There is nothing like knitting with handspun yarn. The hat and headband set with go to live with the famers that raised the wool. I will keep on spinning to finish the brown and blue toned hat.

    Spinning breaks are the best! I work from home a lot, which means unworried lunchtime spinning or knitting. And even on office days, either my supported spindle or my EEW Nano2 come along with me and I set a timer to make sure I don’t go over the hour I have for lunch. Especially during Tour De Fleece, it got me to get in daily spinning time. My colleagues found it fascinating. Of course you get the usual questions and exclamations: “Why don’t you just buy yarn?” - “I’d never have the patience to spin enough for a sweater/shawl/scarf!” etc. My perpetual reply: “It’s not about how long it takes for me, but about how it relaxes me and allows me to focus back on my paying job during work hours.” Added benefit being people don’t infringe on my lunch break to ask me that “quick” little work question that actually eats up more than half an hour to answer properly off the clock. LOL. Your yarn is absolutely gorgeous! I thoroughly enjoyed your video!

      Thank you so much for sharing, you make my heart ♥️ happy. Keep finding your spin time where you can, and keep the pesky work questions at bay during your personal time. By the way the yarn I made knitted up into a really nice hat.

      @ - I just realised how very ‘European’ my comment about fending off work-related questions during my lunch hour is! For anyone reading this who might not entirely understand (you do, that’s obvious from your response): Labour laws where I live are quite clear: personal time is personal time. That being said, humans are humans. Lunchtime spinning is my own personal diplomatic solution to address something colleagues might not be conscious about is a breach in a non-confrontational manner. I need that lunch break to recharge and reset. And I get to do something I love that yields me yarn to do something else I love. Triple win! 😊

    Curious, but do they make extensions for the 3 spindles so that they can sit up higher and have less change of catching on the pegs or can the pegs be removed to avoid potential snags? if not, bet those are some things to make the spinning wheel even better. :)

    • @mattimakes
      @mattimakes 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for this comment - since I bought the wheel second hand I really hadn’t looked through Spinolution’s website. I have now combed through the web site and no such extension was found :( - the Pegs need to be there to keep the newly played yarn organized on the 🧵. I did thing of drilling holes in the leg supports for the metal rods and creat a lazy Kate that way. Or just make a separate lazy Kate to accompany my Bullfrog.

      My apologies for the delay in my reply. I wanted to check my dyes before answering. I dyed the fiber awhile back and couldn’t recall the name of the colour. @CrumbleMcRumble 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It’s so beautiful! I’m thinking of spinning up mohair and targhee for socks, would you do 75/25 (75 being the targhee) blend? Also, could I dye my yarn when it’s finished as opposed to the raw fiber? Also, I don’t have a drum carder…can rolags made from hand carders work just as well? I’m new to spinning and to dyeing (fiber). Sorry for so many questions but tyia if you are able to answer any!

    • @mattimakes
      @mattimakes 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I do a 30% for the mohair but 25% should be enough to add strength and stability for socks. Yes, you can always die the yarn after spinning. ChemKnits has some great how to dye yarn tutorials. As long as the fibers are blended together the method shouldn’t matter. Rolags spin up well and are easier to handle than a batt so being new to spinning they are a great way to make a measurable progress, just remember to make up enough to complete your project. I am happy you’re getting into spinning and so happy that you let me be part of your journey. Happy Spinning.

    Suffolk? Yes, that method should work well. However, for finer fleeces, Merino and derivatives, I would expect at least partial felting with this method. Those are better off in smaller batches in laundry bags in rectangular plastic wash basins, where you can use a spatula to get underneath the bag to lift out the wool without agitating it. When I wash fleeces, I separate getting out the sand and soil from getting out the lanolin. I first soak the wool in lukewarm water, depending on how dirty it is, two or three times. Then it goes into very hot water (I mix boiling water in with the hottest tap water, it should be at least 160°F) with some blue Dawn. You will see that water instantly get cloudy with the lanolin coming out. One wash with the soap has always been enough for me, and I don't let it sit long. After rinsing in equally hot water, I put the bag flat between towels and gently press on it. Then it goes onto a nylon pop-up sweater dryer, still in the bag, for a few hours. Then I take the wool out of the bag to let it dry fully.

    I love spinning on a dealgan. I use it as a drop spindle too.

      It is such an easy spindle to use. Took it out in the wild Sunday, got some interesting looks. Walked through Target and Fred Meyer and spun while my son shopped for legos.

    Thanks for the video. Most people who claim to be "allergic" to wool aren't allergic at all. You are right that it has to do with the harsh commercial processing but it has to do with the irritating broken ends of the wool due to chemicals. People aren't "allergic" but their skin is being irritated by those broken brittle ends.

      Thank you for sharing! Yes, the broken ends would cause a lot of irritation. It could appear as a contact dermatitis. I appreciate you!!

      The hair scarf that I was wearing at the beginning of the video is a pattern by Cinnamon Stitches. th-cam.com/video/jhF510eChOs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vxBd0I_2U1lr8J9f I like this one because there are no ties!

    Could you put it in a mesh bag and tumble dry or would that make it felt?

    • @mattimakes
      @mattimakes 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do not put in your dryer it will felt. Air dry is best. I try to put it out in the sun on warm days, but I have put on clothing dry racks inside as well.

    I believe they used lye soap back in the day to clean their wool.

    • @mattimakes
      @mattimakes 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, a mixture of animal fats and lye water. That was the basic soap for all things. I make a lard soap made a modern version of that, but have yet to see if it will clean wool.

    I find, when I do a three-ply, that they never end all at the same time! So by the end of the three-ply I have plied normally, then I bracelet-ply the thickest bobbin to get back to three, and if THAT runs out before the end of the last bobbin I use the loop to start a chain ply, which gets me a three-ply all through the yarn :) I haven’t spun for socks yet, or with mohair, but I’ll rewatch this video when I’m going to!

    I just got a Bullfrog and love it! I'm just wondering why you didn't use the built in lazy kate? This yarn is going to make beautiful socks!

    • @mattimakes
      @mattimakes 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Reasons for not using the Bullfrog’s lazy Kate: I only have one of the metal dowels. I have yet to make the other two. I also don’t like pulling the singles up and over to ply them. I currently have a frozen left shoulder and it won’t do that motion. I have the sock done from toe to half way through the foot, they are looking pretty good 👍 🧦
