Originally, my motivation to visit the Yerba Buena Island was to see the new park that was open last year with a new apartment complex, but then I decided that this would not be enough, and decided to explore the rest of the island, and found out that there is some history to it which would be useful for me as a lover of travels to know.
The Spanish explorers who discovered an abundance of wild mint on the island dubbed it Yerba Buena (meaning "Good Herb" in Spanish) in 1775. The island was home to Ohlone ancestors, who may have utilized it as a permanent village or as a fishing station. In order to defend northern California and its gold reserves, the U.S. military started constructing fortifications on the island in 1852. For military reasons, the U.S. Army occupied the island in 1866. The island was taken over by the U.S. Navy following the Spanish-American War in 1898. Because so many goats were pastured there during the Gold Rush, the island, once known as Yerba Buena, was renamed Goat Island in 1895. In 1931, the name was once again changed to Yerba Buena. In 1875, the Yerba Buena Lighthouse's construction was finished. The lighthouse is an active navigational aid that is still in use today. I really wanted to see the lighthouse, but it is being guarded, and unfortunately, I was not able to make any photographs. Before 1937, the island was only accessible by boat, but after the Bay Bridge was built, it became accessible also by car. At the same time that it was built, Yerba Buena Island became joint with an artificial island known as Treasure Island (search my channel to find a slideshow about it).
