@@vic772 thanks, just add a little water at a time, don’t over do it. It only takes a small amount to make it too wet so err on the cautious side. Mix can also be 2 sand one sharp one cement for roof work.

@@yp77738yp77739 hello, I had to repair a chimney few years ago and had to go back to do more couple tiles, eventually turned out to be the clay terminal sitting in the pot, so I have experienced this too. I assumed they were water tight prior to that but they can let water in. On that job i just removed a the pot as it wasn’t in use, and concreted the top, problem was solved. If it’s use don’t use the fire with a bucket over the top as it could cause dangerous fumes to divert into the house possibly. I’d get a different cowl for use on gas fire that won’t let water in.

@ Thanks for the advice and the safety warning, but yes the gas fire hasn’t been used for 20 years. If we remove the top and fit a concrete cap, does there still need to be a little ventilation for it to sweat (the roofer previously put waterproofing “cream” over all the brickwork) or can you hermetically seal it off completely. Thanks, we’ve been trying to solve this for about 15 years, luckily because it is open brick it doesn’t go mouldy or need constant redecoration, all it does is cause some white efflorescence which I periodically clear with lemon juice!

@ yea needs 2 air bricks fitted on top course of bricks to create air flow and ventilation in the cavity. Otherwise will create damp from condensation. Air bricks on opposite sides of chimney.

@@brianemery2119 no I don’t. On the joiner and corner pieces tap lightly and consistently till it’s through, then it wont split. The board itself doesn’t need pilots.

@@gherkinavoider4452 by a competent and experienced roofer should be 1/2 day to max a day. I’d price it at a day to allow for unlikely complications. We just repaired 2 done by dodgy roofer and did both easily in a day.

@@ryan2387 I didn’t do the soffit, just replaced fascia and gutter.

@@ryan2387 I didn’t add batten here as there is no gutter to hide it and would be visable from the front door right below. My other videos on bay epdm jobs I usually add a batten to existing fascia and have OSB go to end of batten and cut OSB flush to it. Creates a better more even drip edge that way. 👍

Yeah I hear you. See it sometimes. Up in Scotland sometimes they fully bed due to the costal weather I guess but in mainland UK not really necessary and a lot easier to do.

@@clairemcevoy4862 it’s probably lime in the brickwork to be fair but a small amount of cement for just fitting these brackets is a not an issue and sets 100x faster. It would be issue if it’s all pointed in cement/sand though, fair point.

@@GK-qc5ry only if done in dry conditions and good pressure is used to stick it down. Usually they come loose. A bitumen primer can also be used to make it last longer but again it has to be dry conditions.

Yeah good spot, I used a slate hook that that slate rests on which could have been placed higher. Fair point, but still water tight, these slates have 4 inch headlap which is more than enough, it’s now 3. Back in the day slating was 2 inch headlap, stripped many of those and they didn’t leak because of the 2 inch headlap.

yeah well you get some bad "roofers" out there and it is a bit of mind field I'm afraid. Good due diligence and reviews, recommendations, etc. is the way to go. Also the tray does tilt the right way here, you can add a batten on top of the rafters for it to sit on if needed to get the right angle.

@@davesalter that's very good to know. I was wondering if it was that. If just using straight pvc instead of the overlay one, is it still necessary? Also, how are the soffits usually attached to the wall? And how do you join the soffit and the fascia?

@@maltesefalcon56 I think it was around £250 ish materials, for labour/business costs end of it I’d advise get 3 quotes and don’t just go for cheapest but do due diligence and decide partly on instinct and company reviews etc.

It’s not rocket science mate, once battens are cut put it in against the wall and nail it as shown in the video. Cut the tray with tin snips, a saw, multi-tool, failing that use your teeth. Thanks.
