Just learning about Communities in Schools---and already made my small donation. This is everything I believe in, as my lifetime work is building opportunities for dropout recovery, creating systems for intervention vs suspension, and restoring relationships through the Restorative Practices model. Great panel discussion! In addition to giving Christian a shout out for being a first gen student and great artist, can we give his mom a shout out for giving him an amazing name? I LOVE the name Christian! It is what I named my son, too! Mom's rock, and their sons, too! But, I digress. :)
Great job! Thanks for recording this as I was unable to join the original webinar due to a scheduling conflict.
Hello, my name is Nyibol Bior, and I'm a certified Special Education, PE and ESL teacher working on finishing my first book, "My Beautiful Colors," a beautiful example of how we can turn the most challenging situation into a positive. The book was originally a chapter in my refugee memoir which is next up in line for publishing. I was crying when I wrote My Beautiful Colors because I had been hurt, made fun of for my dark complexion. Thank you so much for this training. I was very excited to share it with my colleagues. I remember when I first moved to the US from NE Africa as a child refugee, I had to be resilient growing up, and now I'm a teacher and seeing a lot of my former self in the kids I work with. As a student, I remember the teacher who was most nice to me make the greatest difference. All others who told me to give up trying caused more trauma (pain) and hopelessness. When I first started teaching, Why Try was the most useful resource for kids who come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. They simply and regularly need to be reminded of what they can become, all the places they can go, and not of how much they lack. I'm happy you guys are still around and I'm grateful for you.
Thank you for this wonderful webinar. As my fellow Kentuckian Dr. Sweeney stated, Students need to see themselves in the curriculum.....
