      you can use a paper towel with water, or I like to use water with a bit of white vinegar in a spray bottle!

    Is sulfur good for cactus when applied to the soil

    • @MyGloriousLeaves
      @MyGloriousLeaves ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven’t personally used it with cacti, but for the purpose of mite and pest prevention I think it would work just fine, just keep in mind sulphur makes the soil’s pH lower (more acidic) so if a specific species can only handle certain pH levels it could affect that, but I think you’d have to add a lot in order to lower it to a point where the plant wouldn’t be able to adapt to it!

    Hi. Do you stick it in damp soil??

    • @MyGloriousLeaves
      @MyGloriousLeaves ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah! Damp soil works, personally I like sphagnum moss because it gives a bit more airflow than soil but it totally works as well, as long as they stay pretty humid while rooting!

  • @taylorhillard4868
    @taylorhillard4868 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you're still having trouble try leaving the stems as larger cuttings. Imo the butterfly method is good for producing a large amount of plants out of few nodes, but requires optimal care for good results. In general you always want to take the largest size cutting you can that will still survive. Going too small cuts the amount of energy that each cutting has inside, making it harder for it to repurpose that energy into new growth. For string of hearts, in my experience, the perfect size cutting is 3 "butterflies" long. I take 2-3 cuttings around that size and plop them on a bolas of moss in one of those little condiment cups with a plastic lid. ( so each cup will have 6-9 butterflies on 2-3 strings) The moss should be moist, not damp, and you don't need to spray them. Cuttings of that size should show baby roots in about one week, and in a month or two will have decent growth for potting up.

    • @chikoskiii7767
      @chikoskiii7767 ปีที่แล้ว

      im new to propagating and houseplants. i took cuttings that had 2 butterflies on them (very small, like 1 mature butterfly and 1 very new butterfly) and i used rooting hormone, then propagated in water. it took a looooong time for roots to grow (3 weeks prob longer). also only 3 of the 5 cuttings grew roots. it is possible but may not be always successful, lesson learned lol. the cuttings tht formed roots i planted them downward in the soil of a more mature string of hearts plant. fingers crossed it grows a root ball. i wish i read your comment before doing this lol i also did this in the winter……..

    • @MyGloriousLeaves
      @MyGloriousLeaves ปีที่แล้ว

      Great observation! I do cut a bit longer sometimes, however with personal experience, one butterfly per "cutting" is optimal for a fuller plant. There is actually the exact same amount of energy in each node no matter which way you slice it (lol). When you have more than one "butterfly" per string, it only activates the bottom node, so the new growth is only coming from one place and only one node is using energy. (over time the other nodes will eventually grow but being cut is what initiates growth in most plants). I have had success doing it your way as well, but if there isn't optimal conditions and the cutting dies (sometimes it's not out fault), and losing all three butterflies is worse than losing just one!

    • @MyGloriousLeaves
      @MyGloriousLeaves ปีที่แล้ว

      There's so many wonderful ways to propagate plants! Perlite and water is also a great choice to get roots started fast. I used your water method years ago when I first started trying to prop string of hearts, and found this moss method way better! Each type of plant you propagate will have certain methods and mediums that help them root better and faster!

    • @taylorhillard4868
      @taylorhillard4868 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MyGloriousLeaves the purpose of the larger cutting is a greater success rate. I've never had a 3 butterfly cutting die. I can't say the same for single butterfly cuttings. Also, all 3 butterflies should root if you do it as I had described. You can still cut the segments that connect them after each butterfly roots, in order to force more growing points for the same overall fullness. But doing them in a string of 3 just makes sure that they don't die before they have the chance to root, which is more of a possibility when doing single butterfly cuttings.

    Thank you. I'm trying this now as no success with water propagation or butterfly method x

  • @mariselav89
    @mariselav89 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I propagated my varigated string of hearts like this on a whim 2 weeks ago. It's MUCH easier than the butterfly method because the hearts are anchored into the soil. The stem also provides nutrients to the leaves while they form roots. So far, I have 10/10 cutting forming roots and 5 cuttings are pushing out new leaves.

    • @MyGloriousLeaves
      @MyGloriousLeaves ปีที่แล้ว

  • @Nekoartx

    So if I just place the cut steam itself I the soil it will have roots?

    • @MyGloriousLeaves
      @MyGloriousLeaves 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically the butterfly method looks like a butterfly with about one inch of stem and one heart on either side. If you push it flat on top of the soil so you can see the butterfly from above, youve done it right and it will eventually produce roots and a root ball and grow out of that “node” where the leaves emerge from on either side! Hope this helps!
