Sailboat Chain Plate Inspection
We remove a stainless steel chain plate for inspection. It gets cleaned with a wire wheel and orbital sander to evaluate the extent of any corrosion. Then it gets reinstalled with new sealant. Check your chain plates to avoid potentially disastrous consequences!

Follow along as we remove a worn out sun cover on our headsail then replace it with adhesive-backed, UV-coated Insignia cloth.
Sailing a Pearson Rhodes 41 on Lake Ontario with S/V Kool Beans
มุมมอง 2K6 ปีที่แล้ว
On what could be the last warm day of the 2018 season, we meet up with Captain Jim on S/V Kool Beans to enjoy the sunshine, moderate south wind, and calm lake. We drop lines at Sodus Point, NY and sail along the south shore of Lake Ontario. Repair of a Forespar Telescoping Whisker Pole with Control Line
มุมมอง 7K6 ปีที่แล้ว
Follow along as we repair a neglected and non-functioning aluminum whisker pole. First, we remove the cast aluminum end fittings by drilling out rivets. That allows removal of the internal control line strut and its pulley. Next, the two extruded aluminum tubes are separated from one another. A hammer was needed due to some internal corrosion. New holes are then drilled and threads tapped for t...
The mast doesn't stand straight. It runs aft for downward sail🎉.Adjust your mast
"Is that really appropriate?" 😂😂 On a more serious note: Excellent instruction!
Great help - thanks!
rebed all deck hardware with marine butyl tape, flexes and won't leak and easy to remove if you need to do repairs etc.
Anyone know if you could coat the chainplate in some kind of sealing spray, like a laquer to protect it before reinserting it? I always worry that then you have an unknown chemical reaction with surrounding fibreglass etc. Sometimes things that are done with the best intentions can be devastating, but has anyone had experience with other anti-corrosion ideas?
Thank you for the great video with very useful tips as this will be my next project on my sailboat.
Great video, THANKS!! Guess what I'm doing tomorrow 🙂
I am beyond impressed with your DIY undertakings!!! well done sir (clapping)
Thank you very much for the video! Could you please share the website where you ordered the UV material or the brand? We are looking for the same type of thing, and as we are quite new to sailing, we are not sure what exactly to look for! ❤❤
Starting a refit on my boat and found this video to be one of the most concise clear how to videos on TH-cam. Quickly went to subscribe only to be disappointed to see this was the last video made. What a shame as this guy has a knack for DIY explanation and the person running the camera does excellent work.
interesting to see the decisions made on these old production boats. they were probably never expecting them to last as long as they have. I dislike the pockets. I'd much rather have two plates bolted around a bulkhead. Also I think the coverplate could be discarded and replaced with a standoff, say a block of wood epoxied to the deck. then water on the deck doesn't stand against the sealant. The chainplates on this boat are mounted so close to the hull side that you might as well have external chainplates, which will eliminate the possibility of the deck leak. (I think the bolts though the hull side won't be a risk of leak because they will be squeezing the hull side very tightly.
I'm just getting set to do this job. Thanks for sharing your many helpful tips!
amazing! thank you~
Your wife! Your shorts are inappropriate! Lmao! Good video!
Thanks fine job! I'm subscribed, I know what I wanted to know now very helpful.
Great video, thank you! Planning a tune up this winter and wonder if one could substitute carbon fiber tubing for the two internal components? Do you recall length and outer dimensions of the strut and innermost components?
Very helpful video. Thanks
You’re the man! This project has been nagging me for two years. Finally got on top of it today and did a similar rebuild following your video. Much appreciated 🙏
Very good and I wish you were here!
If those covers on deck really are aluminium, you really should replace them with SS. The galvanic corrosion between those two metals will definitely cause a failure.
I some cases griding it or brushing it with metal can work in metals that start corrosion..
Great to see the boat sailing again! I owned this boat from about 1999 until 2017 and sailed it throughout the Chesapeake Bay. I purchased it in Savanah, GA from an individual who sailed in the Bahamas for many years as . It is hull #26, built in 1964. I "upgraded" to hull #11 that was built in 1962. We're still cruising and racing in Annapolis, getting compliments about how pretty she is every time we go out!
I am a noob. I will never likely need to REPAIR a whisker pole, but I will likely use one (especially since I own one). You outstanding video, however, helps me understand HOW the darn thing works. Seeing it taken apart and repaired. is invaluable. By-the-by, your technique for filming was outstanding, thank you.
From an automotive mechanic, please never ever reuse cotter pins. They're dirt cheap and it makes no sense to risk it.
Thank you so much for walking through this tutorial! I don't know much about boats but your lesson added life to my dream.
thanks very helpfull i amnot paying anybody i will do my myself
Greetings, thanks for posting. Please accept a few suggestions. 1. the uv damaged sheave (white pulley) should have been replaced. 2. always coat stainless treads going into aluminum with Tef-Gel. 3. the anodized aluminum tube cuts could have been sealed with a metal spray paint. 4. the line that was used is too large of diameter for this application.
legend! good job!
I was able to successfully repair my whisker pole. Thank you so much.
Thanks! Very helpful for replacing control line.
Exactly what I needed. Thanks a lot.
thanks for the pole info i just got one and need to rebuild it, it isn’t corroded stuck just needs internal disengaging
What a great video - do you think its possible to convert a push button whisker pole to a line control pole?
I've a button pole and need to replace one end. I'd doubt a control line can be added, but happy to be wrong.
Thanks for sharing this. I'm contemplating doing this myself on a slightly smaller headsail than yours. Do you think a good quality domestic type sowing machine is adequate for the task? Thanks David.
like your video thanks on showing us how to check chain plates.
What size revivits did you use?
Great video...Thanks for taking the mystery out of it. I feel much more confident tackling this project during the off season.
Thanks for sharing! Very helpful!
Although you didn't show it, it looks like you shortened the small inner tube by the same amount that you shortened the corroded 2.5" tube. Is that correct?
Nice video for beginners. I agree, replace the bolts. I mark the thread location before loosening the turnbuckle...helps with keeping the same tension when putting it back together.
perfect for understanding how they work mechanically
Thank you perfect timing, just brought the pole home to replace the control line and clean it up a bit.
Great video !! Very helpful. We buckled the smaller diameter end in our last race. Based on your video we will attempt to replace it. Are you in Buffalo, NY ? I used to live there. That breakwater and light house looked familiar. We are in Thailand now. Much "warmer" (aka hot) and the water is more salty.
Great, well delivered!!! Thanks
This video well done, very instructive and really helpful. I have had leaking chain plates on my HR 31 Monsun for some time now and I've been dreading to do anything about it. Now the time has come... and I feel better prepared for it after having watched this video. Thanks!
Subscribed. Excellent video on the subject. Wish all the sailing/repair vids were this direct, concise, accurate. I am shopping for a boat, so thanks for covering a subject I find critical.
What make/model boat is that? Looks similar to a ‘67 Pearson Vanguard we once had. Thanks.
Thanks for the great video. I am building my own pole. I have a doubt. How do you prevent the pole from pulling out more than you want? And how do you pull it back in? I was planning on a second control line, antagonist to the first one. Does it make sense?
Nice shots. Do you you still have the PR41?
nice rebuild...maybe I skipped part where you apply anticorrosion between all dissimilar metals (for this probobly lanacote is fine)...so you won't have to redo the project after a few seasons sailing
Thanks - and yes, that's a good thing to keep in mind. I used Tef-gel for all threaded connections between dissimilar metals.
