a documentary by Paolo Parmiggiani | Materia Films (2022)
The documentary is a journey into the discovery of movement and the fascination it evokes, driving the development of artistic and technological forms. The common thread of this exploration is animation-the ability that allows humans to represent what is alive or appears to be alive.
The journey unfolds across various realms: from Japanese Bunraku theater, where puppets are manipulated using highly sophisticated traditional techniques, to the cutting-edge frontiers of robotics, capable of interacting with humans or adapting to their surroundings. The investigation extends to the artifice of stop-motion, a now-classic cinematic technique, and culminates with the “Strandbeest,” kinetic structures animated by the wind, moving in harmony with nature.
Through the testimonies and stories of key figures from the visual and performing arts as well as scientific research, each chapter of the documentary reveals a fundamental fragment of what can be understood as animation-a realm where the boundary between the natural and the artificial, between the static and the dynamic, is remarkably thin.
This narrative invites reflection on how animation is not merely a manifestation of human ingenuity but also a tool to comprehend the world and its infinite possibilities.

It's definitely art, but it's not exactly life, there are more requirements for that. It's more properly an automaton that is wind-powered. That said it's still delightful art!
