Hi guys! My name is Alex and I read a lot of books. I’m also very tall.
Welcome to Tall Guy Reads, a channel where I create book reviews, discussions, and other related videos discussing all things fantasy, sci-fi, & horror in literature and other forms of media. My goal is to help new and old readers alike find books and authors they will love and enjoy, as well as bring additional input into discussions around them. I hope my content can help readers sharpen their reading taste and end each day a little better than the last.
I love reading books that are popular in the community, but I also really enjoy trying as many authors and series I haven't read and may not be quite as well-known. I primarily read fantasy, sci-fi, and horror, but frequently enjoy diving into historical fiction and classic literature here and there as well. I am an avid book collector and book thrifter and when I come across great finds, I will be sharing them with the community.

Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons. BEST. HORROR. NOVEL. EVER.
Salem's What? Please!
Im Dracula when Harker realises he is a prisoner.... love it. And then sees Dracula climbing down the wall of the castle ... is like WTF. But in England Dracula was relentless going after the women
Stephen King is soooo overrated and boring.
If Stephen King is here. I AM OUT.
you have posted many books i will try to lisen to the books that you post here thanks
i dont agree with it i loved the 3 body problem i need to hear in audio dark forest
Salems lot is bad! The women are writen very poorly. The sexism is aweful. And it us way too long.repetativ. And the characters are surfefacelavel no deeped.
I enjoyed the two books that King and Straub wrote together. I know one is called Black House but the name of the other is escaping me even though I know I own both. They aren't in my top but I definitely enjoyed the books. There is a character based on the killer Albert Fish and he is honestly the scariest killer I have ever heard of. He may not have killed as many as others but just by the completely horrific life he lived and all the things he did in addition to killing. Just one extremely sick MF and their character version of him is pretty scary.
Salems Lot getting the recognition it deserves 🎉 its my favorite too
Salem's Lot for me is a close 2nd to Pet Cemetary as #1. Let's face it though, King has written MANY phenomenal stories.
Btw.... I've read your entire list and those are all absolutely amazing books, fabulous list 🤘🏻
It's a hard one to pinpoint because idk if it's technically horror or dark fantasy.... But mine is Clive Barker's Imajica. I read it when it first came out and many many times since. Barker is still probably my favorite writer, and that book is literally epic ❤️❤️❤️
jordan person is so fkn annoying holy fk
Salem's Lot is my favorite too❤
Can anyone recommend good psychological horror books?
King doesn't even sniff my top ten....but to each his own....
Richard Laymon is on par with Stephen king, try his books, island was a great one imo
What a collection
Hell yeah! Salems Lot as number 1! ❤
Thanks. I'm excited to see anyone talk about anyone but king. I'm so over him 😂😂😂.
On a side note , Tall Man, many thanks for the Shirley Jackson tribute; her short story “Man in the Woods” if you haven’t read it is one of the most terrifying arrangement of words I’ve ever EVER. witnessed ; from the beginning sentences which somehow shout “ Don’t go on!” but, of course, you do !
This is a fantastic presentation, thank you!
Tall Guy, I recommend Whitley Streiber's 1983 novel, "The Hunger." Like "'Salem's Lot," it applies a new twist to the vampire legend. Some of the images from it will follow me to the grave -- they don't call this stuff horror for nothin'!
Is telling us that the character Fitz(?) lasts the entire series a spoiler? Just sayin.
I love Salem’s Lot! Definitely one of my top SK books. The Exorcist is probably my favorite horror novel. I saw the movie first and it left a huge impression on me. I was maybe 10 and had a horrible case of the flu and it really freaked me out. I didn’t read the novel until I was in my 20’s and I thought it was amazing. Highly recommend the novel AND the movie.
By reason of insanity by Shane Steven’s . Scariest horror book I ever read
I'm the same way about reading. Fantasy is my favorite, but horror is a close second. Stephen king is usually who I read. I've read a few non Stephen king horror books, but to me Stephen King is top notch and if I want horror, he won't disappoint me. My favorite Stephen king horror book is pet semetary and my favorite non Stephen king horror book is how to survive your own murder. There's a middle grade horror book I like as well called Took, gives me Stephen king vibes but for older kids of course
Excellent list! Half the books you mentioned are in my personal top 10, including Salem's Lot. I applaud your inclusion of Swann Song and NOS4A2. Check out Hex by Thomas Olde Heuvelt. I just subscribed to your channel based on this video.
Same.
I stayed up until 2 am to finish reading the ship of destiny last night, and let me tell you, having finished these books, i want to wipe my memory so i can read them again for rhe first time. What an amazing trilogy. I came into ship of magic skeptical about it and all of my misgivings were completely unfounded. Im very emotional about it actually XD.
Read The Exorcist once when I was a junior in HS, even though my mother warned me about it. I had to sleep with the light on for the next three months while sharing a room with my younger sister! Over 50 years later and it's still the scariest, most unsettling book I've ever read.
The audiobook is amazing, it's read by the author.
Ghost Story is a masterpiece.
I'm going to be honest and say that when I hear a fantasy book is built on "themes and philosophy," that's a huge red flag for me. Without a modern understanding of science, which fantasy can't give. Most philosophy is just intellectual materbation. This is why sci-fi works better if that's your interest. I don't care what you have to say about human nature if you're frequently ignorant of the forces that shaped it. There are concepts you can explore from philosophy in fantasy worlds. But too often, it's way outside the scope of the genre.
Pet Cemetary is my favorite.
Great reviews of this series! Wish you had a spoiler review of this one.
Thanks for your recs!
100% correct on Salem's Lot being Kings best and thanks for recognizing Robert McCammon. He is such an amazing author. Only wish you added Clive Barker somewhere on your list.
This was very complete. Thanks!!
lol 20 years ago I had just finished all the song of ice and fire books… first time I had read fantasy since Tolkien as a teenager. I was living in Denmark for the year and saw the Malazan books in the English section of the city library… I was drawn in by the cover art and read a couple of chapters while sitting there and thought wow this is epic! But I didn’t read them then… flash forward 20 years to now and I started watching these booktuber vids for the first time… and here are ppl talking how it is the most complicated, hard to read series and I was like “Yes! I’m in!” Just finished Gardens of the Moon and loved it, but it’s great because I already know it’s a huge complete series and I need to finish it to really get it… and also there are vids like this to really examine it and discuss it! Good stuff, thanks 😊
Howling dark is really good i finally got a chance to read it this month
Always happy to see NOS4A2/Joe Hill love, I'm reading Heart Shaped Box currently and really liking it. Great list!
Those were both amazing books 🤗
Both are great!!
I prefered Heart Shaped Box myself.
Do I see Brian Lee Durfee's books on your shelf?
I just finished salems lot and I’m a big Stephen king fan but I was quite disappointed with the ending which was annoying since the rest of the book was amazing
The sample wasn't interesting to read. Also, does it not bother you that he lifted sentences from other books?
Great video! Subscribed to see where you’re going next.
Great collection. How do you cover/laminate your hardcovers?
You and I both agree. For me it's Well of Ascension as the best (incredible ending), The Hero of Ages as second best, and the Final Empire as the third.
Super cliché, but my absolute favourite book of all times is IT by Stephen King. What an incredible adventure, it will stay with me for my whole life.
I quit reading book 2 halfway through. Pretty much unreadable just like The Wheel of Time book 1. Who writes a chapter with 167 pages? Perhaps it was Ken Liu’s translation, but I just couldn’t push forward at the halfway point.
