What is positivism?
Positivism is closely associated with the scientific approach. It is a powerful mode of thinking for dealing with the world, which has been widely adopted in many areas of study. In this video, the fifth in the traditional model of social research playlist, I discuss Auguste Comte’s original conception of positivism.

The independence of science and philosophy
Philosophy and science seem to be closely bound. Where scientists search for the truth, philosophers often try to determine what truth is. But you can be a researcher without knowing any philosophy, and philosophical debates may not impact how we approach specific research projects as much as people may at first presume. In this video, the fourth in the traditional model of social research play...
The split between researchers and actions
Researchers aim to determine what is the case. But once they have figured out what is most likely true, what is supposed to happen next? And who is supposed to do it? In this video, the third in the traditional model of social research playlist, I discuss the roles of researchers and other stakeholders within a traditional research model.
Why the rise in lung cancer cases?
In this playlist, I am examining an approach for studying the social world. To set the context for this discussion, it is good to keep in mind other models of how research is conducted. In this video, the second in the traditional model of social research playlist, I briefly review the case of how researchers determined a link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer.
A traditional model of social research: An Introduction
Qualitative research studies the social world. In this playlist and the next, I will examine different perspectives on studying the world. Over the next seven videos, I focus on a traditional model of research, a model associated with positivism. To set the context for our discussions, in this video, I present a three-part model for thinking about the different aspects of our world that we coul...
The Value of Qualitative Description
In this final video in my Qualitative Description playlist, I discuss some of the advantages of qualitative description as a methodological approach, including how it can connect with other methodological approaches. I will also review some of the limitations of this approach. Link to The Value of Qualitative Description in Health Services and Policy Research mentioned in the video: www.longwoo...
Aiming to Produce Accurate Descriptions
It may seem that scientific research should come up with accurate descriptions of what it is describing. For several reasons, there are no perfect or complete descriptions of social phenomena. That does not mean that all descriptions are equal. While never getting to a perfect description, in this sixth video in my Qualitative Description playlist, I discuss that researchers aim to produce accu...
Statement-Close Analysis: Part 2 - Results
In this video, the fifth in my Qualitative Description playlist, I finish off discussing the use of statement-close analysis in qualitative description by looking at how researchers can stay close to their data in terms of their results.
Statement-Close Analysis: Part 1 - Reading the Data
One of the unique aspects of qualitative description projects is the level of analysis it uses. I call it statement-close analysis. There are two different senses I see the analysis being statement close. The first is in terms of the reading of the data. Here qualitative descriptions focus on the information content that participants are most likely trying to communicate. Margarete Sandelowski ...
Aspects of Our Social World
Qualitative description projects aim to describe aspects of our social world. So what does that mean? What are some of the characteristics of the social world that influence the status of the things you hope to describe. In this video, the third in my Qualitative Description playlist, I look a little closer at what I mean by describing aspects of the social world.
Methodological Approaches
In defining qualitative description, I said that it is a methodological approach. In this video, the second in my Qualitative Description playlist, I look a little closer at what is a methodological approach and how they relate to a research project that you plan to conduct.
Qualitative Description: An Introduction
Over the next seven videos, I introduce qualitative description as a very useful methodological approach that can meet the needs of many people who are interested in using qualitative data, especially in applied context. In this video, I offer a definition of qualitative description. In the next five videos, I explore different aspects of this definition so that we are clearer about the intent ...

Recruiting participants for a research interview (7/8)
Interviews are a great way of creating data for a project. This data is created by a researcher directly engaging with participants. The only problem is that if you have no participants, you have no data. Recruitment is central then to the viability of interview research. It may even be the part of your project you will spend the most time doing. In this video, the seventh in my Conducting Semi...
Developing interview questions (6/8)
Questions are a key part of any interview. Semi-structured interviews combine predetermined questions with questions that are generated during the interview. These pre-determined questions are a crucial part of your interview guide. In this video, the sixth in my Conducting Semi-Structured Interviews playlist, I will give you some tips on developing interview questions and an interview guide.

Sort of. Our understanding of causal relationships (say smoking and lung cancer) stems from Sir Isaac Newton and his conception of cause and effect, and Descartes and how he sought to make sense of it philosophically. So while medical researchers do not evoke their philosophical case with every published paper, they nonetheless rely on previously established epistemological premises. I would hazard to argue that many mathematicians are implicitly neoplatonists on the grounds that they believe are searching for and discovering objective truths. Not so relevant to this discussion, but nonetheless important to epistemology and ethics and the current culture wars, is the distinction between Truth and Meaning. Take the two statements: - a cup of water is 80oC - the same cup of water is hot. The first is a fact, the second is a subjective statement - that is, a statement of what the cup means to the person. Both are related but have different purposes. Unfortunately, too much emotion has been spilled has been spilt.
