    This is the first of your videos I have watched and I have questions. First, only 774 subscribers? How is that possible? Only 109 views? Only six likes? Is this an outgrowth of this weird timeline we're still stuck in? And two years since you told your last story? Surely, I think, you must be itching to tell more. Even if it's only for the benefit of a single insomniac crank. We moved last fall, which is of no note, except that I had to leave behind a beloved maple that we planted over twenty years ago. It grew straight and tall, a beautiful creature, my son, towering over the house, and home to squirrels, birds and bugs. It writhed with fury in thunderstorms. It shook with mirth when casting its shadow on the back wall of the house in an early July evening breeze. The soulless clods who bought the house just cut it down. It's a pile of sawdust now. The blue jays will no longer sit in its top branches, yelling for peanuts. The squirrels will no longer leap from the deck railing to the lower branches when they see me open the door. I predict the clods will install an above-ground pool in its place, or maybe a trampoline that will get used twice, when their kids discover smart phones and do whatever kids do today on social media. And when I heard the idea of an eruption in this opera, I thought, this grand opera I'm going to write about the vengeance of the gods on these benighted fools will surely need an eruption, but nothing short of Krakatoa will do. My question to you: What should the first note be? I'm thinking B flat but I'm open to suggestions. B flat always has a cataclysmic vibe to me.

    I enjoyed this very much. I ran into the Casadesus situation when I researched a murder mystery (maybe by Elliot Paul?). I had heard of Casadesus because my mother took me to hear him conduct when I was a teenager. The novel mentioned two of the organization's works. Not too long ago, I researched the works mentioned in the novel, and found out the sprious nature of some of them, as well as a recording (maybe of one of the genuine pieces). Earlier, I had heard of the reason resaaerchers went after "Mozart's #37" because there were so few recordings listed of it in Schwann. "Oh, it's just not as good as the others." But the argument was made that the piece was too late to be an artistic stumble, so everyone was relieved to find out its spurious nature.

    I think Paul McCartney’s Christmas song is the absolute worst! When you factor in his song writing ability then it makes that atrocity of a song even more egregious.

    I’m with you on the Christmas Shoes song. Over the top with the sentiment and just awful! Another one I don’t like is 2000 Miles by the Pretenders. It’s just really Whitney and cheesy 80s. I do enjoy however any Christmas songs from the Acapella group Straight No Chaser. Their Christmas albums are always amazing!

    We learn the minuet as a form within symphonies that evolved long after the minuet. So we see what a minuet became, and learn little about its place in music history. See ‘Music in the Galant Style’ 2007

    • @ConductorBruce
      @ConductorBruce 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point! Of course this video focuses on the 3rd movement of symphonies as Minuets, starting with the standardization that Mozart and Haydn helped usher in. I even say, "what we think of as a minuet TODAY is...." But there is a LONG history of nearly all forms that goes way back into various influences. The minuet actually proceeds the gallant style as well, technically. Sounds like you're enjoying digging into history of forms--there's a lot to discover there. Enjoy!

    My personal performances have tended towards that sort of flattened features mainly as a side effect of the level of concentration needed for orchestral playing. Yet I've noticed I'm more animated in the videos of say, Wind Quintet performances.

    • @ConductorBruce
      @ConductorBruce 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting, Nick, especially that you say it has more to do with the nature of the music. You don't think that it's just a different expectation/set of rules/norms that we (perhaps subconsciously) have for orchestral playing--i.e. be less expressive, don't draw attention, etc?

    • @nickuhlig3609
      @nickuhlig3609 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ConductorBruce it's entirely possible! You've got more space to take up in a chamber setting, physically and in terms of presence/audience perception. It's hard to imagine how 4 horns could move in a way that's both noticeably expressive to the audience but won't lead to a bunch of collisions with stands, for example.

    • @ConductorBruce
      @ConductorBruce 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nickuhlig3609 That makes sense, of course, Nick. And I don't want to suggest that musicians should be moving excessively (WOW--that's a subjective term, huh), but I also think sometimes we allow musicians in orchestras (and any large ensemble) especially in the US, to "check out" from the visual experience an audience member has. It comes back to this idea, which I've talked about a couple of times that concerts aren't meant to be auditory-only experiences, but visual as well. But in the orchestra/wind ensemble world, we often seem to think the only visual need is conformity and (dare I say) anonymity, which I don't think is necessarily good for connecting to the audience.
