I was invited by the Marcus Wallenberg Laboratory for Sound and Vibration Research at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm to give an online seminar about MEMS microphones. I called it “20 Years of MEMS Microphones - from 2001 to 2021”. It included a brief look into the history of MEMS microphones from my own personal perspective, as well as a look at the MEMS microphone landscape in 2021: manufacturers, trends, performance levels, and so on. The seminar took place on April 28th 2021. Here it is, bloopers and all...

An unofficial (company internal) promotional video for the microphone that went by the development name Tufnel (for obvious reasons...). I didn't make this video, nor do I own any kinds of rights to it, but this is too much of a gem to be kept hidden in archives. I was, however, one of the people working hard to make the microphone happen.

    Hi Mikko, it's a longshot you'll read this comment, since some time has passed since the creation of this video. I enjoyed reading the guidelines from Infineon to which you (or your company) have allegedly contributed. Not all MEMS mics come with gaskets or silicone acosting isolation. I can't seem to find any off the shelf products for low quantities (<50), perhaps you know some DIY solution or some business that sells them?

    Hi Sir I have an question about the polarity of mems microphone. May I understood, the diaphragm close to back plate then polarity is positively, the diaphragm far way back plate then polarity is negatively, right?

    • @Mosomic
      @Mosomic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, It's not quite so. If a microphone receives a sinusoidal signal, the output signal of a non-inverting microphone will rise when the incoming sine wave is on a rising slope. When the instantaneous input pressure decreases (i.e. it's on a falling slope), the instantaneous signal level in the output of the microphone decreases also. For an inverting microphone, the output signal is on a falling slope when the input is on a rising slope, and vice versa. In other words, for a non-inverting microphone, a positive peak in the incoming sine signal corresponds with (occurs at the same time as) a positive peak in the output. For an inverting microphone, a positive peak in the incoming sine signal corresponds with a trough in the output signal. It's a bit complicated to explain this without drawing. I hope what I wrote above makes sense. Cheers!

    • @林圓紹
      @林圓紹 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mosomic Thank you for your feedback. I understood what you mean. And My other question is, what design difference between non-inverting mic and inverting mic? I seem almost bottom port mic is non-inverting mic but some of top port mic is non-inverting others are inverting. So I don’t know why?

    • @Mosomic
      @Mosomic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@林圓紹 The polarity depends on the sound sensor system and whether or not the ASIC inverts the signal. The output of a capacitive MEMS sound sensor is inverted. To create a non-inverting microphone, the output of the capacitive sensor must be inverted in the ASIC. Let me quote 'The MEMS Microphone Book' (chapter 8.4): ""The movement of the capacitor plates in relation to each other causes the capacitance to change and, based on the equation above, the voltage changes inversely. The capacitance is inversely proportional to the height of the membrane - back-plate gap; thereby, the overall output voltage is directly proportional to the gap. In other words, when the membrane moves from its resting position closer to the back-plate [i.e. the incoming sound pressure sine wave is in its positive portion], the capacitance is increased, and the output voltage becomes smaller. When the distance between the plates increases, the voltage increases." (You can find out more about the book at www.mosomic.com)

      @@Mosomic That's somewhat sad to hear given the fact it must have taken such a long time to create the series! But I suppose this may be due to the very nieche nature of the topic... I am working on a research project which investigates the properties of a very fast circularly spinning microphone. As this is a very untypical use case of a microphone the plentiful information provided by the series was very useful indeed :) I didn't initially notice an improvement while watching the series since I found the quality quite consistent, however, I just rewatched some of the first episode and noticed there is a big improvement indeed! For the moment I feel like I have gathered enough information in order to continue with the initial considerations regarding the research project, but as soon as I get more specifically into the implementation of the apparatus I will certainly keep your book in mind! Thank you!

In any case, the majority of the contents of the series have a long shelf life so I think the videos will find their viewers over time. But you're right, they took a lot of effort! Your project sounds very interesting. Sounds like wind noise may be a problem for you..? Thanks again for the feedback!

I will certainly make sure to recommend your video series to anybody who is working on a project in the same area :) Yes, wind noise will indeed be a problem, as well as motor noise and insane forces acting on the microphone (we intend to spin the microphone at up to 60k rpm). We will probably break a few microphones along the way, but something like this has never been done before, so the results will be interesting :) Also, I have good news, my university will almost certainly buy a copy of your book once it is released :)

    Total respect for the master♥ As a common mortal consumer and a musician I have a question for you: even if it's a chimera nowadays to reach the top audio quality levels of masterpieces like the "old" 808 or Lumias, can I find out there in the market a recent smartphone that implements a decent mics that are able to support hi SPLs like in a live concert/rock music festival environment without distortion issues? Are the new Android Nokia 7, 8 or 9 Pureview (with Ozo technology), or what other brand/model you could know, a valid deal to looking for buying? Thanks in advance and keep a good work!

    • @Mosomic
      @Mosomic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Christian, I don't know of any outstanding (in the way the Lumias were) sound capturing phones out there in the market right now. You're less likely to find great microphones in more budget-conscious products (like many of the current Nokias, for example) than in higher-end products like the iPhones. The OZO spatial system is a great feature but it doesn't say anything about the quality of the microphones. If someone reading this has any tips on which models to check, please share your advice!

    Great video! I am interested in manufacturing techniques to test for leaks in the microphone seals. Do you have any recommendations for seal testing in manufacturing? I've heard of techniques that involve pressing foam against the mouth of the channel while making before/after SPL measurements. Is there any merit to these "open channel/closed channel" techniques, or are there other ways to directly detect leakage? I'd prefer to avoid more indirect performance measurements that could have multiple root causes.

    • @Mosomic
      @Mosomic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Scott, Thanks! I'd say measuring the frequency response (or just sensitivity at a relatively low frequency) of the microphone would be a good way to detect leaks. The open/closed channel technique could very well work too, depending on the device the microphone is in, but I have no real-life experience of it. Cheers, Mikko

    What mic are you using in this video?

    • @Mosomic
      @Mosomic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I used the Rode SmartLav+. I chose it to make the editing of the videos as easy as possible: I connected it directly into the camera so the sound and picture were always in the same file and automatically synced. Getting to the result you hear did require a fair amount of post-processing though, and it is still compromised (the quality is affected also by the properties of the mic input in the camera, my beginner-level skills as a person talking into a microphone, as well as other factors). For future videos (when I'm not producing a 9-hour set of material...), I may go for something else, possibly something like a Rode NTG4 super-cardioid (i.e. not a lavalier mic). Cheers, Mikko

    Can you decipher spoken words with out vocal sound

    • @Mosomic
      @Mosomic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Simon, There are bone conducting or skin conducting microphones that can detect the vibrations of your throat or bones. They are used in very loud environments to enable, for example, capturing a fighter pilot's speech despite the ambient noise. They may enable sensing spoken words even if the actual sound is very quiet or practically inaudible. I'm not sure which would be better for this, a microphone or an accelerometer. It could also be possible to place a small microphone inside the mouth to capture quiet speech spoken "internally"..? With both of these methods, it will probably take a certain amount of practice and skill for the person to be able to "speak" inaudibly but so that a microphone can detect the speech or vibrations. Achieving a decent word error rate is probably very challenging. Sensing skin vibrations could be possible also with optical vibration detection systems. What kind of an application do you have in mind?

      @@Mosomic I was just wondering if you could hear people speak without any audiosounds do the sounds of the air going through your windpipe and larynx provide enough information to decode phonems in theory. Weird times !

      Hello Mikko, much appreciated for tutorial video. However, I notice the JEDEC spec for tumble test is not correct. JESD22-B100B is for physical dimension.

      Thanks for your sharing first, the video is very helpful to learning everything of microphone; however, the section of RF immunity is too short lead to not enough to know how to implement mesurement. Any possible to share more information with test? Anyway, I appreciate that you sharing the knowledgy of microphone and wish you everything well. :)
