A short video showing my first attempt at a friction folder in damascus steel. The blade is 3 1/4 long and about 4.4mm thick. The inlays are made of silicon bronze Texture tech from Alpha Knife Supply.

    Dude that's so useful you can actually sharpen it. The ones you buy from Italy there's no sharpening those, whatever they come with that's what you got! Lol not that you're going to use a knife you pay $1,000 for it but man I love that! That would be the Holy Grail of my collection if I had it. lol up to now I've only paid about half that for a knife. So many knives so little time! Lately I've been into buying the Chinese copies that are really sweet, and when you pay under $70 you can really use it. This is the most exciting time ever to be into knife collecting...

    Put some quick release in the hole on the blade and close it while holding the knife press the release button a bunch of times to lubricate it it will help not so hard to press.

    It amazes me that no one seems to be making these ..out of the hundreds of knife makers one sees on videos of Blade Shows where the vid maker walks around and shows all the knives. They're all variations on sportsman hunting knives, folders and tomahawks. Everyone making the same thing nearly. How they stay in business is beyond me. Your Havlin is gorgeous. Maybe some usage and a drop of oil on the firing mechanism might loosen it up a bit.

    Wow. Very nice. As a knifemaker I've made a handful of these and they're certainly not easy. Especially the first few times. But not unachievable and very rewarding when you get them right. And that one's certainly right haha. I'm very curious as to how the guy made the stainless Damascus? Unlike most makers I'm not a fan of crappy simple carbon steels, cept for how easy they are to work with, and have spent alot of effort learning how to process and heat treat modern high performance high alloy martensitic chromium steels and all the knowledge and experience and fancy expensive complicated equipment needed to do so. So mainly limit my Damascus use and production to the few carbon steel blades I'll still make... or ill use (expensive, but cool) damasteel from time to time. So as I say, interesting. I assume maybe uses a softer stainless that's not heat treated for the main part and... possibly a carbon steel for the hard part... idk. Cause most martinsitic stainless you'll ruin by trying to forge it. And Damascus requires a whole lot of forging. Anyway beautiful blade, nice buy. And I too hope your family has and cherishes it for many generations. I'm inspired now to maybe try making another batch of these awesome knives when i get time. Alot of fiddly work ahead haha. :))

      You should get into building these if you're in the knife making biz....everyone else is building the same old stuff, ie: subtle variations of hunting knives and folders ...how they stay in business is beyond me.

      Stick at it bro. It takes alot of practice, especially freehanding it on a stone of some kind. (I'd recommend a quality diamond stone if you do. Alot faster and easier to use IMHO. And they don't warp or anything. Though I love Japanese waterstones too but wouldn't really recommend using them yet. And I mostly only use them for the higher grit polishing now) Or for the easier route you can get one if the sharpening systems where you can mount it and set the angles and such.

    • @tommyw68
      @tommyw68 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no comparison, actually. Frank B knives are pretty much inexpensive Italian production switchblades with stamped bolsters and liners. I have a few. They work, sure, but It would be like comparing a Fiat to a Ferrari. Yes, they are both cars, but they are in totally different categories of quality and workmanship. Frank B, A.G.A. Campolin and other Italian manufacturers are basically production knives. They are good quality, but nothing like the quality of a handmade one of a kind like this or a Burn or Vallotton similar handmade automatic.

    What do you do about blade drift... when the release pin starts to wear? Know what I mean?

    • @tommyw68
      @tommyw68 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. Although not many blade smiths make these anymore, many are qualified to work on it if need be. I can even do some of the work myself. Considering how little use it gets and that fact that I store it open for the most part, I doubt that will be much of an issue in my lifetime.

      @barrybarnes96 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tommyw68 I remember reading some of Panak's back story on how he acquired his Italian stiletto building chops and seem to recall he addressed some of the failings of original Italian stiletto design ...blade drift, release pin wear etc. Can't remember now but probably solved through material choices and actual design changes.
