How To Backwash/Drain a Swimming Pool Step-by-Step Instructions
This video is to help pool owners on their journey to maintaining their own pool.
This is an informative video to walk through how to backwash a pool to clean the filter or just to drain some water down.
This specific system is a Hayward variable speed pump with a Hayward Sand filter. The backwash line on this pool is flexible, not hard pipe, so we have to pull it out to run this process. Some systems may not have cut-offs on the backwash line.
While other equipment may look different, the process is still the same.

This pool is located on the sound front. In December, a storm hit and caused waves to crash into this pool. When we came to open the pool in May, it was ruined. seaweed & barnacles covered the walls. Thick sand and even fish were living in this pool. We drained, cleaned, and scrubbed the barnacles off this pool.

I had that one and I hate the new one without quick disconnect!!!! Ugh.
Where is the other end of the hose? Is it connected to something or just hanging over the pool? Natural suction?
I've tried alot of ways to remove algae from the bottom of my pool. The moat easiest and cheapest way was to use a garden hose and siphon it. It causes a natural vacuum without stirring the water. Sure some water is lost but is so much easier.
Followed these instructions but there is no suction on the skimmer… didnt work for me
I just installed one, but I am confused about the blue ring on the skimmer. It floats to the top, no matter the distance the basket is at in the water. Is the basket supposed to be below water level an inch or two like yours? I thought the basket would sit about the water level.

Good work. Without a protective fluid layer, the stain quickly returns. Apply a coating of automotive wax as soon as it's been cleaned and dried. I use Turtlewax brand from Walmart.

I hate that once your filters get full, all that back into the pool and make it all cloudy
@josechavez8636 that is why you don't vacuum this on filter, you vacuum it on waste so it goes out the backwash line

Because in the spring, when opening a pool. Always like that. In the winter, the pool pump turned off.

Hello, when you are on waste is water flowing out of the backwash line? Double check that you have prime in your pump.
My blue part wont attach to the wall mount thing my thing a tad bigger how do i get the right size

Hi! I have used this method before, but I would suggest that instead of an impact drill, you consider using a normal drill with a light setting. The reason being is that the impact drill can overtighten the bolt. And when trying to untighten it the next year, it can make it very difficult to dislodge easily given the weather impact to the anchors.
Hi there. I tried what you suggested and it worked fantastic on our balcony stainless handrails. The only problem is after a single rain the rust stains are returning. Is there something that I could apply afterwards to prevent the rust from returning? At this rate I would need to clean them weekly.

this is about the same color i have in small spots on the bottom of my above ground pool. what classification is this algae? i can't seem to get rid of it. killed it once or twice and turned white but came right back I'm about at wits end here :( the cordless vac i have just filters the water right back in a it vacuums too! using algecide/clarifier and chlorine levels are perfect!!! please help!!!
Mustard or yellow algae, get some yellow mustard, algicide and shock the hell out of it with lots of liquid chlorine. Scrub it away, then clean out your filter.
When you rinse off the BarKeepers liquid into the pool water is that okay?

What type of pump do you have that hooked up to? I need a good standalone suggestion to plug in so i can vaccum to waste. My filter doesnt have a waste line.

go really slow like he is if not the vaccum will not pick it up correctly you need to go slow and make sure the vaccumm is on the ground
Make sure you vacuum to waste and add water at the same time cause you loose water while doing it.
He probably used a floculant (it grabs the stuff floating as particulate and sinks it to the bottom) look for pool floc. You have to follow the instructions.

I clean the filter cartridges first, and make sure it’s primed well. The more suction it has the better. Also, He is doing it very slowly so he won’t kick up the algae and get the water cloudy.

THis doesn't help me. I can see it's coming out of the pool but how is your pump set up? Where is the algae water going? Through the filter or out of the pool altogether?
Out of the pool all together. The pump is on waste
@PoolgirlOBX he meant to say the filter(not the pump) which is a sand filter is on the waste dial mode extracting the algae water out of the pool.
Can you link what you use for your pool?
Mine isn't pulling like that. I think maybe my intex pump isn't strong enough
