I am a 41 year old straight male, with some queer fetishes (small boobs are as good as big boobs if the female wearing has any personality to speak of). I consider myself autodidactic. I am objective enough to see the bias. With that said... I saw Fight Club in the theater, with my mom. Call her on the phone if you have the nerve and don't believe me. I read everything I could of his at that point: So, Fight Club, Survivor, Choke, Invisible Monsters, Lullabye. I've read them all at least twice. I read Choke for the umpteenth time when I was working at Tractor Supply in Amenia, NY. It still makes me laugh in parts. That's hard to compete with, or betray. He's hit and miss after Haunted as far as I'm concerned. To say nice things though: Beautiful You made being homeless in Albany that much better. (They have some nice shelters there too if you happen to be around.) And Adjustment Day made my return from a third suicide attempt in Downtown Los Angeles in late 2017 all the easier to recover from. (Read that along with Annie Lowrey's Give People Money and you should get some kind of informed view of where America is, or could be headed in the next 4-10 years. Seriously.) And dismissing the bad ones, everybody writes junk sometimes; it's inevitable. I'd say he's our best heir from Kurt Vonnegut and could have been pushed out if a partial-generation of entitled, untalented, unwashed, lazy, unimaginative turds wearing Red Hats or something hatefully similar has their way and we stop having any conversations about books or art or really much of anything at all (besides the weather and how much people hate their jobs or how confusing the most basic cognitive tasks -- like seeing someone enter a store with a bag of items from somewhere else and socks-for-brains cashier can't figure out why you don't want his creepy-as-fuck fingers touching your items when he has no business to touch your items, unless he's ringing them up, like, because you're purchasing them from his store). I guess that's long enough. I'm procrastinating writing a story that will eventually go here: theradioandtheinternet.blogspot.com

Speaking of "The Membranes" with its plot twists, but not quite. Fond of the books that flip the switch at the very last moment and kind of force you to shake off all the notions that you've been hoarding all along the way, and make you rethink completely the concept and the reading process itself?! If by some miracle you've not read either of these two short stories- "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin or "A good man is hard to find" by Flannery O'Connor, I highly recommend reading either of them. Because these are the types of stories that turn you 180, stare at you, and then leave moonwalking simpering away.

Such an interesting list, added a bunch of them to my TBR and will read Tender is the Flesh next (was already on the list but your description of it and that last line really did it for me!), thank you so much! My recommendation is not a short book but it is a compilation of short stories - 253 by Geoff Ryman. It's about a subway train, its 262 passengers + the conductor. Super interesting and there's even a website for you to follow each passenger, the station and what is happening.

Just finished it. Took me about a week, which is one of the biggest compliments I can give it. It's much more consumable than some other books this long, in my opinion. It's a good story, and even when it lulls (in part 3 especially), the pacing seems intentional, to make a point, which I appreciated. Ushikawa made me laugh, the little insect. You gave a fair review, for sure, and I'm interested to check out that chapter you link, so thanks for that! It might save me the effort of re-reading 1984, haha. Have you read any other Japanese fiction, or watched any anime? This whole book felt just so non-western to me, which is refreshing in some ways, but almost "caricatured" in others... the romance stuff in particular. Lastly, do you have a take on what the "little people" are intended to represent philosophically or otherwise?

Hi Brandie. I was looking for recommendations on where to start with C.P. and TH-cam recommended your video. Honestly, after watching it, I’m not quite sure on where to actually start with him. You seem a bit disenchanted with his works, like that he started very high with Fight Club but everything after was of a lower quality/interest. I’d probably not put that copy of the secret with your other books - if it’s water damaged it may have mold spores (also might not) and that can spread to your other books (former librarian, we would cull all water damaged books to prevent this)

Some books I really want to read this fall are Autumn by Ali Smith, We Have Always Lived In The Castle by Shirley Jackson and Anatomy by Dana Schwartz - these are at least my priorities, I always stuff the tbr list especially in fall lol
