My Lancair 4P canopy door window blew out over crater lake OR at FL270. I landed in Lakeview, OR. And Tom with Lake County aviation fabricated an internal patch using an old Cessna window panel. we used safety wire, some acrylic glue and epoxy.... I pulled the fire wall disconnect and can fly unpressurized. You can see the window repair at 2:09 minutes. It was pretty bumpy so the video bounces ...

    That's pretty awesome performance but near 1500° EGTs and 380° CHTs is pretty high. Anything over 350 will accelerate wear on those motors.

    Are you concerned about icing encounters with the Lancair IV? Or will it handle some ice relatively okay?

    • @johnbohn4760
      @johnbohn4760 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ice is always a concern. It's a high performance wing profile. Having said that I have flown in relatively high amounts of icing. I collected about 3/4" on approach to Big Rapids MI a few weeks ago. I kept my airspeed up. I've been flying this plane for about 13 years now and have become a pretty good weather man like most IFR pilots.

    Hi John, what do you get KTAS wise in calm winds at altitude at peak power. I've seen people advertise 290ktas at 75% power with IV-Ps. Is that realistic? Thanks.

    • @johnbohn4760
      @johnbohn4760 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Calm winds at 70% power I can I am able to fly at 250 knots TAS....FL220 and above. LOP engine approx. 16GPH. 108 gallons fuel. If I pull the power back to around 60% I maybold to achieve approximately 230 knots TAS and about 14GPH fuel. As the fuel goes down to half tank I'm able to get a few more knots speed.

    Hello I'm building a Lancair Super ES with a TSIO-550-E. I have a question about the turbo air intake. I've seen people just put filters on the turbos, but there are hoses on this one. Do you have any pictures of the full intake or the owners contact information so I could contact him about the intake system?

    • @johnbohn4760
      @johnbohn4760 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm the owner! The lower cowl which obviously is not shown in the video has a built-in air filter where air is prefiltered that goes into the turbo. My plane...and all Lancair 4p's have a filter like mine...in case the filter is plugged with ice an Alternate air door opens and air is drawn into the turbo from air around the lower cowl.

    All the Garmin videos I've seen, that's the first time I've seen it configured like a six pack. I love it that way; far more intuitive than tape. Good for you.

    • @johnbohn4760
      @johnbohn4760 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Burke yeah it had tape and I change the preferences to steam gauge Style. After a couple thousand hours it's hard to change to tape. I've learned a lot more about this g3x equipment since this video. It's got a lot of functionality I really like it.

    • @rufusprime99
      @rufusprime99 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been watching a lot of flying vids. I am warming up to the tape. Plus on my standard shift VW, I can look at the analog speed gauge for shift points, or set up a number display for speed. The number display is faster. Look, bam, got the number. The gauge takes an extra second to process what the gauge is showing. What does bother me is stuff MOVING and changing (terrain) behind a tape or steam gauge display. I find it distracting. That is one thing I like about the ProLine 21. The PFD is the PFD, no fussing, no mussing, just business. Do your custom displays elsewhere, LOL. I probably would not use the terrain feature unless I was really in some soup and had serious terrain to deal with. I do like synthetic vision on takeoff though.

    • @2Phast4Rocket

      For those of us who grew up flying flighter sim, we are used to the tapes. Had to relearn how to read the steam gauges when getting our license

    • @codmott286
      @codmott286 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      there is nothing at all intuitive about gauges. Each one has to be identified individually and examined in totality to determine if parameters are correct. You cant multi-task with gauges. Thats why tape is superior, with a single glance your mind can process multiple parameters due to their linear representation. Consider a series of gauges representing oil pressure, engine temp, fuel level etc. As long as you see "all green" you know you're good. With gauges you have to study each one to make sure the needles are in the right place.
