How To Refactor Your Brain - Interview With Dagna Bieda
Software engineers are no strangers to tech debt and the power of refactoring.
But what if you could refactor your brain?
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dagna Bieda to go over just that! We discussed some awesome passages from her new book, Brain Refactor!
From burnout to imposter syndrome to all things software engineering, hear about how you can clean up some of the legacy code that controls how you think.
Thanks for this awesome chat, Dagna!

    Not sure I follow your logic, you've done: filter = filterBuilder.Empty; filter &= filterBuilder.Eq("Name", "no match here"); filter |= filterBuilder.Eq("Subscribers", 1000000); When all you had to do is: filter = filterBuilder.Eq("Subscribers", 1000000);

    I got an opportunity to become a dev when I was 40. I had previously worked as a "technical reporter" (kinda like a data analyst), which included lots of SQL, Excel/VBA. But it's still not quite the same as working as a developer. My personal take on it is: - you can become a developer at any age. - having no senior acting as a mentor to you will suck big time and set you back 2 years minimum. - working inside a team will benefit you greatly, even if you're not a very social person. Working alone on projects will slow down your learning curve. - working short missions (2-4 months max) will make you progress the fastest because you'll discover new tools and new ideas at a faster rate. - longer missions, up to 1 year, can be good too. But if you ever spend more than a year on a single project, you should at least ask yourself if you're not trading your learning opportunities for comfort. - once you're in a developer position, I recommend you stick with your programming language probably for 4 years minimum, rather than hop onto a different language. Your knowledge needs to grow deep before growing wide. Better become seasoned in 1 language rather than becoming a beginner at several languages. After you've become experienced, you'll be able to reuse your depth of knowledge within the new language.

    Bottom line, its never too late to get started. I went from window treatment in retail to software developer at 33. I have trained many people starting out over 40 years old in software development by using what is called "work out of class" which many companies offer. Work out of class tends to go for six months, evaluate and continue or stop. If you work for a company with software developer and want to get into software development, first take some of Dev Leader courses and if this seems like a good path ask if your company offers work out of class. Another piece of advice, you may like to program with Python but if the majority of work sought after is C# and SQL-Server but not fond of that path get into it else you will not be employable in your area.

    I think you have a very mature attitude about this and you are an expert communicator. I think it needs to be said though that there is an enormous amount of bias that some interviewers bring when they conduct an interview. There have been many interviews where I know within minutes that this person is more interested in finding a reason to fail me than in being hopeful about recruiting talent. It can be rooted in age, race, or ego. It can be rooted in credentialism and where you went to school or what brands are on your work history. In smaller companies it can be because a person does not want to have to compete with you. I think it’s worth calling this out because it seems to be becoming more and more prevalent in tech.

    • @DevLeader
      @DevLeader 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@verbal33 this is unfortunate but true regarding bias existing. I can speak from my interview loops at Microsoft that we actively try to challenge each other and reduce bias as much as we can. Nobody is perfect, but we try to be aware of this. But the reality is across the industry there will always be situations where this happens (unfortunately). And there are also interviewers that DO look to actively fail people and it's super weird. I've experienced it before myself.

    Great video. How do you integrate BenchmarkDotNet into an existing web solution? I have a web application solution with several projects making up the various business and data layers. How would I test the performance of a method call in a business layer from the web app layer to the data access layer, for example?

    • @DevLeader
      @DevLeader 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The more you try to cover with a benchmark, the less consistent the results become just because there's more margin for error along the way. But there's no tricks required to do this in BenchmarkDotNet! It'll benchmark and measure anything you put into the benchmark method. If you need to test literally from the web server taking the call to the time it responds, you need to run the server in your setup method and your benchmark methods can make local web requests to it. The complexity of doing this though is very very very little to do with BenchmarkDotNet -- all of the complexity comes from if you can easily stand up an entire functional test service and tear it down in a repeatable way 🙂

    This chick trying to become an engineering influencer despite never having a job in the industry, having no formal education, and a portfolio that's as basic as they come is the most annoying thing on software-linkedin right now.

    Those interviews are crazy. I had one today and I've been a backend dev in ruby for the past 10 years. I got into an interview that was 3h long and the first question was to implement a data structure in JAVA. I haven't seen JAVA since my CS classes days in UNI. Then I had a ruby question for the next 2 hours that were not specific to code, but just seeing If I could apply recursion. I haven't done it in years and I did not remember it plus the stress. Even the interviewer said that he had not used one in 4 years. Great dude, he could not let me pass and I understand it. I need to have the secret handshake down with ds and algos. The industry is not fair now, but you must do the work to keep up. The take out is, that you are not a bad developer nor the interview reflect on your person.

      @@SCBiscuit13 thanks for also sharing your experience! 100% doesn't mean you're a bad dev. Interviews are a unique scenario that you need to practice... And I'm hopeful that interviews some day better align with real software engineering work. Wishing you success! 💪

    Great positive outlook! It''s always rough to explore all the dimensions of the abilities of a person to solve complex problems in a short amount of time. Continuous learning and growth is the most important thing

    More basic concepts and introduction like this stuff please. Would like the basics on how to deploy a basic single page website or test report html.
