro Hero 3. For some reason, I can't get it to work this season and I don't have the time to mess w/ it. FWIW: tires make ALL the difference....they're your only connection to the track. Not sure what you drove prior to your GTS, but learn the car, grab as much coaching as you can possibly get and then the speed/time will come naturally. ;-D

      LOL. I borrowed Dale's Catalyst and it did help me shave a little off my lap times. Even so, when I look at the video and telemetry from the comfort of my armchair, it's easier to be critical of my driving and know that I could be below 1:40 if I improve my driving just a little bit in about half a dozen places. I look forward to giving that a try next year. ;-D

    Nice driving, Joe! Take this with a grain of salt since your a few seconds faster than I can do, but I think you have a second or more between 2-3-4. Maybe for 2-3, try staying off the hump a bit and you might be able to carry more speed. Looks like you got a little loose at 3 that may have cost some time. Other than that, if you got that point by sooner on the straight, that would have helped too! CMS is so much fun! Happy motoring!

      Brian: I'm all ears when it comes to learning/trying different lines, different techniques, etc... I'll be the first to admit I'm not sure what my fastest way through 2-3-4 is. I feel like my car hasn't had the front end grip I'd like (i.e. its understeering), but I'll be the first to admit that it's part alignment, part driver. I play with different lines and haven't figured that section out yet (or 6, or 10-11, etc...). I learn so much from riding with others, listening to (and sometimes debating) driving critiques w/ others. Bottom line is this: I love dialoguing with others about the best line, technique, etc.. and sharing stats. It's a great way for all of us to become better at the hobby we love! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    This is by no means a how-to video. This was my first time driving Watkins Glen and only my fourth day of track driving.
