In this video, I take on the challenge of 3D modeling and printing The Jackal’s Rifle prop from the 2024 series. With no official dimensions and only screenshots as references, this project pushed my CAD and 3D printing skills to their limits. Watch the full journey, from modeling struggles to final assembly, and see how the iconic prop comes to life. If you’re into 3D printing, prop design, or...

The worst part of this show is the actor keeping his head off of the cheek rest, and complete lack of recoil. Other than that, it was entertaining.

Nicely done! I dunno how much this would help, but the original design was based on a simple .22lr bolt action rifle. If the interior isn't of high priority, you can download one of the many free available bolt action rifle model online (i've seen Kar 98k models before for historical props, but there are many other options. Just remember to get rid of the firing pin when printing), download a .22lr rifle snapcap round model, scale the ammo for the Kar 98k model down to match with the .22lr model, then scale the rest of the rifle model down with the same ratio. Get rid of the wooden stock, trigger guard, bolt flag safety, gas deflector, any details not on the Jackal model, create a new custom stock and bolt cap that fits the aesthetic for the Jackal rifle and voila! Of course, this means you won't get the satisfaction of creating your own Jackal prop, but if you're looking for a prop that can eject shells for cinematic scenes, then it's a less herculean task (still need multiple prints to get the tolerance right tho)

I think you did and excellent job! I saw the original film as a child and had wanted a working version all my life. I even had a custom gunsmith try and recreate the films rifle to no avail. The gunsmith just really didn't understand what I was going after, even with my explanation and reference pix. I was able to create a close version using a heavy barreled Keystone Crickett .22 single shot action and a carbon fiber stock tube stock with a AR15 collapsable butt pad as the butt stock. It looks pretty close, although a bit heavy with the bull target barrel. If I were to do it over again, I would use a regular Keystone Crickett and thread the barrel to accept a faux suppressor.

I'm sure you thought of this but the one thing you could have gotten extremely accurate absolute measurements from was whatever rifle round this rifle chambered. Then everything would have been extrapolating the dimensions and sizes in ratio to it. Maybe their were no clear shots of it or they never mentioned what caliber the round was, or maybe you could have picked a common rifle round and started from there.

A big fun of the original 1971 book and 1973 movie adaptation and having built perhaps the only shooting replica of the rifle that actually hides in a crutch, I was waiting to see if somebody would take on the new series prop rifle emulation. I also built mine thoroughly researching the book and movie frame by frame for any clues. I know the challenges….but it was true joy to plow through the problems and set backs. I documented my journey in a playlist on my channel with 40+ short videos of the progress. I congratulate you for your similar creative spirit and fortitude. Here is my most recent update of the rifle, making it look even more like the original. The second wind came to me after having watched the new series, although I doubt they have made real shooting rifles…. Cheers friend! th-cam.com/video/5uWCkLI0vqY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=KmuMVqYYibiIAr1-

piece of advice: whenever designing a firearm, real or prop, ALWAYS start the design around the dimensions of the ammunition. if the show is like the movie, the caliber and chamber is .22 long-rifle. the industrial standard dimensions for that round, like any other round, are easily researched.

THIS! many hours went out of the window because i designed and printed from the outside in instead of the opposite! Remember that 3D printed pieces shrinks and expand ALOT. Not to mention if you plan on post processing a part for reinforcement or even a simple paint job, scale your part down by .5mm or even 1mm. Your prop tolerance should be loose to compensate for any additional material to be added.

That looks sick! I think you did VERY well on the dimensions. for a 1st version it seems very usable. What would be cool is if you or someone else can figure out how to make it launch projectires. Maybe like airgun balls or thinner off brand nerf darts. Tho honestly, thinking about it and the small space you have seems to be a rather difficult task.

It would be cool to see someone like Brandon Herrera make one. But I doubt anyone could 3D print an actual working version of it. Maybe you could do it with a small caliber with a titanium printer. Looked he used a 300 blackout in the show. Even with a subsonic load that's still a lot of pressure on plastic components.

From a story perspective, 3D printing a gun is a great concept, and recreating a mockup for a video is a cool idea. But it should end there, NEVER EVER TRY THIS for anyting else. 3D printer filaments or resins will never stand up to the preasure requirements of combustion. Just throwing that out there because you know some silly will try this for real and end up injuring themselves or someone else.

I haven't seen this particular adaptation, but I have RE'ed and built cad models of firearms based on pictures and calculations and understanding of the underlying theory. This is usually how this process goes, but there's usually a few critical tolerances, and the rest of it doesn't matter. I'd probably try getting an aluminum or carbon fiber tube off amazon so you don't have to print barrel components. The original movie used a pad from a crutch as a stock. Could also use crutch tubes or use those for model dimensions.
