We're diving once again into the world of Beats of Rage with Beats of Rage Xtra. Essentially an update to the original game (same music, stages etc) but with some extra characters added.
The Original Beats of Rage came about because HomeBrew enthusiasts were sick of waiting for Sega to create a Streets of Rage 4, and the 2D beat-em up genre had pretty much died off with arrival of 3D games, so Senile Team decided to do something about it. Beats of Rage features characters from SNK Fighting Games but put into a scrolling beat-em up game, the levels pay homage to the original Streets of Rage and the music really fits the game. The collision detection is slightly off, which is expected when the the character sprites aren't from this genre, but it's still a really fun game.
The game was released on many formats including PC and XBOX, we are playing the Dreamcast version. It was released as part of the second Beats of Rage Collection disc called Beats of Rage Remix, over the coming weeks we will be playing other games from the collection and find out if any of these weird and wonderful creations are worth your time, and whether or not they stand up against the original Beats of Rage, which, in my opinion is a really excellent and well created game.
