Some department store bikes are decent but if someone has $200 to spend & they wanted the best bang for their buck, buying a vintage bike & fixing it up is the way to go, you'll get a nice crank similar to this instead of cheap steel & plastic one, etc.

loosen the headset and pedals while the bike is still together way easier

I got one i owned for over 30 years it really needs stripping down and a descent paint job

I bought a 94 Specialized Stumpjumper FS hardtail & it has a RockShox Mag 21 & to my surprise works flawlessly, over 30 years old & handles road chatter like a champ.

I have the 2005 stumpjumper. It is great.
