Keychron C1, Part Three: Customisation
With Epomaker Wisteria Tactile switches, thick PBT XDA profile keycaps from YMDK, a special extra item for the finishing touch, and mighty fists of ham, let's finish transforming the unassuming Keychron C1 into a beautiful gift for our writer friend! Mildly painful but extremely satisfying. And can we somehow turn this into a drawing video as well...?

A Song of Rice and Beans (Insufficient Stories #21)
I appreciated that classic Patrick Alexander comedy at the start with the lists and all the crossed out words - that idea has always stuck with me since reading your contributions to certain magazines in the 2000s. Also, something about keyboards! I used one to write this comment.
Now that you mention it, I do favour a good comedy list.
If your friend isnt used to a QWERTY layout, replacing some letters with novelty keys doesn't seem like a good idea. Especially because one of them was the A key, a key in on a different row on the AZERTY keyboard. But oh well, I'm sure she can change it herself. If you were alluding to changing the layout in software, that should work out as well. However, this is very cool, and a very thoughtful gift. I almost want to score one of those pawprint key caps for myself, except I have a weird ergonomic keyboard with weird key shapes.
The very first thing she did was rearrange the layout to French AZERTY, so no worries there! The Zomoplus kitty paws are a lot to pay for a single keycap, but the quality is good, and they're obviously made to be perfect gift items. Would I buy one for myself? Maybe if I felt like I deserved a present...
@@zpxlngyou're right, I can't buy one for myself. I need to look at some friends with big eyes until they intuit my desires.
Hi. congrrats for vid, but next time more soundtests, -presentation. in 45 min it wasn't covered as required for someone watching a vid about a keyboard.
Always looking for an excuse to massage the tips of my fingers with my beautiful gateron purple rk84! Great tutorial with very well explained reasoning... Boy you made stuff complicated!! 100% would watch again!
Ha, thanks! I think this video isn't a tutorial so much as 'all the stuff you do before filming an actual tutorial'. This is the non-aesthetic, pre-production netherworld of TH-cam keyboard vids.
Even better method for marking the holes - sewing pins. All of the plastic posts have a small hole in the center. You could have stuck sewing pins through a sheet of paper into the holes. The pins will keep the paper in place so there's no distortion due to bending it around the posts. However - I don't think you really needed that level of accuracy. Cutting the felt into 1cm wide strips and arranging them so that they wrapped closely around the posts would probably achieve the same acoustic effect. You could then apply strips in the other direction to get better coverage and to thicken the felt towards the back. It was very entertaining seeing you explore all these options and continually discover better methods, after you'd already committed to the hardest method 🙂
I think that arranging smaller squares or strips of felt did occur to me at some point, but yes, psychologically I was stuck on solving a particular problem, rather than avoiding it altogether. There's a lesson there, probably. I did try pins, as you saw, but in the clumsiest way possible. Making a paper/card template by sticking pins through from the top side is a very tidy idea!
They aren't even real succulents! Most are fake ikea ones. I have a real one but It grew too big to fit under my monitor so it now lives in the kitchen.
That they're fake makes it even more exasperating. Congrats on your healthy plant-baby!
Part 2 was an odyssey... I can only hope that if i were to purchase a keychron the sound of the internal space would not bother me, haha
To be fair, foam apparently works pretty well, and you could even use thin, push-a-hole-right-through-it-able foam in multiple layers, if you found a single layer insufficient. Another thing to try (or watch someone else try) is silicone! th-cam.com/video/JfbALZcWKSM/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/VvRCIOdvJG0/w-d-xo.html Thanks for watching all the way through. Part Three has some painful bits too, but of course is much more satisfying at the end.
I felt great watching this video ;)
Yes, relish my suffering. Let my incompetence boost your own self-worth!
your last video inspired me to replace my keyboard, some things cannot be unseen... lol ended up getting a Keychron Q0 Max (its lovely) and then I got an 8BitDo Retro Keyboard go to along with it which I ended up adding automotive sound dampening material and then 3 layers of masking tape on the PCB. It has all been well worth it. Thanks for the inspiration :)
So long as you're not sending me the bill, you're welcome! Those 8BitDo keyboards seem great - the Famicom/NES ones caught my eye from day one, but I've held off. It's not so much financial prudence as, "I think I'd prefer... another vintage IBM board...?"
FELT!

Thank you, that's very encouraging to hear!
It's a crime that your videos are so unseen. (I've called the police.)
And the worst of it is, I just can't think of a punishment big enough!
A very nice video indeed. As somebody looking at the Keychrons as a possible option for a next keyboard, this has been helpful, as I'm sure the others will. I'm also a writer but I use macOS and Windows roughly equally these days, so was hopeful the swapping would be handy. I don't know if I would be bothered by those extra keys and their funkyness, but I am bothered by the terrible type and icons. Customisation will be considered. Also, at the risk of making you feel old, there's a something a little nice about seeing you pop up every now and again. I was a child raised on Kzones and Total Gamers and keep seeming to stumble onto your stuff every few years. A comfortable returning presence. Anyway, cheers Patrick!
Thank you, that's lovely to hear! As for the funky keys, I think most/many Keychron keyboards are fully reprogrammable anyway, with QMK/VIAL preinstalled. The C1, being a budget board, happened not to be. Regarding customisation, when we get to the end of part 3, this little fella - decent as he is now - will be greatly improved in terms of appearance, feel, and especially sound.
I really enjoy the classic aesthetic at least. But i'm more of a full layout guy. no number pad is a deal breaker for sure.
I usually prefer a fullsize too. In terms of reduced layouts, though, given the redundancy between the nav cluster and the second layer of the numpad, I'm actually really fond of 'navkeyless' (vs. tenkeyless) layouts, uncommon as they are.
Another brilliant short 20 minute one part video.

Patrick, I've been watching your videos for 10+ years (yay Eegra and Sonic days), and thoroughly enjoyed your journey to insanity, and now whatever is left after the floor of insanity falls out from under one. Thank you very much! I hope to do much more - just trying to get some sort of a sensible workflow going. Thanks for sticking around for so long!!
I recently got three of the glass pens. Each one writes differently. I love them. Mine were cheapos. I want to learn more before investing in a nicer one.
Sounds great. I was grateful for the chance to try one out; it feels different than what I imagined.
Having kids copy your drawings must feel so rewarding on many levels
Yeah, it makes me happy that they like my drawings enough to want to copy them, and it's fun to witness how immediately and enthusiastically they leap into the task. And most importantly - what I was poorly trying to explain in the video - maybe it helps to demystify the connection between the comics and illustrations they enjoy, and the contents of their own pencil cases.
Man spills ink all over his fingers relaxing ASMR cottagecore.

I had no idea I would learn about lady god and Japanese geography and also get visual tips on using colour pens and read ANUS in only one video! What value! 👌
These are the best videos on the internet right now and quite frankly, they have made me dislike other things I previously enjoyed. I got right into them!
Good, good. I will establish a monopoly on enjoyment itself, and then drastically lower the quality of my output.
Interesting (and highly entertaining) video! Glad to see you're still around making fun stuff.
Thank you! There are more videos in progress. Unfortunately I've had a troublesome several months, but the next one's coming along little by little...
Man Tobias and Jube is the one comic my best friend and I geek out about to this day. The mystery hat is still one of the all time greatest comics and anything pink chickens was why I continued to buy Mania magazines
Thank you; that's incredibly nice to hear!
I wanted to try to use it with gouache
R the zebra sarasa pens waterproof!?!
It depends whether you mean the regular ones or the MarbleColor ones. Either way, there are some rambling and unscientific answers for you beginning at about 24:35 in the video. Short version is that the regular Sarasa Clip pen ink will get absorbed into the paper pretty well and thus resist water, while with the MarbleColors: not so much. To be fair to the MarbleColors, though: the paper I used for the weeping fish drawing in this video was inkjet paper, which the MarbleColor packaging (I noticed after the fact) mentions specifically as a less-than-ideal paper for these pens. At 16:58 you can see a sketchbook drawing where I inked with MarbleColors then lightly washed some watercolours over the top, and in that case they seemed to do OK! In any case, the best answer is always: test the materials first. (Though equally, I understand that if the accompanying question is, "Should I buy these?", it's not a particularly helpful answer.)
@@zpxlng ah I see , well I have himi gouache and mixed media 200 gsm sketchbook. And bic pens r expensive for me , that's why I asked about these pens
Sadly it's impossible to know exactly how a particular combination of materials will work until you try it. In my experience, the regular Sarasa Clip colours (not the MarbleColors) will resist water but not perfectly: they may smudge a little depending on the type of paper and how much water. If you buy a few and it doesn't work out, at least you've got some nice pens just for writing! But it's up to you how much risk you can afford.
@@zpxlng oh ok! I'll try it out
THREEEE?!
[nods wisely] Three.
Keep up the artwork focused videos, would love to see more live drawing/filling. Do you plan on auctioning off your original drawings at some point?
Thanks, there'll be more drawing for sure. I might make some original artworks in future videos available in my Ko-fi store. I've thought about auctioning them, but I'm not sure what the best method/platform for that would be! Any suggestions?
@@zpxlng Etsy is the best for it, thats normally where most traditional indie art is sold.
I don't think Etsy has an auction feature.
@@zpxlng Oh my apologies, I didnt realize you were set on bidding/auctions. Yeah fixed price, but a lot of artists sell there. Im unaware of any bidding platforms for indie art, sorry man
I'm not set on it, it's just what I was asking about particularly. Sorry if that wasn't clear. As far as a normal, fixed-price shop, I think I'll just keep using Ko-fi...?
the gloves section went on a bit too long. I mean of course the picture represents life and death, if the blue book contains fine vintage loss jpgs.
Yeah, it ends up going in circles a bit, which to be fair is kind of the point, but that doesn't magically make it more entertaining. Oh well, live and learn. There was a whole other tangent right AFTER that, too, which I wisely cut out, at least.
Please never stop doing these ❤
Really glad you're enjoying them! I'll make 'em as often as I can.
This wasn't something I'd consciously realized about your art, or indeed Hokusai and other artworks. Seems like something I should have been aware of already! ::mind creaks open::
No, that's good to hear! Whenever I do anything even slightly clever with what I'm making, I worry it's going to be too obvious. And then I'm at risk of overthinking it, over-clevering it, and ruining it.
Still better than whatever youngster listen to these days
Yeah!!!!!
So relaxing! I’ve just put it on several times in a row so I could probably do with a 10 hour version
Ah, I knew it was a good idea to put a rewind sequence at the beginning!
Great!!
thanks for the part about getting fluids on the inks. slightly uncomfortable, very informative.
I'm thinking I'd like to do some slightly more organised, 'scientific' pen test videos in future, if I'm able to devote enough time to the channel.
Very relaxing, thank you. but surely you don't listen to your own music while you're drawing?
What type of music do you listen to when you're drawing?
Lately, same as most people I think, a lot of low-tempo, groovy, instrumental electronic stuff. Good for just keeping my mind company, and clear and even at a low volume: nothing to punch through the walls or demand too much attention from my ears. It's like listening to white noise or rain sounds, really, but less distractingly boring for my delicate little mind. I'm still pretty picky about it, though! Intense '90s techno is good for when I want more energy, and old soul music is a nice change from everything being electronic. I do find the right music necessary to focus at all, usually, so I'm worried about doing drawing streams on here, because of copyright strikes. I suppose I could work with headphones on but I hugely prefer not to.
I love your drawing videos. This is another great one, with let's call it, an extremely thorough look at the waterfast-ness of those Zebra pens. But this stuff is important huh? I tried some Marvy Le Plume pens for the first time this week and they pick up and smudge the ink from Kuretake Bimoji pens, I think because I've accidentally bought water-based ones not the permanent alcohol-based Le Plumes. The permanent ones seem to be hard to find. Looking forward to more coaster vids!
Thank you! Did you get those thin ones, I think they're called 'Marvy Le Plume II'? I've only seen them online. Yeah it's weird that they gave them a similar name when they seem to be a completely different pen, not a mere variation. I guess brand recognition is important, but so is not confusing and annoying your customers, surely!
@@zpxlng The sequel is never as good. Hehe, yes that's what I bought. I'll rectify that, thanks.
Welcome back to hell!! haha, love this!
Thanks man! I miss you!
You are forgiven for pen slander
Thank you; it's more than I deserve.
